(かのじょは、きれいだ) We can't say かのじょは、きれいな。Therefore, we use (da) here for clarity. She is pretty. (かのじょは きれいだ)She is not pretty. (かのじょはきれいじゃない)She was pretty. (かのじょは きれいだった)She was not pretty. (かのじょはきれいじゃなかった)It is like this.

I'm confused. For the な-adjectives, why is there だ in parentheses instead of な, in the lesson box on the right? Shouldn't it be な?
