I’d understand high school or even college/semi-pro level but these Sunday leagues or amateur teams are just for recreation, no need to risk a major injury just because you wanted to win the ball
What a lot of these clips show to me, is that the difference between a top-line ref and an everyday amateur ref is the ability to recognise out-of-the-ordinary events when they happen, and having the cojones to react appropriately. So many of these tackles don't get the red cards they should, because the ref is just completely caught unawares by them.
You get what you pay for, really. These hack and slash players/leagues don't much about many of the challenges we see, so the better referees leave. The abuse that is allowed to go on is ridiculous, so better referees leave. The pay and time invested aren't worth the BS.
@@grumpyref agreed - and football has a serious ref treatment problem that other codes don’t have to the same degree. Surrounding the ref is a total no-no everywhere else

When I was 20 I had my leg broken in a severe, yet legal, tackle, because the 'keeper and the defender went for the ball at the same time. It just so happened that my leg was in the middle. I still scored, but on reflection, the year I spent in hospital and the multiple operations somewhat dampened that achievement. It's a contact sport, after all, so you have to expect an injury or two.
Hopefully u healed well bro, when I was 19 I was playing for my local club, and being from England I was playing in 2 divisions lower then the national league which is like the last league of pro football before it goes to semi pro and shit the lower you go, so I was part time on a weekend and didn’t get paid and I got my studs stuck in the ground while trying to spin away from a defender and the RB came flying in my slide tackled me and he completely snapped my ankle I wasn’t able to walk for 6 months he really did some damage and now 15 years on From that it still hurts me know and then when I move my ankle around, honestly as a younger player it’s dangerous playing in these types of matches glad you still scored tho 😂😂
@@KohlerK93 yeah, some of these are calls that most of us are going to get right the vast majority of the time. I have no illusions that I'm a great referee but the games where rubbish tackles start a cycle of escalation can be a rare occurrence or a common occurrence depending on how well you spot the little things early on.
About 2 months ago, during a tournament, my team and I were waiting for the current game to finish. One of the teams had scored a last second penalty then one of the biggest brawls I've ever seen broke out. People were throwing hands and even karate kicking each other.
The tackle in the 2nd clip by the player in orange was an absolutely phenomenal tackle, kept his studs down, 50/50 and was stronger in the tackle. You are taught young to commit to the tackle or risk injury. Great tackle.
That's why refereeing is so hard. A group of people can watch this, freeze it at 0:44, play it back and forth a couple of times and half of them say "great tackle, all ball" and half of them say "studs into ankle - red" 🙂 It's a clear foul, though 🙂*Best* case is he got a some of the ball, but also the player and acted careless towards his opponent, free kick, no caution... Worst case is that he entered the tackle with excessive force, hit above the ankle, endangered the safety of the other player and gets a straight red. It's a bit subjective & personally I can't exactly tell from the grainy video, but the referee had a great position and angle. Not sure why he didn't call at least a foul.
I think the referee pulled the correct colour card out of their pocket for maybe 2 of these challenges. I know how hard it is when you're watching for 90 minutes and have no replays but it would be nice to see a better success rate. plenty of free kicks and yellow cards for red card offenses here.
4:23 Dude is on the bench with a headband and a blood-soaked uniform, and somehow this 3:59 is not even a foul or card. I'm glad I wasn't playing in that game.

It's really interesting seeing the quality of refereeing in these leagues. Some of the refs decision making are very bad. Majority of the refs aren't speaking to players after bad challenges, especially the dangerous ones, and therefore the tackles continue to escalate. The clip at 1:10 for example. Ref is in a great view, sees what happened, you can see his reaction in his body language as he observes and yet he isn't confident enough to intervene and set a standard for the game, throws a yellow card to everyone involved and calls it a day. If you did that in a Saturday / Sunday game in the UK, you would be off the pitch instantly. Edit : Watch number 8 for the team in white hit the player in his lower face / chest. Straight red.
