What is really remarkable is the fact that although Ali graduated with a D average and failed the military tests twice, he became self educated and went on college lecture tours during his exile because he was broke and was well received, in fact, no speaker in Harvard University history at that time ever received a standing ovation, except, Muhammad Ali. He also was interviewed by some of the best interviewers and news anchors of the time and more than held his own, incredible man, and I'm proud to say I met him.

@Dennis Ali was no coward. He didn't flee the country or seek deferment. Men like Gingrich and Rush Limbaugh, Dick Cheney, Donald Trump etc. all agreed with the war yet found ways to avoid the draft. Ali was principled and lost his livelihood and title and missed the prime years of his career. Also why should any black man in the 50s and 60s want to go fight in Vietnam or anywhere when they were second class citizens in America. Furthermore, ever war post World War II has been in violation of international law and also for geopolitical reasons. Has absolutely nothing to do with "protecting America".

Me too! Remember, Ali himself was broke in the late 60s, had to borrow money from Frazier, and his career was in limbo, and a large portion of America hated him. It is entirely possible that at the height of hatred, he would have been assassinated. But he had faith that a higher power still wanted him on Earth unlike Malcolm X! So hopefully you could sleep peacefully at night, and work on your problems with a fresh mind each and every day until you come up with the solution!

He was one of the most handsome men I ever saw. And when he was truly in shape, a great physical specimen. Not overly muscular like Ken Norton or hugely powerful looking like Liston or Foreman, but just a perfect athletic body. His fight against Cleveland Williams showed Ali at his brilliant best. A mind boggling display. What we might have witnessed had he not been robbed of 3 years of his prime.

@Fit Boy Abdul I saw all of Ali's fights since his return from exile. I was 12 when he lost to his greatest rival, Joe Frazier, in March of 1971. That was the greatest one day sporting event of the 20th century. I only bet on two fights in Ali's career. In this case I bet my stepather $1.00 that Joe would win even though I was fervently hoping that Ali would win.
The second time was when Ali fought George Foreman in Kinshasa, Zaire, Africa in late October of 1974. I bet $5.00 that Ali would win.

Muhammad Ali, may Allah swt be pleased with him, was truly a man of principle. There are many great athletes of all color, but, Muhammad Ali eclipsed them all. He was more than just a boxer. As mstrunn said, Ali was interviewed by the top news anchors of the day and he more than held his own. How many athletes have been on Face the Nation. Many of the interviewers were stunned by Ali's knowledge and how articulate he was. he may not have had a great formal education, but he was educated and for all the brashness we see in promotion of his fights, he was very humble, charitable, loyal and principled man. Words are not enough to describe Muhammad Ali.

#TEAM TRUMP Marciano was easy to hit and was down in his career more than Muhammad.
Ali "before" his prime (his prime was robbed from him, so he wasn't allowed to fight then) would have carved Marciano up. Conversely, Ali was too fast for Marciano to hit. I'm talking about the young Ali not the Ali who came back after the three and a half years forced exile. Marciano was powerful but slow. Ali would have chopped him up. Ali was hard to hit with two good eyes. Imagine trying to hit him with closed ones. Marciano would have been another Ali TKO victim.

Frazier would have been a thorn in Ali’s side regardless of whether they would have rumbled in the 60’s. Joe was tough and determined. However, Ali would have never lost to him. Ali lost to him in 71 because it was obvious Ali hadn’t shaken off all of the ring rust. Joe was smart to take the fight when he did, and although he knocked Ali down and won fair and square, he still spent a month in the hospital afterwards.

Ali was the greatest sportsman of the 20th century. Ruth, Louis, Mays, Chamberlain, Russell, Abdul-Jabbar, Jordan, Howe, Orr, Gretzky, Nicklaus, Palmer, Unitas, Brown and others all form a line behind him. Even Pele comes in behind Ali.
My vote for athlete of the 21st century goes to Roger Federer.

This is a perfect example of why Ali was the greatest. Not just because of his legendary skill as a pugilist, or his ability to come back from defeat. It's about an unshakable will and love for his people, in a time where people would really try to destroy you for going against the system. One of short list of truly amazing human beings. RIP champ. xx

You cannot put a price tag on what Muhammad Ali was worth a day. The outrageous money that Floyd Mayweather gets. I never watch his fights Mayweather always what's up getting a unanimous decision. He has not knocked out anybody since 2011 and that was Victor Ortiz. The referee was separating the two fighters and Floyd Mayweather hit him on the break it should have been illegal. Muhammad Ali pave the way 4 people in the boxing ring to get the outrageous amount of money that they do today. If Muhammad Ali was boxing today you cannot put a price tag on his worth. He would die in the ring before he would give up a fight a lot of Fighters nail just give up.
