when I make ocs, I usually design them first and then create a backstory around the design

Let me just step in and clarify something for you all: antagonist =/= villain.
An antagonist is someone to oppose the protagonist or main character in a story. A villain is, to put it simply, a bad guy. Sometimes the antagonist is a villain but not always.

Spidey-Spoo mine isn't an Alicorn it's a Changeling that turns herself into an Alicorn so she can experience what she never had in the Changeling kingdom and also because she was sick of being a Pegasus and dropping everything cause of her clumsiness so she just went with that form

This video should be named, "why I hate Mary Sue characters" rather than why I hate alicorns. I have seen well thought out alicorn ocs, who don't have a drawing attached, and I have seen unicorns that are super op, and were based entirely on the design. Saying that, I agree with your argument, it just spreads to more than just alicorns. (Btw my oc is an earth pony so I'm not defending my own)
I have an alicorn oc and she is not even close to perfect. Her biggest flaw is self acceptance and she has been trapped in situations where she has to think about and accept who she is. She can in fact be defeated, yes, she is powerful, but come on. Not op powerful.
someone I chat with sometimes, has an Oc who is a non magical pony, as in they aren't even an earth pony. they have 0 powers, but then... you find out. they invented Wings, a death ray, the tardris, rocket boots, he is immune to magic, and punches and kicks, yet he has weak bones. He is a Royal Inventer, A royal guard, a scientist, and a teacher. And that's before he downgraded the Garysue-ness! He just ignores any and all constructive criticism I give him. (-_-" )

I still don't like the idea of alicorn OCs but back in the 6th grade I despised them. I use to have a friend where her OC was an alicorn so I said "how did she become an alicorn?" She said that Celestia used her magic to give her infinite wings. Needless to say we were arguing with the logic.

Wow, even my sixth grade alicorn OC has a better explanation:
Nationwide conflicts occurred in Equestria against villains while she was just a filly, and she worked under the radar to cause a series of events that would topple the enemy. Her plans go perfectly, but she utterly fails in the end, but the events opened up multiple opportunities for Equestria’s forces and she was rescued in the nick of time to see that her actions saved at least 100 civilians in both Ponyville and Canterlot. She and her friends who had helped her were respected for their contributions and were allowed to participate in major acts against the enemy
She didn’t become an alicorn after that, but as she grew up she rose through the ranks of authority, and became an alicorn princess after leading an extreme victory against an opposing army, while exhibiting pretty honorable acts. It’s not that much on its own but she’d taken part in countless important events so that victory was the act to make the princess thing happen. She gladly accepted, since she dreamed of being a princess since she was a filly

In a way I can relate to this, But if it is like a kid creating a My Little Pony oc, then I would just let them be kids. As a child you just want to make your own character, it's nothing serious to them, but usually they get called on for having a 'bad' oc. I'm not saying that you do call on people with 'bad' alicorn oc's but I just wanted people to know that their is a difference between having a cringey mary sue oc and an oc that a child has made just to express their imagination. No hate! Good reasons, but I just wanted to address it.
Pot Noodlez I'm a kid and I came up with my own alicorn oc that was born as an alicorn, is really edgy, is kinda invincible but if her horn gets wet she can't use her magic. And I didn't just 'recolor' her, I actually drew her and took my precious time to come up with a back story for her. She is very shy and doesn't show a lot emotion, she cuts herself when she gets really stressed. (She can heal herself tho) She also has the ability to bring people back to life. But as a Christian, I don't even understand how that would work. :/ (BTW I ship her with sans; very important information) And recently I came up with a name for her, (not sure if it's a good one for her but I tried.) April.... Her name is April.

Pot Noodlez When I was 14, I came up with an OC named Harmony. As bad is it is, she’s based on me, but I came up with a different backstory for her. She was a unicorn who later became an Alicorn because she had a friend who was a Pegasus and they fused their abilities. There was also a thing where the affects of poison joke gave her wings due to Harmony already having the magic to become an Alicorn. I based Harmony off of myself so she is really shy and constantly stressed, but she is a huge nerd. She lives with a few other ponies in Ponytown (no canon characters, just OCs) and although I haven’t done her full backstory, I’ve done some small bits and pieces (such as how she met her friends and the Pegasus friend she became an Alicorn because of, the way she got her cutie mark, etc)

I made an alicorn OC... Just as an experiment really. It was supposed to be an earth pony that lived by the sea and basically helped organise the sea ponies (I designed my own versions of them... ponies that are literally made of water) and in doing so became an alicorn that ruled the oceans of equestria. I dunno, I planned a comic but I never finished it.
I am aware, I just don't like those design so I tried something else.

Hi everyone. This video is over 8years old now, and I did not expect this of all videos to be my most popular video. I do want to point out that a lot can change in 8 years and the audience this video was aimed for were adults who were fans of MLP and how so many fans made alicorn OCs without putting any thought into them. And I just want to describe how she looks, she has a dark purple curly/messy mane and tail. She has a light purple coat/skin. She has dark purple eyes and minion goggles. She also has a banana for a cutie mark.

Karen Chow My alicorn OC isn't a Mary Sue, she isn't perfect at all. And there's a pretty good back story. All things unlike the normal alicorn OC. I mean, the design even isn't fancy, it looks normal, no dresses, no fancy curls, no fancy shoes, she's just normal. With a normal horn and normal alicorn wings. I don't know where I was going with this.

Looking back on these types of videos, I realize that these ocs belong to mostly children who wanted to have a lot of fun with their characters.
Remember, as long as you don’t harass anyone or hurt anyone else for their art or ocs keep doing what you’re doing. Cringe is dead. Life’s too short to care if your video game/ tv show oc is bad. :)

No...not how that ends....First stabbed, burned, slapped, frozen, then defrosted to be burned again, whipped, questioned on how can she be that stupid, break her wings, and THEN throw her off a cliff. Gosh, I wouldn't say that if her voice wasn't so annoying, she wasn't so mean to her, and she had a story that may or may not have been developed with the help of several people....like if you introduce your OC through an rp, techincally, if not overpowered, you could use that as an origin story.

You totally should have used a Pony Generator model for Mary Sue. That would have definitely hammered the point home. I think the fact that the alicorn OC was drawn by you might give it more legitimacy than it necessarily has. Plus it would have been hilarious!

Alicorn OC's are just, kinda stupid, because Alicorns have a very special role, and most people make their OC and Alicorn because it looks good and powerful, and more better than any other.
I only made two alicorn OCs because back in the days I thought alicorns could be born normally, and I was a Luna x Sombra fan so I made my OCs their daughters... But not because they are powerful. I just like the way alicorns look. And I love both flying and magic 0_0
But those OCs were quite bad lol. It's just Celestia and Luna all over again. But this time "Luna" doesn't get banished. I think I'll create a new OC xD

Cringe culture is dead so I made an earth pony princess named Heartshot. She *does* happen to be a princess but not by traditional means. She was adopted by the 2 kings of a far-off land who saw her potential as a filly. Yes, I said 2 kings, because we need more gays in MLP. Anyways, she has anxiety and her Cutie Mark is a heart with a teal arrow shot through it. She doesn't get much screen time, as the kingdom only shows up in a few episodes, but I thought it would be a fun concept.

It’s just that alicorns are too basic and OCs are usually like “PRINCESS” or “BETTER THAN YOU AND CANT BE BEATEN” like hey said a Mary Sue.
Maybe you have a back story but just because you have one doesn’t mean it won’t be ruined by all of the “too powerful for you” typical alicorn :/

It’s okay if your alicorn is not over-powered, or is seen better than everybody else. It’s just overused with the same boring personality, snobby, way too nice for someone to be human/a pony, or just some sort of princess.

Fun fact: my character was a mistake, I just made a pigeon that used to come to my balcony as a human and I just LOVED the way she looked...
mmm, does this mean one of my ocs are bad? because I didn't make up the ocs name quite yet, but I got the backstory and look down, she looks like an alicorn, but there's many unique features, like her wings are butterfly's wings. and a broken horn, plus her backstory might be pretty interesting. idk maybe not. here it is: she was actually born an earth pony, but she studied spells she can do without a horn, and she did a spell where she can get a horn, she did it and it succeeded, she didn't know that her horn was more fragile then a normal horn since it was created with a spell, basically adding a body part, not fully possible without something bad in return, then, she did the same spell twilight sparkles did to rarity, but the spell was to powerful for her, so her horn broke, and her butterfly wings became perminate, and the only way to turn her back to her previous state is for someone else to use a spell to turn her back into an earth pony, the problem is, she doesn't trust anyone, because shes worried they would make her even worse then she already is. I'm mostly worried that her design might make people say she's an alicorn.

Your oc is a perfect example of having a character that looks different for a reason, if people call your character a mary-sue they are probably over reacting or didn't listen to her backstory, I think your character sounds interesting and she has a few flaws even pointed out by her backstory, of course there are things that could change and a character is never perfect, but I think she sounds dimensional and like an actual person, not a perfect godlike being.
Try the spell was to powerful for her horn. Instead of for her. That makes it a little more less to confuse. I kindo got confused because if she can make a fake horn with a broke horn then she's more powerful than Twilight. So I thought that you were saying she was weak but before she was powerful? But I get it now. Just some advice.
I like the idea of a horn made by magic being fragile and the idea of a idea of a Earth pony having magic. As a pullback to a Earth pony with magic you could put that her magic is weaker and that could be a struggle for her character. But the butterfly wings could be scraped : )
When I was a kid I drew myself as an alicorn not because I wanted to be a self-insert all-powerful princess but solely because I thought having both a horn and wings was the coolest thing ever. Now I just draw mlp fanart; no OCs/self-inserts lol

That's a little bit of a Mary sue as the only flaw of the character is that she does not have a horn.
Maybe make her a little less I NEED I HORN TO BE SPECIAL!!! or if you really want the she needs a horn bit to fit, maybe set it in Alicornia (the land off of Equestria where all alicorn live) (not canon) because in my story in Alicornia all ponies start out as unicorns and turn into alicorns when they get a tital. Depends. If the Imperfections make your whole character, then she is a MAry Sue. If they shape but do not define her and lead to her development, then she is not. Helpful tip: Mary Sue's tend to be stagnant. If your character has a *ahem* well-developed development arc, then they are probably not a MAry SUe

To be honest I think you can make the aesthetic first and then have that inspire the backstory. That might not be the way professionals in the design industry go, but it’s another technique, and a lot of people making OCs do it just for fun anyway. In which case the backstory doesn’t have to matter.
yea, i make random designs and legit just instantly tie it all to a specific backstory on the spot- either its simple or complex, depends on the feel of the character

Sakura Kittylite 41 my first oc was a unicorn, the reason why is because I do not like heights (pegasus) or getting my hands dirty (earth pony). I just found being a unicorn was the best one, especially for holding things.

I started by drawing a pony then searched a lot of OCs for hair style ideas and then colored and stuff then gave her a name. Then I have changed her design as I went on, slightly changing her colors and eventually changing part of her name

I started with a snow queen similar to elsa, and ended up with a pony colored like dawn who helps bullied ponies.

I have a unicorn oc who survived a war but lost her magic to live. She the made mechanical wings when everyone made fun of her. Her wings soon stoped working and she was unable to rebuild them. One day her magic sparked back and she fixed her wings. Then her horn fell off.

My oc name is Moonstar Sky, she is in fact a alicorn, but I made her as Luna's reincarnation. Her back story is that she was actually a Pegasus, and she became an alicorn when she flew so high, she was in space, she loved it, but she couldn't breath, so she got a sphere-like object, placed it on her head and went back to space. While she was flying around she saw a bright sphere, and wanted to share it with the world, so she gathered all her strength and flew as hard as she could, lifting it. As she did so, the moon rose, and the space and appeared over the pony's. Moonstar loved how everyone looked so peaceful while sleeping, and decided, she will bring this beautiful "night" evey night, and therefore got her cutie mark and stayed with her sister in their home raising the moon and the sun as alicorns. Her sister is also an Alicorn, but thats a diffrent story. Anyway, She is 27 has a dark purple and blue mane, and does not think highly of herself as allpowerful and what not. She is a protagonist. And like I said, when she was younger,about sixteen, she was a Pegasus.

My oc is nothing speacil but she can turn into this huge fire pony thing I don't know how you picture it in your head but it's kinda like how Naruto and the nine tail beast thing (I don't know much about Naruto) but she actually turns into it... no hate to anyone who agrees with the general argument of the joke being made in the video but most people who are or were in this fandom are/ joined as kids and make/stick to alicorn OCs because it's hard to choose a favorite type of pony and there's a ton of creative freedom and interesting possible backstories that can be made with them. I've seen some alicorns that were dogsh* in power levels and come from alicorn civilizations far from equestria or before the current time thousands of moons ago and would HC that's where celestia and luna are from. It's just not cool to come into a kid's community and start bashing kids for being kids.
When I was 9 I didn't understand that the reason why there were only two alicorns. I thought it was because they were going extinct, so I "solved" the problem by making about 300 alicorn OCs. I took up a good 7ish pages with incredible tiny writing about each one individualy. I think my favorite s were tictok who had the ability to travel across time, and little leaf who liked plants... Ya that's pretty much all I can say about him.

The only reason she decided to have Crystal was to pass on her duty as godess. Mystic wave was getting weaker and weaker, so she could not keep her duty much longer. When Crystal was finally old enough, Mystic Wave gave her powers to Crystal. Crystal was transformed into an alicorn, and her mother became a regular unicorn. (That is what I have a far. It still needs some work)

My OC is named Dawn Shine. She was originally a unicorn, with a golden-orange coat, a yellow and orange mane, blue eyes, and a cutie mark that is a book surrounded by many multicolored orbs. Although she is usually kind, she can be a bit sarcastic, and if angered, will go on a rampage. This is one of her biggest downfalls, as she is too strong, and will cause enormous amounts of damage, and is angered quite easily. She will also "overload" as she calls it, if under a lot of pressure, and not be able to preform magic. She is very skilled at magic, and can occasionally create a full invincibility spell, however, it is very difficult for her to do. She became an alicorn after rescuing the Elements of Harmony thanks to her elemental magic. However, she helped Celestia and Luna enough that she was deserving of another promotion. But she was already an alicorn! No, she didn't get shapeshifting. No, she was not made a god. She just requested having her alicorn wings replaced with dragon wings. Dawn is the pony that adds color to the sunrise and sunset. She is also not technically an alicorn anymore, due to having her alicorn wings replaced. She refers to herself as a Dracorn.

I’m perfectly fine with creating Ocs with strong Abilities, but please give them weaknesses. I’m fine with Alicorn Ocs, but give them explanations as to how they became one.
Twilight is a decent example, being strong, but with flaws. She practiced Magic ever since she was young and became as strong as we know her as. She helped create a new type of Magic through her deep understanding of friendship, thus earning her status.
