  • Fr. Mike explains why hope is the best remedy for suicidal thoughts. If you know someone struggling with such thoughts, don’t hesitate to reach out to them with reasons to have hope. If someone you know or love has committed suicide, pray for them and don’t lose hope for their soul. If you struggle with suicidal thoughts, don’t be ashamed to seek help. Fr. Mike shares these words of encouragement and more in this video.

We can't know, how God will Judge anyone. Many Meds cause Suicidal Tendencies. Lots of people have Chemical Imbalances, to Toxins now used, in everything from food, to it's packaging, to airborne, lawn care products... We are mere Mortals. I lost my husband 11 years ago. I once heard him say, “I don’t deserve God’s love.” I truly believe that God has mercy and has wrapped his loving arms around him. After my husband died, he came to me in a dream. He was crystal clear to me. I hugged him and then I got angry at him for ending his life. He hugged me tightly and said, “my brain was so sick.” God would never punish him for being sick. God figures it out beyond what we can comprehend.

I'm against suicide. I was depressed also to suicidal. I almost did suicide as a 5-Point Calvinist. And these scriptures got me more hope.
I'm Arminian now from these scriptures I posted on here.
      New American Standard Bible (NASB)
Mark 9:33 (V)They came to Capernaum; and when He was in (W)the house, He began to question them, "What were you discussing on the way?"
      .
Mark 9:34 But they kept silent, for on the way (X)they had discussed with one another which of them was the greatest.
      .
Mark 9:35 Sitting down, He called the twelve and said to them, "(Y)If anyone wants to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all."
      .
Christian world domination. Why to raise kids Christians. God Son Jesus said similarly to whoever is useful the most is the best merited of the apostles. Useful merit for eternal rewards and competition with other Christians. With God Son Lord Jesus Christ faith teaching, people will want to be useful for the kingdom of Heaven, which usefulness happens on Earth and if any other place. We need to help this world as much as we can!
This text could motivate, supposed to be Christian people, to do all types of usefulness. Chores, volunteering, grade school, high school, college, and work. Good people; this world needs them.

You are spot on about 13 reasons why! My mother was a devout Catholic who lost her battle to mental illness when I was a child. I was so angry for so long. I came to terms with the fact that she was sick and it was not her free will and it helped me process it and recover. I recently have been watching videos by priests on the matter and it has given me great peace! I said the divine mercy chaplet for her recently. @@silentumexcubitor6747 It is this type of thinking that keeps mental illness in the closet. Unless you walk a mile in my shoes, my brother, it is best to refrain from making blanket, Scientology-type ignorant statements. You can do more harm than good. Father Mike. A very good topic that you tackle. I had 2 people (unrelated to each other) commit suicide within a week of each other this past June...I was numbed by it and their families left shattered. One did jump off the Golden Gate Bridge and both suffered from deep depression for years and both had the loving support of their families and therapists, but Father, we can only feebly imagine the type of true darkness they must live with 24 hours a day, 365 days a year forward and onward. I know that the struggle with the "demons" that plagued them had to be a battle that I could never imagine. And let me tell you, to be desperate and hopeless enough to jump off that bridge is earth shattering if you have ever been on it and looked into the steel blue cold water of the bay... so with that said, this humble Catholic believes that God's mercy and love knows no boundaries as He is boundless in mercy and forgiveness. For those who have lost dear friends, family members and coworkers to suicide my heart and prayers go out to each and everyone. Keep these souls in your daily prayers.
Father Mike keep up all the good work. You are a RUclips blessing.

My Aunt committed suicide in November of 2015. While I was 8 months pregnant, I had to identify her body on scene for the coroner. It was among the most difficult experiences I have had. It wasn't particularly the worst thing I have ever seen, as I am a Paramedic, however, with her being my Aunt it was more difficult than all the other traumas I have experienced being in my line of work. I just felt sad that she felt as though she had no way out other than to commit suicide. She struggled with Mental Illness (depression, anxiety, Bipolar type I, along with a lot of trauma in her life), I truly feel she was very ill at the time of her suicide and felt tortured all of her life and that she is now finally at peace. However, my Mom (her sister) is not having as easy of a time coming to terms with what had happened. So, anyone thinking of suicide, please seek help. Your problems really are temporary and the permanent decision to take your life, effects a lot more than you realize.

So-called "mental illnesses" are exactly as "real" as presents from Santa Claus, but NOT more real. They were INVENTED to serve as excuses to sell drugs. The "lot of trauma in her life" would explain ALL the so-called "symptoms" of so-called "mental illness". You want to believe that your Aunt had "mental illness", to make it easier for you to understand. You want to "blame the illness" in the same way that quack psychiatrists "blame the brain". The labels today are jail cells that a person will never be able to shake and the doubt so unbearably heavy suicide is the best remedy.

Father Mike, Thank you for this. As always, your timing is impeccable. My good friend of 19 years committed suicide two weeks ago. My heart aches for her and for her family. I'm still struggling to make sense of it and come to terms with the loss-- she was an incredibly bright, empathetic person that the world lost far too soon. She suffered valiantly with physical and mental illness and had a passion for living. My prayer for her is that she has found the peace and mercy that so escaped her in life. Your words brought me comfort. Again, thank you.

Thank you Father... I have spent most of my teenage and adult life in pain, tempted to take my own life. I've always felt alone and like nobody ever cared. To this day I still struggle with the same thing. I'm a Catholic convert, however ever since I converted, I've noticed a big difference and my faith has helped me tremendously, whereas in the past, I felt like I had no hope at all. There have been a few times even in those moments, where it's almost like I could hear God saying, "I love you." And it came randomly. I don't know. Maybe Father Michael will see this message. But this saw brought me to tears. I'm from Russia. I am a Catholic at the moment for only four months. Before that, I was undergoing catechesis to join the church. I have a mental disorder. And the problem is that in Russia you are really left alone with this problem. I was prescribed a medicine that costs 1000 rubles for 20 tablets. That's a lot. That's why I can't accept them. But my condition constantly makes me think about suicide. And it scares me a lot. Now I was watching funny clips to cheer myself up, and then RUclips offered me this video. I watched. It really made me feel better. Thank you for this channel and such a wonderful smart father.

Great video on an important message. However, I really dislike the phrase, "Suicide is a permanent solution to temporary problems." The fact of the matter is that some people who commit suicide have been struggling with "permanent problems" all their lives - their parents not giving the love and support they need (emotionally, financially, etc.), not having enough food to feed your family, and of course depression, which was touched on in the video. What I'm saying is that if people spend their entire lives struggling with a problem which is not inherently a consequence of their own actions and it drives them to suicide, it is instead a "permanent solution to seemingly-permanent problems," which makes it less of an easy answer to a difficult situation.

I made attempts on my life and was in a coma for 3 days the last time. So I knew what she had gone through. I received a call on my heart to pray for her because she was in purgatory. Of course I prayed adamantly and in only 3 days I received a message from my niece that she was in Heaven! She told me how happy she was and knew that it was me who prayed for her! When my adoptive mom passed away on October, 5th, 2015, I wanted to take my own life. I didn't know how I was gonna do it, but I knew I wanted to. Because I was so overcome/overwhelmed with the emotions that came from her passing, that's what I thought. I was ashamed that I thought that. But nonetheless, I thought of it. I also cursed, resented, blamed, and pushed God away, including the thought of God stealing her from me. Again, the emotions ruling over me! I still get these suicidal thoughts once in a blue moon. Fast forward 3 years, I go back to my church after a 4-5 year hiatus and writing to Pope Francis, about my plight. I tell my priest, EVERYTHING.... Even my thoughts of suicide. He's been helping me so much. I swear God is fiercely present in him, his name is Father Michael Niemczak. I really thank God for him and his help. I still need healing from God though. He and Father Michael is always there when I need to cry or ask for advice or a question. And with Father Michael's blessing, prayers, and permission, I want to be there for others who are thinking of taking their own life.

Thankfully God met me there in the darkness and led me out, and in the light I stand now. Though the darkness of the world troubles me greatly.

Um, excuse me, but you're pretty. Also, I suggest to not focus so much on the negative aspect of why not suicide, but rather on the positive aspect of why not suicide, i.e. don't focus on the consequences as a motivator to keep going (it being a mortal sin), rather put your focus on God's abundant love for you, sister. Who cares what others say, most of the time they're confused anyway, unfortunately. Jesus is always there with you and for you; has been and always will be. Trust me on that ;) We just sometimes forget and fail to realize that, I guess because of all this noise and confusion that surrounds us a.k.a. the storm that causes us to take our eyes off the Lord, who is Truth and Love. I know it can be difficult at times, but think about the positives. Think about how Jesus loves you unconditionally and wants you just because. He is the standard, not something on a magazine or a computer screen or whatever somebody in school says. People can boast all they want, which is usually driven by insecurities in the first place. We should actually pray for people who may 'have it all', because this can easily cause them to become prideful, and we all know that pride comes before the fall. Everything is temporary anyway. So, we need to pray for those popular people that society seems to favor for that short period of time, because it's important for them to get a reality check and humble themselves, otherwise they will never be able to see the Kingdom of God.
*Matthew **23:12* _Those who praise themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be praised._
*2 Corinthians **4:17**-18* _For our present troubles are small and won't last very long. Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever! So we don't look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever._
Oh, btw, thanks for the heads-up. I'll avoid caramel m&m's. Hmm... it sure does sound like it's not a good mix when you think about it :-/ :-P
Take care and God Bless : )

Hi, Father. I just wanted to tell you thank you for this video. I've been fighting anxiety and depression for years now, and through all of that I've always been too much of a coward to kill myself. As for self-harm, the cowardice has not been so strong. But my own priest has told me several times that my hesitance to take my own life is not cowardice, but grace. And hopefully someday that grace will keep me from hurting myself, too. Maybe coming back to this video will help with that temptation when I feel it. Thank you for the video Fr. Mike. I have been dealing with depression/anxiety for a few years now. And it mostly gets triggered by my fight or flight mechanism. I struggle dealing with family matters which often lead to my depression and watching news and articles fuels my anxiety. I feel like no matter what I do or choose to do will have negative results that I can't deal with. When the thoughts race through my head, they hit a brick wall when I think of the impact it would have on my kids to grow up without a father to protect them, make them laugh, teach them, and guide them through life. I am getting help, but I don't feel it's working. I've tried calling the national hotlines, but they are mainly answered by people that want to sit there and listen with no real dialogue exchange.
I have been doing okay lately, but that mostly entails the suppressing of the issues that intensify the depression/anxiety which I will have to face one day.
Pray for me as I will pray for all of you that struggle with depression/anxiety. And again, thank you for the great videos Fr. Mike.

Yes, the show opened up the doors to talking about bullying and mental illness among teens because unfortunately, today's society doesn't think it exists among them and they end up feeling helpless. But you're right, her suicide did nothing for those who bullied her because they didn't care about her and those who did were left to suffer. We have to do more to reach out to these people, eradicate the stigma against mental illness, and emphasize how much these people are loved by us-- and by God. Suicide is one of the most selfish and short-sighted things a person can do, I don't care how much people may try to argue against that objective fact. When a person takes their life, they are inflicting pain on their friends, family, and their community. But they are also showing a complete lack of gratitude for the gift of life they have recieved from God. I encourage people to share this video with their friends on Facebook. This is an important message to get out! God bless all you and keep you.

i just realized this is my first positive experience with catholicism, I like how he talks about faith in a way " this helps me and makes me happy and it could make you feel the same but if you're not religious thats okay too"

Father you talk about mitigating circumstances as possible reasons why a person would not be culpable after committing suicide. And that certainly makes sense to me. However, when a persons life becomes so miserable and hopeless that they are willing to take their own life, where is the sin in that? And where was God as that person progressed evermore dangerously toward that ultimate and final solution. For God to make such a big deal out of suicide, you would think he would be a little more active in revealing himself to those desperate people.

He speaks from blind belief and knowledge. In my mind and through the affirmations of friends who've experienced their loved ones being present in the house, who haven't accepted they died, they were eventually able to move onto the light. I believe heaven and hell both exist on Earth not in a literal sense, but demons dwell on our grounds in disease while higher spirits float above us, around us, and watching us from a higher state. I believe those who commit suicide are given a chance for redemption once they accept God. they are not all doomed to hell. they just need to repent and accept God is all.

Clipper because it’s the taking of a innocent human life. He said it himself. It’s sad, but the logic behind it is sound.

Ibney00 : respectfully, neither he nor you have answered the question. Depression isn’t a self-inflicted problem. Neither would being in intractable pain from some horrible disease like brain cancer. If God and by extension the church is going to make such a big deal out of what in some cases is a completely understandable reason for opting out of this life. Just read my first comment for context; and furthermore Jesus being God knew that he would be killed. If you know that you’re going to be killed and then do nothing to prevent it… there isn’t much difference between that and suicide. I do not advocate suicide, but to tell people they’re going to hell because they took their own lives is a hard sell biblically. We would likely call someone a hero if they didn’t eat and died because they provided what little food they had to their children. But when a person is in intractable mindbending pain or they have descended into the depths of depression and wind up taking their own lives and then say that they are unworthy of God grace is simply not biblical.

Father Mike, thank you! My family is going through a very tough situation. My 13 year old daughter has mental issues and we are seeking help for her. I just want to say, I have always been close to God and I've always taught my children that no one is free from troubles, heart aches and problems, and that God is the answer and that His love for us will strengthen us... I find comfort in your words. The past few days have been filled with tears and sadness because my youngest is suffering inside. She is in a facility where they are helping her and I just want to say that your video came at the perfect time today. Thank you. I don't know what else I can tell her and how else I can show her that she is loved no matter what and that we accept her and support her all the way....it seems there is an ache and loneliness inside of her and I can't seem to get through to her...but I know we are on the right track. Thank you for your powerful words and for giving me the strength to keep going and to keep trusting in the Lord.

People in modern societies are living under immense stress. The feeling of unworthiness, distress from family and interpersonal relationships, competition for upward mobility, anxiety for the future, solitude and alienation......only Jesus can heal our souls! May we pray for those attempting to take their own lives!

Fr Mike you're the best! You're my favorite speaker ever and I was thrilled to find these videos. You are truly amazing and such a blessing to the world. I was wondering if you could do a video on birth control - I have a dear Protestant friend who thinks it's ok, and I've given him very good arguments against it, but he refuses to listen to me. So I just wanted to see if you had things to say about it that could help me explain it better or help convince him. I love you and I'm praying for you! May God bless you always and reward you for your faithful work.

Thank you. I have spent a lot of time worrying about the soul of a loved one who committed suicide, and praying for him of course. I didn't have a clear understanding of the Catholic doctrine on this but in my heart, I always felt like our merciful God wouldn't turn His back on someone with mental illness. Thanks to your video, I have a much better understanding and most importantly, hope for his soul!

Great video Fr. Thank you. I think the merits of the Netflix series 13 reasons why lie primarily in pushing the conversation out of the shadows, and allowing people to begin to seek help more openly, than feeling alone and ashamed. Point taken regarding the "revenge" story, but nonetheless, it was her perspective.
Pivoting, I have lost two close friends to suicide, and as you said, we don't know their hearts. But the moral culpability is not for us to know or to judge or decide. I don't believe you mentioned it, but suicide, apart from the moral/spiritual argument, goes against a very primal instinct of self-preservation, of keeping ourselves alive. It's inherent. And to come to a place where suicide is the answer, it not only counters this fiercest, most powerful of instincts we have, but our minds have to be clouded with illness to come to the conclusion that ending our lives is the answer, "a permanent solution to a temporary problem," as you said Fr.
Many prayers for all those affected by suicide, those who commit, and those who are left behind. May our hearts know more and greater love, by finding the greatest love story of all time.
