This brings back so many great memories. I remember watching it when it premiered in 1987 with my parents. I was 11 years old and I was hooked. While the first two seasons had some growing pains to go through in order to separate itself from comparisons to the original series, there were a number of great early episodes, The Measure of a Man being of particular distinction. Though the show really picks up in season three. I hope you stick with the series to the end and eventually move on to the other Next Generation era series Deep Space Nine and Voyager and the movies.
The first two seasons are pretty ropey in places (mainly because Gene Roddenberry seemed to be still stuck in the 60s when it came to plotting), but after that it rapidly goes into warp drive.
The day before TNG debuted, I read a newspaper critic's review of the pilot. She mentioned that TNG imagines a future so litigious that every starship has a lawyer on board. That confused me, until I watched the episode and realized that she misunderstood the job of "Counselor" Deanna Troi.
First season they were still getting the chemistry mix , 2nd season it started getting better and better . I was a huge fan when it aired and still am .
TNG is my Trek era. Patrick Stewart is my favorite captain as a result. Even when he loses his cool, he is poised and eloquent. I grew up catching random episodes as a kid, and finally did a full rewatch a few years back. I found the most interesting thing about the first season is the costumes. The onesie-style uniform were reportedly terribly uncomfortable to film in, and yet they drop the man-dresses and even Troi's Uhura-style outfit fairly quickly 😅 The evolution of the costumes across the seasons is also very interesting, and I really appreciate when the crew finally get some comfortable fits.
Not to sound like a fanboy in love (or fanman at my old age) but you're one of the few genuine fans of Star Trek (and a genuine youtuber we have not seen in a long time) If you're a gamer then you would probably like Star Trek Online. It takes place 25 years after Star Trek Next Generation. They actually had actors voice their characters in the game. If you check it out now you'll see how Q rewarded gamers for Christmas called Q's Winter Wonderland. I don't think it will be available again soon but you can be "captain" of one of those Jellyfish ships. Save a slot for a Temporal Agent captain which starts the story in Kirk's era. Jump into Star Trek Enterprise when you can God Bless and Happy New Year
A lot of people appreciated La Forge being born blind and choosing to not have it "fixed" with surgery. He was perfectly fine with just using his visor and was perfectly comfortable with his disability.
I was born in 85, and my memories only began in 89, so I was able to start watching the 3rd season right away (though I still saw reruns of the first two seasons as well.)
This was on when I was a kid as well. I would fall asleep at night with this on in the background. I'm 40 now and still fall asleep with it on a lot. This and Frasier provide such a level of comfort that it's hard to top. I'm excited to go on this journey with you and see it through your eyes. Keep up the good work!
There are sone Vulcans around but none on the normal bridge crew and with the huge number of people aboard we don't see everyone. There is peace between the Klngons and the Federation, but the Klingons still have their own separate empire. Worf is a special case, adopted by humans when orphaned as a child, he joined StarFleet, but he may well be the only one. Some people find Patrick Stewart atrractive even at his age, he may look older because of the condition that made him lose his hair, at a young age, his sons have the same condition. Riker is the young, 'action hero' type that Kirk was in TOS, Of course, it makes much more sense for the Captain to stay on board while sending other officers on away missions. It takes a while for then to work out exactly how engineering is organised, In TOS Spock was both First Officer and Science Officer, Riker does not have that dual role, Data is Science officer so is usually chosen by Riker to join away missions.
I am addicted to your enthusiasm! That's what makes your reviews so fun ! The first couple of seasons are over the top, the writing and music and especially the acting at times. It does get much better. To be fair the actors need time to flesh out their characters and so too does the writing. Personally I think the time it becomes really good is after Riker grows a beard!
32:23 Mark! 2.3K Thumbs Up + Mine! 👍 You're welcome, and thanks! ☺️ Notes: My jellyfish remark was a bit premature! 😁 Kelly wanted to be in this as insurance against being killed off in the movies! 😊 Denise Crosby got enough attention to eventually agree to pose for "Playboy Magazine" while the other actresses did not agree. Colm Meany wasn't given a character name yet. This series is shown in proper chronological order. By then, they had learned how to produce more than one episode at a time and still present them in story order. Not being a network series but a syndicated series. Quote: "Star Trek: The Next Generation" is an American science fiction television series which aired in syndication from September 1987 through May 1994. It is the second live-action series of the "Star Trek" franchise and comprises a total of 176 (DVD and original broadcast) or 178 (syndicated) episodes over 7 seasons. End quote! Live long and prosper! 🖖
This pilot was written by D.C. Fontana, who had written some of the best episodes of the original series. She also worked as associate producer for the first half of this season.
The saucer separation thing is because the enterprise d in addition to being a deep space exploration vessel is also basically a giant hotel/convention center. All the civilians and children evacuate to the saucer section while the crew stays and fights whatever.
That is lieutenant Worf. How he became the first Klingon in Starfleet is a very interesting story and they cover itover the run of the series. The Klingon centric episodes that go into his back story where mostlywritten by Ronald D Moore awhi was one of the main writers starting on season3 of the next gent. Moore would go on to produce the Battle tar galatica remake and also the stars show Outlander
The first couple seasons have a couple great episodes and the rest are not very good. Later seasons it flips where almost all are great episodes with only a few bad ones...... you'll love this series. Whenever I can't think of something to watch, I put on TNG.
Yes! My all-time favourite series. This is going to be an amazing run. As much as people talk them down (I understand why, but) I LOVE the first two seasons.
Glad You are starting into the next generation for Star Trek! When you get far enough along, You're going to want to watch the next generation movies, there are four of them... And the first one, Star Trek Generations brings in members of the old original crew and shows the transition of the generations.

Yay!!! So glad you are doing this series. Sometimes the first season gets some flack, but there are some good episodes and each season gets better and better. This is my favorite series! Picard and Data are my fave😎
This was my introduction to Star Trek when I was a kid and instantly loved it. Funny story, it aired at 11am on Sundays and I would always grumble I couldn't watch the whole episode because we had to be at church for noon mass.
I remember as a twenty-something having a few misgivings about this new Trek when it premiered. It was dispelled after this pilot. Jen, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised on how good it gets. A fun fact, it was planned that the original Enterprise would be able to separate the saucer and land on a planet, but it was too costly. That is when the transporter and shuttlecraft came into being.
I had forgotten just how good this episode of TNG was. I still think, Jen, that you will enjoy and appreciate the 12-episode RUclips series, "Star Trek Continues". It leads directly to Star Trek: The Motion Picture" and is someplace that 'No reactor has gone before'..
There are many reasons I enjoy watching reaction videos, but my favorite has to be when someone, like you, points out something I’d never seen before. I was around 14-15 when this episode first aired on TV. 35ish years later, and you point out the music theme switch during the saucer separation! Wow, how did I miss that all these years?? Neat! And thanks 😉👍🏼
Allow me to take this moment to tell you that I think you’re very cute, I love your voice, and your Star Fleet uniform is awesome 😊👍🏼 I’m not an online stalker, but I’m guessing from your accent and manner, you’re from up north? Like Minnesota way? Sorry if that’s too forward to ask, just curious ☺️
Even if you don't do reactions to them, I encourage you to watch every episode. There's more continuity between episodes to this show than there was to TOS, especially if you're going to eventually continue on to DS9 and Voyager, which I sincerely hope you do. It's a heck of a journey and while not every single episode is great, they're all worth watching at least once.
@@jenmurrayxo Great to hear. Also, this is a ways off but if you do plan on watching DS9 and Voyager, I would recommend watching them and the movies in the order they aired along with TNG instead of waiting until after finishing TNG because the shows do occasionally intersect. There are also minor bits from the other two shows that are referenced in the movies.
This episode was originally written as a one hour show by the wonderful Dorothy "DC" Fontana, but when Paramount demanded a two-hour "movie of the week" type pilot, Gene Roddenberry took the script and created the Q character and the story of humanity on trial. Besides the main crew this episode introduces many elements that play a major role in the franchise going forward, such as the holodeck. The unnamed Ensign who is at the forward Ops position on the bridge is played by Colm Meaney an actor from Dublin, Ireland, who you might recognize if you've ever seen Under Siege or ConAir. You noted the music, the main theme is the Jerry Goldsmith theme originally written and used in Star Trek The Motion Picture. After this episode the music in the show becomes much more subtle and mostly stays that way through the next few iterations of Trek. The first season is very much a "finding your feet" season as the actors and writers figure out the tone, writing style and characters. Compared to the rest of the series, season one is a bit weaker but the characters are still very enjoyable and there are some fantastic episodes in there. After the show grows its beard, the writing becomes consistently high quality. I'm already anticipating your first encounters with so many characters and stories. I think you're really going to enjoy this show, and so will we. "I envy you, taking these first steps into a larger world." - Jean-Luc Picard
Science Officer Murray. Star date 2311.26 your mission is continuing. Glad to see you’ve reached warp Drive into next generation. Farpoint is an excellent way to start this new adventure. There are some episodes that featured the original Star Trek crew, such as Mr Scotty appearing in the episode called relic. Spock makes a few appearances as well. Next GEN movies are exceptional, I’m really excited for this next journey 🖖😊
PS: By the way! "Encounter At Farpoint" debuted as a made-for-television movie for some markets and then was shown as a two-parter thereafter in reruns. I got to see it debut as a movie with no waiting a week for the second part! 🎉 I just reported two more scam replies that use "Telegram"! I noticed that word this time! Poor Deanna! She got to be attractive this time! 🎉 But because of "influences from 'Frazier'" or something like that, she gets stuck with an ugly, phallic-looking hairstyle to some, a turd in bondage to me, for awhile! Instead of her uniform, she wears a "gray therapist suit" too! If it weren't for the ugly hair, I may have had a better chance to notice the suit. Marina and I both share a chocolate addiction, and Deanna has it, too. Her wardrobe meant a lot to her, but her hips and butt fluctuated in size and proportions, so the wardrobe people struggled to hide that! She's not supposed to be any bigger than in the pilot! Brent Spiner complained about not being allowed to "grow old and fat" not just because of the costume uniforms and the material that they are made from, but because as an "android" as opposed to "gynoid", he isn't meant to look bigger either! By the way, in 1987, "Spandex" was still a relative novelty and could be used as a futuristic uniform costume. 😀 But once your common granny types could also be seen in it, it was time to change their approach to uniforms! Back then, there was a fashion fad of people wearing oversized T-shirts, with short pants in the summer for guys, except me. I prefer long denim jeans! Gals wore them that way, too, or as dresses. But on some guys, they looked like dresses, too! Well, you may have noticed that "subtle" influence, too, on men's "Casual Duty Uniforms"! 😉 In the past, they may have tried to pass the look off as "tunics" to distinguish them from "dresses"! My point here is for all of the younger people born in this millennium that take males in feminine clothes for granted, and maybe even live in an area with them, that it wasn't always so! They were still experimenting with what they could pass off as the "New Future" beyond the original "Star Trek" set in the 23rd Century as this one is set in the 24th! So that "Casual Duty" look for the men doesn't last long at all! 🖖
Groppler Zorn was played by Michael Bell, who was the voice of Duke in _GI JOE._ In later episodes there will be several characters (the Pakled Captain and a Klingon Captain) played by Chris Latta, who was the voice of Cobra Commander from _GI JOE_ and Starscream from _Transformers._
0:35 Mark! "Gates McFadden"! That's her stage name for acting. For her dancing name she uses her first name, "Cheryl"! She worked in "Labyrinth" and "The Dark Crystal" to name but two. She was a mobile tree in one of them! 😊
TNG is my favourite Star Trek series. It's what was coming out for the first seven years of my life, it's the one I had the most merchandise from, it's the one I watched in reruns and on VHS the most. It's my Star Trek basically. Worf was a very late addition to the cast, which is why he doesn't have a very big role in this episode. Initially Roddenberry didn't want anything he considered a retread of what they'd done on TOS, which is why there isn't a Vulcan in the main cast. However one of the producers convinced him to add a Klingon to the crew, to show how enemies can become allies given the right circumstances, so Worf was added and Michael Dorn was the last cast member to be added. But, that addition to the cast opened us up to learning more about Klingons than we probably wanted to know as the show goes on. Data is the TNG version of Spock basically. And De Forest Kelley agreed to appear, below the standard actors's pay of the time as a favour to Roddenberry.
One of the most highly anticipated reactions I’ve been waiting to see, this was the Star Trek series I grew up watching. Yes it has a pretty rocky start, but it really picks up later on 🖖.
Hi Jen. So glad you enjoyed the first episode of next generation. Make sure to watch more episodes of this first season with the understanding that late in the 2nd season and especially 3rd season and beyond is where the writing gets very strong and you fall in love with the characters and cast as they have so much more depth. Enjoy!! 😊
@@jenmurrayxo Just know that it gets markedly better after Season 1. When it first aired (I'm old) I actually gave up on the show halfway through the first season and had to be convinced to start watching later. And it had gotten. So. Much. Better. Though the show really picks up in season three. I hope you stick with the series to the end and eventually move on to the other Next Generation era series Deep Space Nine and Voyager and the movies.
Star Trek TNG....yes! I'm on board for this.
The first two seasons are pretty ropey in places (mainly because Gene Roddenberry seemed to be still stuck in the 60s when it came to plotting), but after that it rapidly goes into warp drive.
I really enjoyed the series 1-7 5 TV movies and 4 blockbuster movies and Picard 1-3
The day before TNG debuted, I read a newspaper critic's review of the pilot. She mentioned that TNG imagines a future so litigious that every starship has a lawyer on board. That confused me, until I watched the episode and realized that she misunderstood the job of "Counselor" Deanna Troi.
0:15 Mark! Hmm. Okay. Cassie over at "Popcorn In Bed" 🍿 is who I have viewed. Yours are still new to me. Carry on trekking! 🖖
First season they were still getting the chemistry mix , 2nd season it started getting better and better .
I was a huge fan when it aired and still am .
The show improves tremendously beginning in season three
The show jumped the shark without Pulaski.
Not to sound like a fanboy in love (or fanman at my old age) but you're one of the few genuine fans of Star Trek (and a genuine youtuber we have not seen in a long time)
If you're a gamer then you would probably like Star Trek Online.
Jump into Star Trek Enterprise when you can
God Bless and Happy New Year
Gosh! This takes me so far back. I remember being SO excited when I found out a new Star Trek show was coming to TV.
Fantastic to see this made it to RUclips Jen hopefully it will be massive for your channel 🤞🙏🥂
A lot of people appreciated La Forge being born blind and choosing to not have it "fixed" with surgery. He was perfectly fine with just using his visor and was perfectly comfortable with his disability.
Hard to believe they kill Tasha Yar in the FIRST episode! We barely knew her. Good thing she was Q'ed back to life.
One of my favorite theme intros of any show, especially with the buttery smoothness of Sir Stewart's voice.
Yes! My personal favorite Star Trek series. We just named our newest puppy Riker after Number One.
If you didn't already know, Jen, in the opening monologue Picard states "where no one" instead of "where no man has gone before" as it was previously.
Notes: My jellyfish remark was a bit premature! 😁
Kelly wanted to be in this as insurance against being killed off in the movies! 😊
Denise Crosby got enough attention to eventually agree to pose for "Playboy Magazine" while the other actresses did not agree.
Jen, I gave your reaction a like as soon as you got excited at seeing Bones
This pilot was written by D.C. Fontana, who had written some of the best episodes of the original series. She also worked as associate producer for the first half of this season.
This is my all time favorite tv show. I grew up watching this, and watching you react gives me so much joy!
0:53 Mark! See "Star Trek: Generations" to see the "B" model and continuing this series will show you the "C" model!
Star Trek is an amazing journey!! Gets soooooo good!!
I'm so happy this is happening.
The saucer separation thing is because the enterprise d in addition to being a deep space exploration vessel is also basically a giant hotel/convention center. All the civilians and children evacuate to the saucer section while the crew stays and fights whatever.
Yay Next Gen! ✨
Patrick Stewart was on Conan O’Brien podcast recently! 🎧
The appearance of Bones starts the tradition of each new Star Trek series having a cameo of a character from the previous series in the pilot episode.
Not in Enterprise, that came in the final episode.
Enterprise got around that by having a character from First contact in the pilot.@@treetopjones737
@@treetopjones737Well Enterprise did have a recording of a speech Zefram Cochrane made in the first Episode.
Just don’t give up. The show takes off at season 3 and gets great
I'm up to ep 22 on Patreon and I love it! Even the weaker eps will make me appreciate the great eps that much more
The first couple seasons have a couple great episodes and the rest are not very good. Later seasons it flips where almost all are great episodes with only a few bad ones...... you'll love this series. Whenever I can't think of something to watch, I put on TNG.
Well all seasons, have good ones. In the 2nd, are a few one and also a lot of story buildin', which is absolut required!
15:16 Mark! Aha! That's twice now! First with Cassie and now with you! That's explains the meme in which she asks him if he has been "Black" all of his life! 😅😂
Great reaction! Would 100% watch as many of these Trek reactions as you'd make!
Seeing McCoy made me so very happy when I first watched this show. Still does. And his cantankerous wit? Priceless pure Bones.
Great reaction Jen, I'd love to see more for TNG - it becomes top-tier from about season 3/4.
Glad to see you start your TNG journey 🖖
This was my favorite Star trek series ❤
I had forgotten just how good this episode of TNG was. I still think, Jen, that you will enjoy and appreciate the 12-episode RUclips series, "Star Trek Continues". It leads directly to Star Trek: The Motion Picture" and is someplace that 'No reactor has gone before'..
In the words of Picard..
"How I envy you, Jen Murray.. you're just at the beginning of the adventure."
2:39 "You see, Picard, in the Continuum, we tend to have a fondness for cosplay."
I'm watching it all on Patreon, finishing season 1 next week 🖖☺️
V-Ger never turned up to greet the Voyager ship. 😃
Great reaction Jen! Looking forward to more!
Next GEN movies are exceptional, I’m really excited for this next journey
🖖😊
Sweet! One of my ooold favorites--I think this came out when I was in high school. I imagine it's pretty rough in places today, but I still adore it.
PS: By the way! "Encounter At Farpoint" debuted as a made-for-television movie for some markets and then was shown as a two-parter thereafter in reruns. I got to see it debut as a movie with no waiting a week for the second part! 🎉
I just reported two more scam replies that use "Telegram"!
So hyped for this! Thanks, Jen.
I am so excited to re-watch this with you Jen. This is my childhood Trek and I never tire of it :)
Get the DVD's, like I did...
0:35 Mark! "Gates McFadden"! That's her stage name for acting. For her dancing name she uses her first name, "Cheryl"! She worked in "Labyrinth" and "The Dark Crystal" to name but two. She was a mobile tree in one of them! 😊
I’m sure you’re far ahead but Picard’s character really evolves and becomes quite warm and wise :)
More mellow in "Picard"
I enjoyed this very much. You're Vulcan awesome, Jen!
Picard and Data are my two favorite characters on this show. Patrick Stewart is always great.
One of the most highly anticipated reactions I’ve been waiting to see, this was the Star Trek series I grew up watching. Yes it has a pretty rocky start, but it really picks up later on 🖖.
You will LOVE this captain and the crew and the show 😊
Hi Jen. So glad you enjoyed the first episode of next generation. Make sure to watch more episodes of this first season with the understanding that late in the 2nd season and especially 3rd season and beyond is where the writing gets very strong and you fall in love with the characters and cast as they have so much more depth. Enjoy!! 😊
I'm watching it all on Patreon, finishing season 1 next week 🖖☺️
@@jenmurrayxo Just know that it gets markedly better after Season 1. When it first aired (I'm old) I actually gave up on the show halfway through the first season and had to be convinced to start watching later. And it had gotten. So. Much. Better. Basically, you can tell you have a good chance of it being a great episode if Riker (very, very very minor spoiler)...
...has a beard.
My favorite episode in season 1 the last episode. It was great
1. Tin man, 2. Where no one has gone before, 3. first contact, 4. heart of glory, 5. the nth degree... oh, and if you want more Q, the episode Deja Q is his best. (and John DeLancie is one of the best guests I ever saw at a trek convention)
My personal top 5 (today). :)
Love the channel!
If you treat her like a lady, she'll always bring you home. 🖖
this was my childhood. so many beloved characters
