You're watching TNG! Early episodes are a bit shaky but with lots of character- and world-building. Once the writers really learn the characters, and the actors begin owning their roles, it becomes one of the best scifi exploration shows of all time. You're in for a treat!

The day before TNG debuted, I read a newspaper critic's review of the pilot. She mentioned that TNG imagines a future so litigious that every starship has a lawyer on board. That confused me, until I watched the episode and realized that she misunderstood the job of "Counselor" Deanna Troi.
A lot of people appreciated La Forge being born blind and choosing to not have it "fixed" with surgery. He was perfectly fine with just using his visor and was perfectly comfortable with his disability.
TNG is my Trek era. Patrick Stewart is my favorite captain as a result. Even when he loses his cool, he is poised and eloquent. I grew up catching random episodes as a kid, and finally did a full rewatch a few years back. I found the most interesting thing about the first season is the costumes. The onesie-style uniform were reportedly terribly uncomfortable to film in, and yet they drop the man-dresses and even Troi's Uhura-style outfit fairly quickly 😅 The evolution of the costumes across the seasons is also very interesting, and I really appreciate when the crew finally get some comfortable fits.
Massive respect to you going from Undiscovered country to the pilot of next gen, most reaction people would have gone to Generations, I guess you really have gone to where no reactor has gone before, good job, I was already subscribed, so i'm just going to follow you through all seven seasons, strap in, half will be yellow alert, half red.
Morning, Jen! Really looking forward to this. I agree with commenters from the Community tab who say the series improves as it goes along, but I enjoyed it from the start. I think the writing got better, but another factor might be something Patrick Stewart talked about on Conan's podcast, promoting his new memoir. He said during the first season he scolded his castmates for fooling around on the set. But the outcome was they convinced him to lighten up and fool around, too. Sounds like a very playful environment.
First season they were still getting the chemistry mix , 2nd season it started getting better and better . I was a huge fan when it aired and still am .
I am addicted to your enthusiasm! That's what makes your reviews so fun ! The first couple of seasons are over the top, the writing and music and especially the acting at times. It does get much better. To be fair the actors need time to flesh out their characters and so too does the writing. Personally I think the time it becomes really good is after Riker grows a beard!
This pilot was written by D.C. Fontana, who had written some of the best episodes of the original series. She also worked as associate producer for the first half of this season.
if you like this series now, you're going to love from season 2 onward where it really hits its stride. oh, and not only are there Vulcans, there are some very specific Vulcans in this series...
The saucer separation thing is because the enterprise d in addition to being a deep space exploration vessel is also basically a giant hotel/convention center. All the civilians and children evacuate to the saucer section while the crew stays and fights whatever.
I was a kid when Captain Kirk went on a 5 year mission. It was the 70's and Star Trek was syndicated. I was ANGRY when they made a new Star Trek, without Kirk. How could they? No Spock? No Kirk? No McCoy? Was I SO WRONG! I forgot that Star Trek is an idea. An idea that we all share. It didn't matter what culture, religion, sex or any preference you had. I wan to be a Patreon...just so I can take this journey again with you.
Data who is played by Brent spinner, played an amazing recurring role on the of night court, as a hillbilly who with his wife gets in trouble for unusual things. He is an amazing actor. If you saw independence day, he also played the scientist from area 51, dr. Oaken
This brings back so many great memories. I remember watching it when it premiered in 1987 with my parents. I was 11 years old and I was hooked. While the first two seasons had some growing pains to go through in order to separate itself from comparisons to the original series, there were a number of great early episodes, The Measure of a Man being of particular distinction. Though the show really picks up in season three. I hope you stick with the series to the end and eventually move on to the other Next Generation era series Deep Space Nine and Voyager and the movies.
This was on when I was a kid as well. I would fall asleep at night with this on in the background. I'm 40 now and still fall asleep with it on a lot. This and Frasier provide such a level of comfort that it's hard to top. I'm excited to go on this journey with you and see it through your eyes. Keep up the good work!
I was born in 85, and my memories only began in 89, so I was able to start watching the 3rd season right away (though I still saw reruns of the first two seasons as well.)
The first two seasons are pretty ropey in places (mainly because Gene Roddenberry seemed to be still stuck in the 60s when it came to plotting), but after that it rapidly goes into warp drive.
Even if you don't do reactions to them, I encourage you to watch every episode. There's more continuity between episodes to this show than there was to TOS, especially if you're going to eventually continue on to DS9 and Voyager, which I sincerely hope you do. It's a heck of a journey and while not every single episode is great, they're all worth watching at least once.
@@jenmurrayxo Great to hear. Also, this is a ways off but if you do plan on watching DS9 and Voyager, I would recommend watching them and the movies in the order they aired along with TNG instead of waiting until after finishing TNG because the shows do occasionally intersect. There are also minor bits from the other two shows that are referenced in the movies.
The first couple seasons have a couple great episodes and the rest are not very good. Later seasons it flips where almost all are great episodes with only a few bad ones...... you'll love this series. Whenever I can't think of something to watch, I put on TNG.
Yay!!! So glad you are doing this series. Sometimes the first season gets some flack, but there are some good episodes and each season gets better and better. This is my favorite series! Picard and Data are my fave😎
This show evolves and just gets better and better. The pilot was a strong beginning so I'm not suggesting it was bad to start off with, I'm just letting you know that all the characters are refined as the series continues until they become just as significant as the original crew. What is most impressive to me is that this series was a continuation of the original by Gene Roddenberry himself and it's very apparent that he follows his instincts to pursue big philosophical ideas in a fantasy realm, never constrained by the limits of trying to fit the realism of more literal and realistic productions. Star Trek The Next Generation was a show that really did live up to it's promise to boldly go where no man had gone before by providing viewers with a show that not only stood by it's original vision... and did it successfully beyond anyone's expectations. I say that as a Trek fan who's old enough to remember when the original was still new. Both shows can proudly stand as equals. Of course, there's a special place the first of any series holds and so the Kirk, Spock & McCoy series will always be the foundation of the Trek world, but The Next Generation only built on that world in the best ways possible. Star Trek is a very special show in entertainment history, where grand philosophical concepts were explored, urging fans to think, combined with the fun of special effects, great music, comedy and fantasy. I look forward to reliving that magic through your new eyes.
Glad You are starting into the next generation for Star Trek! When you get far enough along, You're going to want to watch the next generation movies, there are four of them... And the first one, Star Trek Generations brings in members of the old original crew and shows the transition of the generations.
This was my introduction to Star Trek when I was a kid and instantly loved it. Funny story, it aired at 11am on Sundays and I would always grumble I couldn't watch the whole episode because we had to be at church for noon mass.
I had forgotten just how good this episode of TNG was. I still think, Jen, that you will enjoy and appreciate the 12-episode RUclips series, "Star Trek Continues". It leads directly to Star Trek: The Motion Picture" and is someplace that 'No reactor has gone before'..
I remember as a twenty-something having a few misgivings about this new Trek when it premiered. It was dispelled after this pilot. Jen, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised on how good it gets. A fun fact, it was planned that the original Enterprise would be able to separate the saucer and land on a planet, but it was too costly. That is when the transporter and shuttlecraft came into being.
0:35 Mark! "Gates McFadden"! That's her stage name for acting. For her dancing name she uses her first name, "Cheryl"! She worked in "Labyrinth" and "The Dark Crystal" to name but two. She was a mobile tree in one of them! 😊
Science Officer Murray. Star date 2311.26 your mission is continuing. Glad to see you’ve reached warp Drive into next generation. Farpoint is an excellent way to start this new adventure. There are some episodes that featured the original Star Trek crew, such as Mr Scotty appearing in the episode called relic. Spock makes a few appearances as well. Next GEN movies are exceptional, I’m really excited for this next journey 🖖😊

There are many reasons I enjoy watching reaction videos, but my favorite has to be when someone, like you, points out something I’d never seen before. I was around 14-15 when this episode first aired on TV. 35ish years later, and you point out the music theme switch during the saucer separation! Wow, how did I miss that all these years?? Neat! And thanks 😉👍🏼
Allow me to take this moment to tell you that I think you’re very cute, I love your voice, and your Star Fleet uniform is awesome 😊👍🏼 I’m not an online stalker, but I’m guessing from your accent and manner, you’re from up north? Like Minnesota way? Sorry if that’s too forward to ask, just curious ☺️
I figured you would enjoy this series, Jen, but I’m a tad surprised that you clearly love it from the first episode! I saw it when it was originally shown in 1987, and I liked the show, but didn’t quite come to outright love it until around the third season, when it had settled into itself and discarded a few things that didn’t quite work before, plus Riker had grown a beard, and the uniforms were redesigned and became a bit less Spandex-y, but also more alien races had been introduced by then and we got to know the characters much better, and we began to get a better understanding of how the Star Trek universe was organized and how everyone related to each other and so on. The series ran for 7 seasons, 4 seasons longer than The Original Series (TOS), so obviously they did something right. Once you finish with the final season, THEN see STAR TREK GENERATIONS (1994), which segues perfectly from the series and is a real emotional roller coaster, and then continue with STAR TREK: FIRST CONTACT (1996), which most fans consider the very best of the Next Generation theatrical films (as do I). By then you’ll also want to start your deep dive into STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE, which began in 1993. Some of the characters from TNG are in that series, along with plenty of new ones, and you’ll be able to see another side of the Federation and the various alien species and threats to the Federation encountered in that series.
Hi Jen. So glad you enjoyed the first episode of next generation. Make sure to watch more episodes of this first season with the understanding that late in the 2nd season and especially 3rd season and beyond is where the writing gets very strong and you fall in love with the characters and cast as they have so much more depth. Enjoy!! 😊
@@jenmurrayxo Just know that it gets markedly better after Season 1. When it first aired (I'm old) I actually gave up on the show halfway through the first season and had to be convinced to start watching later. And it had gotten. So. Much. Better. Basically, you can tell you have a good chance of it being a great episode if Riker (very, very very minor spoiler)... ...has a beard.
Not to sound like a fanboy in love (or fanman at my old age) but you're one of the few genuine fans of Star Trek (and a genuine youtuber we have not seen in a long time) If you're a gamer then you would probably like Star Trek Online. It takes place 25 years after Star Trek Next Generation. They actually had actors voice their characters in the game. If you check it out now you'll see how Q rewarded gamers for Christmas called Q's Winter Wonderland. I don't think it will be available again soon but you can be "captain" of one of those Jellyfish ships. Save a slot for a Temporal Agent captain which starts the story in Kirk's era. Jump into Star Trek Enterprise when you can God Bless and Happy New Year
This is actually a pretty damn good pilot that has really grown on me. Yeah, its a bit wonky in parts, but it does a good job introducing the characters, the setting and new Technology, has great Special Effects for the time, some beautiful music (Dennis McCarthy making his debut here, by 2005 he would have scored literally hundreds of Episodes) while telling a Story that is TREK to its core at the same time. Plus, most importantly, it introduces Q! And that Data/McCoy-Scene never fails to pull at my heartstrings. Overall, I can already say this: TNG is epic. Objectively, _Deep Space Nine_ is probably my favourite of all the Trek-Shows... but somehow TNG is closer to my heart.
So glad you're enjoying TNG, Jen! I really liked your reactions to the TOS movies, and the way you lit right up when Bones made his special appearance was magical. Oh, and keep a close eye on the redshirt who was on the battle bridge with the others early on. He'll show up again quite a few times in the series as a major supporting character - Transporter Chief Miles O'Brien - and become a main cast member on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, which I HIGHLY recommend you watch after TNG or even at the same time (since they did air simultaneously during TNG's last 2 seasons).
This episode was originally written as a one hour show by the wonderful Dorothy "DC" Fontana, but when Paramount demanded a two-hour "movie of the week" type pilot, Gene Roddenberry took the script and created the Q character and the story of humanity on trial. Besides the main crew this episode introduces many elements that play a major role in the franchise going forward, such as the holodeck. The unnamed Ensign who is at the forward Ops position on the bridge is played by Colm Meaney an actor from Dublin, Ireland, who you might recognize if you've ever seen Under Siege or ConAir. You noted the music, the main theme is the Jerry Goldsmith theme originally written and used in Star Trek The Motion Picture. After this episode the music in the show becomes much more subtle and mostly stays that way through the next few iterations of Trek. The first season is very much a "finding your feet" season as the actors and writers figure out the tone, writing style and characters. Compared to the rest of the series, season one is a bit weaker but the characters are still very enjoyable and there are some fantastic episodes in there. After the show grows its beard, the writing becomes consistently high quality. I'm already anticipating your first encounters with so many characters and stories. I think you're really going to enjoy this show, and so will we. "I envy you, taking these first steps into a larger world." - Jean-Luc Picard
32:23 Mark! 2.3K Thumbs Up + Mine! 👍 You're welcome, and thanks! ☺️ Notes: My jellyfish remark was a bit premature! 😁 Kelly wanted to be in this as insurance against being killed off in the movies! 😊 Denise Crosby got enough attention to eventually agree to pose for "Playboy Magazine" while the other actresses did not agree. Colm Meany wasn't given a character name yet. This series is shown in proper chronological order. By then, they had learned how to produce more than one episode at a time and still present them in story order. Not being a network series but a syndicated series. Quote: "Star Trek: The Next Generation" is an American science fiction television series which aired in syndication from September 1987 through May 1994. It is the second live-action series of the "Star Trek" franchise and comprises a total of 176 (DVD and original broadcast) or 178 (syndicated) episodes over 7 seasons. End quote! Live long and prosper! 🖖
Nice one Jen, I think you'll enjoy these, looks like you've watched the whole of S1 on Patreon! I hope you can carry on with all of them. The picture quality is vastly improved since the blu-ray/4K remasters, kids these days don't know how good they've got it ;) I'll enjoy watching your take on these, it's a crazy rollercoaster lol when it's good, it's really good!
0:38 Mark! Greetings, Jen! 🖖 Congratulations on your new reaction series! 🎉 About "Gates McFadden"! She told me in the autograph line at her table/booth and then everyone else, too, once she was on stage, that "Cheryl" is her first name! She uses "Gates McFadden" for her acting credits and "Cheryl McFadden" for her dancing and choreography credits! She's credited by her first name in "The Dark Crystal" at least! She may also be in "Labyrinth"? In one or both of them, she was also a tree! 🤔
A lot of people categorically hate season one, but not me. Although it had its problems. I predict you'll enjoy Encounter At Farpoint and be thrilled at at least one of its surprises.
The first season takes the cast some time to settle into their characters, but the same was true about TOS. You'll notice small changes over time, such as unique uniforms and other wardrobe and make-up adjustments, but the overall character profiles are pretty well established in this episode. (TOS had multiple uniform "inconsistencies" during several of the first episodes and Spock's eyebrows, ear-points and skin-tone were adjusted several times.) One thing that I think you'll notice in the series is how the writing pairs up characters to show relationship dynamics among the peer group. There is the Starfleet rank and protocol dynamic, there are friend group dynamics, couple dynamics, and then add alien cultural dynamics into the mix and it allows all the cast members to really develop their roles to tell profound and impactful stories.
One of the most highly anticipated reactions I’ve been waiting to see, this was the Star Trek series I grew up watching. Yes it has a pretty rocky start, but it really picks up later on 🖖.
Hi Jen :) I met George Takei at a charity event in the 90s. I asked him if he'd ever want to be on TNG. He said that he wouldn't be as patient in the makeup chair as Mr. Kelley was. Years later he showed up on Voyager.
Hi Jen, welcome to the Star Trek Universe, I tried very hard to NOT like The Next Generation. Without Kirk, Spock and McCoy but the show becomes its own and EXPANDS the Star Trek Universe. For me Kirk Spock and McCoy are Legends to the people of this time and their doings are well known., Yes, I am a 63 year old PROUD Star Trek NERD which I LOVE very much. Please enjoy the journey!!!😁😘

Congrats on meeting one of the best characters in all of Star Trek, Q.
The appearance of Bones starts the tradition of each new Star Trek series having a cameo of a character from the previous series in the pilot episode.
Not in Enterprise, that came in the final episode.
Enterprise got around that by having a character from First contact in the pilot.@@treetopjones737
@@treetopjones737Well Enterprise did have a recording of a speech Zefram Cochrane made in the first Episode.
One of my favorite theme intros of any show, especially with the buttery smoothness of Sir Stewart's voice.
if you like this series now, you're going to love from season 2 onward where it really hits its stride. oh, and not only are there Vulcans, there are some very specific Vulcans in this series...
Looking forward to watching more of your reactions to TNG series with you Jen!
Data who is played by Brent spinner, played an amazing recurring role on the of night court, as a hillbilly who with his wife gets in trouble for unusual things. He is an amazing actor. If you saw independence day, he also played the scientist from area 51, dr. Oaken
Now that Night Court has been revived, I really hope Brent will reprise this character in at least one episode.
Fantastic to see this made it to RUclips Jen hopefully it will be massive for your channel 🤞🙏🥂
Q may end up being your favorite character. I loved cosplaying as him during Trek cons
In the words of Picard..
"How I envy you, Jen Murray.. you're just at the beginning of the adventure."
Best TV Show ever made.
I watched the show with my "next generation", my daughters. We are fans. The show really got better and better from season to season. You'll love it.
The first two seasons are pretty ropey in places (mainly because Gene Roddenberry seemed to be still stuck in the 60s when it came to plotting), but after that it rapidly goes into warp drive.
Hard to believe they kill Tasha Yar in the FIRST episode! We barely knew her. Good thing she was Q'ed back to life.
I'm watching it all on Patreon, finishing season 1 next week 🖖☺️
V-Ger never turned up to greet the Voyager ship. 😃
Just don’t give up. The show takes off at season 3 and gets great
I'm up to ep 22 on Patreon and I love it! Even the weaker eps will make me appreciate the great eps that much more
The first couple seasons have a couple great episodes and the rest are not very good. Later seasons it flips where almost all are great episodes with only a few bad ones...... you'll love this series. Whenever I can't think of something to watch, I put on TNG.
Well all seasons, have good ones. In the 2nd, are a few one and also a lot of story buildin', which is absolut required!
Yay!!! So glad you are doing this series. Sometimes the first season gets some flack, but there are some good episodes and each season gets better and better. This is my favorite series! Picard and Data are my fave😎
Yes! My personal favorite Star Trek series. We just named our newest puppy Riker after Number One.
Gosh! This takes me so far back. I remember being SO excited when I found out a new Star Trek show was coming to TV.
Jen, I gave your reaction a like as soon as you got excited at seeing Bones
Space Jellyfish love! Welcome to TNG!
Great reaction! Would 100% watch as many of these Trek reactions as you'd make!
0:35 Mark! "Gates McFadden"! That's her stage name for acting. For her dancing name she uses her first name, "Cheryl"! She worked in "Labyrinth" and "The Dark Crystal" to name but two. She was a mobile tree in one of them! 😊
Glad to see you start your TNG journey 🖖
Science Officer Murray. Star date 2311.26 your mission is continuing. Glad to see you’ve reached warp Drive into next generation. Farpoint is an excellent way to start this new adventure. There are some episodes that featured the original Star Trek crew, such as Mr Scotty appearing in the episode called relic. Spock makes a few appearances as well.
Next GEN movies are exceptional, I’m really excited for this next journey
🖖😊
This is my all time favorite tv show. I grew up watching this, and watching you react gives me so much joy!
Welcome to the Star Trek Family!! I've been a member since the late 70s. Enjoy this journey, and as Q basically said, "I'll be back." He returns several times. Again, welcome!!
Great reaction Jen, I'd love to see more for TNG - it becomes top-tier from about season 3/4.
🔔 JEN - KIRK VS PICARD:
KIRK SAYS "IF YOU TRY THAT AGAIN, I'LL OPEN FIRE!"
ENEMY TRIES IT AGAIN AND HE OPENS FIRE.
PICARD SAYS "IF YOU TRY THAT AGAIN, I'LL OPEN FIRE!"
ENEMY TRIES IT AGAIN AND HE SAYS "THIS TIME I REALLY MEAN IT!"
Star Trek is an amazing journey!! Gets soooooo good!!
15:16 Mark! Aha! That's twice now! First with Cassie and now with you! That's explains the meme in which she asks him if he has been "Black" all of his life! 😅😂
Great reaction Jen! Looking forward to more!
There is an episode entitled Relics. There in that episode you will find Capt. Montgomery Scott.
Q is such an intriguing character. Is he evil, good, or just chaotic neutral and bored? Love you're reacting to TNG and hope there's enough of an audience to keep it going!
To me, he's the best part of the show. I hate his appearance in the first episode, but he's awesome in his other appearances.
TOS had Q-like beings, but no continuity and no name for them.
I hate Q and love John Delancie for doing such a good acting job.
@@RandomNonsense1985 Well... At last, this entity saved the Federation's ass. Otherwise, they hit the not so Swedish guys, without any preparation...
i just wish he would stop calling fred and barney "dum-dums"
I’m sure you’re far ahead but Picard’s character really evolves and becomes quite warm and wise :)
More mellow in "Picard"
Enjoy!! 😊
I'm watching it all on Patreon, finishing season 1 next week 🖖☺️
@@jenmurrayxo Just know that it gets markedly better after Season 1. When it first aired (I'm old) I actually gave up on the show halfway through the first season and had to be convinced to start watching later. And it had gotten. So. Much. Better. Basically, you can tell you have a good chance of it being a great episode if Riker (very, very very minor spoiler)...
...has a beard.
My favorite episode in season 1 the last episode. It was great
Not to sound like a fanboy in love (or fanman at my old age) but you're one of the few genuine fans of Star Trek (and a genuine youtuber we have not seen in a long time)
If you're a gamer then you would probably like Star Trek Online.
Jump into Star Trek Enterprise when you can
God Bless and Happy New Year
Just found your channel, I think it’s really cool that you take the time to respond to so many comments. You’re awesome!
Thanks! ☺️👍
I’m so happy you’re not skipping episodes!! The McCoy cameo is seriously the best. And I learned to love hating Q.
I am so excited to re-watch this with you Jen. This is my childhood Trek and I never tire of it :)
Get the DVD's, like I did...
0:15 Mark! Hmm. Okay. Cassie over at "Popcorn In Bed" 🍿 is who I have viewed. Yours are still new to me. Carry on trekking! 🖖
I enjoyed this very much. You're Vulcan awesome, Jen!
So hyped for this! Thanks, Jen.
32:23 Mark! 2.3K Thumbs Up + Mine! 👍 You're welcome, and thanks! ☺️
Notes: My jellyfish remark was a bit premature! 😁
Kelly wanted to be in this as insurance against being killed off in the movies! 😊
Denise Crosby got enough attention to eventually agree to pose for "Playboy Magazine" while the other actresses did not agree.
The show improves tremendously beginning in season three
The show jumped the shark without Pulaski.
this was my childhood. so many beloved characters
Nice one Jen, I think you'll enjoy these, looks like you've watched the whole of S1 on Patreon! I hope you can carry on with all of them.
The picture quality is vastly improved since the blu-ray/4K remasters, kids these days don't know how good they've got it ;)
I'll enjoy watching your take on these, it's a crazy rollercoaster lol when it's good, it's really good!
0:38 Mark! Greetings, Jen! 🖖 Congratulations on your new reaction series! 🎉
About "Gates McFadden"!
Sweet! One of my ooold favorites--I think this came out when I was in high school. I imagine it's pretty rough in places today, but I still adore it.
Season 1 is a lot of finding their footing, with hints of the greatness that is to come.
A lot of people categorically hate season one, but not me. Although it had its problems. I predict you'll enjoy Encounter At Farpoint and be thrilled at at least one of its surprises.
I agree it's definitely not perfect but it is still a very fun and creative show to watch
Now i've watched back most of this season with Jen's videos, it's not half as bad as I remember.
@@Patriiiiick I might do a rewatch of this entire show I quite like this season it's my comfort show
I don't hate season one and I well remember the anticipation my friends and I had for the night this debuted.
Actually I've never wanted to watch TOS, as I know that's what the 'bad' TNG season 1 episodes are like.. but, really, there aren't many like that.
Hi Jen :)
I met George Takei at a charity event in the 90s.
For me Kirk Spock and McCoy are Legends to the people of this time and their doings are well known.,
Yes, I am a 63 year old PROUD Star Trek NERD which I LOVE very much.
Please enjoy the journey!!!😁😘
Yay Next Gen! ✨
