It is a good thing to provide financial aid to low and middle income students, level the playing field. MIT gave my daughter her very first college admission before she turned 17y old. I am an engineer and was very excited about it. But she and many other American kids are not interested in engineering. She went to Stanford instead. Now she is a MD, practicing academic medicine as assistant professor at HMS in Boston.
She also has a master of medical science degree from joint program by HMS & MIT as a highly selected resident doctors for future faculty members by HMS. So she did go to MIT afterward.
I got my SB, SM and Ph.D. from MIT. I applied to MIT as a foreign applicant back in the late sixties. My family was far from wealthy, and I would not have been able to attend MIT except for their "needs independent" admission policy. The family finance disclosure was for MIT to determine how much scholarship/loan an applicant needed AFTER (s)he has been admitted. BTW, every student was expected to earn some money from part-time jobs on campus (I got a job bussing trays in the school cafeteria) to make up for what MIT would not cover in their financial aid package. I don't think MIT has changed its "needs independent" admission policy. Don't be deterred from applying to MIT because of financial considerations.
The real advantage of going to a school like MIT as an undergraduate is that you will get exposed to the forefront of research work in many fields. The regular undergraduate classes are pretty "standard" everywhere, but you don't go to MIT for learning the usual undergraduate material. You go there to work with the faculty and the graduate students in the various project groups to get a glimpse of the future. I got to learn about and to play with the forebear of what is the Internet today at MIT back in the early nineteen seventies.

你提到的那几个1/4被M 录后选择去的几个学校都没有Merit based scholarship, 都和M 一样只offer need based financial aid.

Not true - MIT is one of the few needed blind schools
