Hahahaha awesome , great topic!! I say the most important thing is to have fun!!!!, follow your own muse, and be yourself in all you do, musically and otherwise. What ever it is that's gets you off is the way you should go and that's where you will find satisfaction and true rewards. Focus on developing an individual voice on your instrument. Keep it fun, and let the business come to you, don't make all about business and then expect it to be fun, my experience has proven it simply won't work.
I noticed that this started as an uncomfortable exchange also. Stu seemed to be the bass educator stressing to learn music and all aspects of the music industry and Jonas the jazz or musical purest. I'm glad I'm retired and collecting money. I play bass and don't have to worry about eating. I play what I want now.
Jonas grew up in Sweden, Stu US. Apples and Oranges. I have met Jonas briefly Tonic NYC and have seen him live with Shawn Lane 3 times. Great player but not very approachable. Maybe he Jonas has or comes from money and can just take it easy and drive a Rolls. Not all have that luxury. During the interview it seems as if Jonas is questioning Stu's integrity and judging him. I agree with Stu. Keep your eyes/ears open and work within all genres. America is a big market compared to Sweden. I worked in photography as a photo assistant for over 10 years and worked within all styles. Fashion, Architectural etc. Learned from all and applied it to my craft/life. As far as music goes it changes for me. I think Madonna's, "Ray of Light" record is great but can also listen To Eric Dolphy and George Russell, Kraftwerk etc,. Didn't Miles cover a Cindy Lauper tune? Fav musician of all time? Bill Laswell. He has mixed a lot of dif. styles w/o compromise. Not a "Whole Lotta Funk in Sweden" Sounds like a good song title Jonas! Coming to ya from Sunnyside Queens NYC not far from Greenpoint Brooklyn.
hellborg is a much deeper thinker than stu ham,....hellborg took the road MUCH less traveled if you look at his music contributions,..stu ham while being an exellent bass player finds security in the musical community a top priority,...Hellborg,....not so much,..these two musicians couldnt be any more different ideologically,..and i dont believe it has anything to do with where they are from,...hellborg is not rich,...hes a gypsy,...traveling from one area to another,...stu ham,...well hes more traditional ,...and thats fine,...i noticed these guys sniping each other but i hope at the end of the day they maintain that respect for each other.....
Sean Ruiz not sure I agree with the deeper thinker comment, but for sure this is like oil and water. I think Stu is more focused on the business aspect and importance of education and career development. Jonas is more unstructured and an artist, not thinking about as how to plan your career and be part of a business. they come from very different worlds. Stu is right on @17:00
Cool, awkward, tense interview, I thought they were gonna have a full on verbal argument at one stage. Jonas is like a Devil's advocate. Great stuff.

Laswell , yes - in certain areas very much a similar thinker as Jonas, very uncompromising.
