Michael Collins used the rising of 1798 as an example of what NOT to do if we were to have any hope of beating the English. A stand up fight against the English would have been hopeless, as it mostly was in 1798. But the principal reason for the failure in 1798 was INFORMERS. Ireland always had an abundance of informers. Collins knew that the 1798 rebellion failed due to informers and the ruthlessness of the English and their loyalist Protestant settlers that they planted here, and based his activities during the war of independence on that fact. The same during the northern campaign of the 1970s and 80s Irish informers and traitors in Dail Éireann, supported by a largely gutless population are the reason the British still hold part our country.
