If you went light with the strokes and distanced the candle a little further from the ceiling the effect might have been better.. but i like the creative aspect of it.. Edit: i realize that might not have worked (on second viewing) what i would do is paint another light coat of white so the dark tones are not so pronounced.

Your idea is good, if we increase or decrease the candle distance, the marble effect also changes in this way.
