@@Lightning14364KThis game has far too many issues to explain in a RUclips comment tbh… But a lot of the issues boil down to: Combat is generally seen as boring and the lack of a battle specific reward makes combat entirely pointless. The game is extremely generic for a paper mario. You go through the same old grass world, desert world, ice world etc. with no unique qualities to them. On top of that, the characters are generic… toad, toad, toad, kamek, bowser jr, toad… Bosses are exceptionally poorly designed. You either beat them in 1-2 turns with the correct thing sticker or you spend ages chipping away at their hundreds of hp. There is no strategy… in an ‘RPG’ Thing stickers are a mess that could take up a full on video essay too… but… they’re just a mess. I hope this explained a little bit!
@@SoEpic69 I have played the game don’t worry. I’ve 100%ed it! And I’m not just biased toward the old games either just to make it clear; I enjoyed colour splash and I adore origami king. The issue with bosses is, even with the fights where you have to damage them further than just using the correct thing sticker, it simply boils down to using more thing stickers- beating the fight near immediately- or spamming regular stickers. Neither involve any ounce of strategy since the bosses aren’t a threat in the first place. Apologies if the points I bring up sound a bit too generic but I guess that just means they clearly are big issues with the gameplay
@@Lightning14364K Combat in general is very shallow. - You can't target any enemy other than the front-most enemy, unless you use a multi-target attack - While the ability to collect your attacks is promising, the fact that they are single-use disincentivizes the implementation of actual strategies. - Combat only rewards the player with coins, which are used to buy stickers, but stickers are required to win in combat. So it's generally ill-advised to actually fight things - Thing stickers aren't the most balanced. There's nothing stopping you from spamming them at boss fights. No resource or limitation other than inventory space. Puzzles are also oftentimes not well telegraphed, or their solution is hidden away. The game REALLY likes to not tell you stuff. (World 2 comes to mind most for this) To put it into perspective, even old-school NES games weren't as cruel with their hidden solutions as some of Sticker Star's puzzles. A player trying to go into this game blind likely wouldn't be able to beat it. You need a walkthrough to enjoy this game. The pacing is also pretty lackluster, primarily due to the game grinding to a halt when you reach a puzzle with an obtuse solution as well as the utter bloat of content in World 3. I usually like dreary settings like that of World 3, but it really overstays its welcome unfortunately. As would be typical in RPGs, one could overlook shallow gameplay in exchange for compelling story or fun dialogue, with Mario RPGs historically being great at both, but there aren't many characters in this game, much less dialogue between them. Bowser doesn't say a single word, Peach's lines are in the single digits, and literally all side characters are just generic toads. You pretty much have Kirsti, Wiggler, Kamek, and Bowser Jr. And they hardly interact with each other at all.
Honestly Sticker Star is a really good game that just has a fundamentally broken gameplay system. The story is decent, the puzzles are usually fun although sometimes quite annoying, the soundtrack is great, and the game isn't filled with bugs or glitches (I only know of one glitch where you can clip out of bounds). If it wasn't for the way the battle system works Sticker Star would probably be widely considered the worst game in the series but still a decent game. What makes the battle system broken? Stickers. You can ONLY attack with consumable items. And what do you get from winning battles using stickers? You get more stickers, and coins. What do you use the coins for? To buy more stickers. I don't need to explain more.
