I like this lady's voice. And I find this process absolutely fascinating. I cant wait to try it.....But I assume that when silvering a telescope mirror there is no backing paint because the surface the silver goes on is the same surface aimed at any light source.
I don't think this will work for first-surface apps such as a telescope mirror, as the silver will tarnish. That is why telescope mirrors are aluminized, as the layer of oxide that form shortly after aluminizing is transparent.

The best way to get a thinner layer of silver is to leave the silver of the glass for less time. You might need to do a few test pieces to get just the effect you want. Also you would need to protect the silver with clear lacquer instead of backing paint.
Silver sticks to Lexan about as well as it does to glass. Since Lexan repels water more than glass does, you might want to treat the Lexan with our Wetting Agent before you silver it. The instructions for using our Wetting Agent are on our website.
I take it would be difficult to make carnival mirrors short/fat. tall/thin etc.i Wich I was at the old crystal beach amusement park years ago when everything went for sale I heard the fun house mirrors went for $80. dollars there were probably about 6 to 10 of them about 24" wide and 4' highway least that was Bach in the late '80's when it was open used to go there a lot when I was a kid those mirrors would be neat in a reck room with a bar ...it would make you smile of drinking or drinking till you're sick. Lol..
That's a great question. We believe that the distortion is created more from the shape of the glass itself than the silver mirroring. You could certainly Spray Silver a piece of glass with curves and distortions and create some pretty great funhouse mirrors. You can mirror many types of plastic. The silver will not make a rough surface look like a mirror. The surface must be very high gloss for the silver to . be reflective. Not bad. If a person cant understand chemistry this might be a good way to get projects done. I Do this with silver nitrate, ammonia. Potassium Hydroxide and dextrose. It is probably not as expensive as this product, but does take more skill.

Yes, you can use this method to create a silver surface on plastic or polymer. You must protect the silver surface with a clear top coat. If you add yellow dye to the top coat the surface will look gold. For more information see the Spray Chrome section of our website.
Fae Valentine It depends on the paint you use. The mirroring chemicals are caustic and, of course, wet. Very often they will just lift the paint off the glass and your image will float away.The one paint we have found that works very well is Pebeo Vitrea 160 - a kind of paint that you bake in your kitchen oven. If you use the transparent version of these paints, the silver shines through and the effect is very beautiful. Because they are baked on, they are not affected by the mirroring chemicals at all. Hello, if you are applying silver over a silvered layer then you do not need to add the Tin for Silver. However, depending on the condition of the silver layer and if there is a copper layer over it you could find it does not deposit in the way that you desire. We usually recommend removing the old silver and applying a new silver layer including the Tin for Silver. Thanks!

Just starting the video... you keep on saying use tap water then you use distilled water to get rid of the tap water. Why not just use distilled water to begin with? :) Stannous chloride (tin chloride) SnCl2 is a reducing agent. In water the tin and chlorine separate into ions (like NaCl salt). Introducing silver nitrate AgNO3 to the aqueous SnCl2 on the glass a chemical reaction occurs and the silver precipitates out and is deposited on the glass.
Hello, You can use distilled water throughout the process if you would like. However, when you are first using the cleaner it is ok to use tap water as it will be fully rinsed off later. This way you can conserve some of your distilled water.
Sorry for the very slow reply. We have a well tested clear lacquer on our website but our customers have found that almost any clear lacquer will work. Any clear lacquer will make the silver look slightly yellow unless you add a transparent violet dye to it, but it will protect the silver from tarnishing and getting scratched.

There are a few ways to do it, but please note that you will need to ensure that the glass itself is not scratched and also, you still may be able to see the scratch. Hello, it depends on what your intended use is of the piece. Graphite is already conductive, so although it is the case that silver will make a piece conductive, your piece already has some conductivity. In order for it to be reflective like a mirror, the silver needs to be applied over a smooth, high-gloss surface like glass, or a high gloss basecoat. I hope this helps!

If you are watching this for fun you probably have too much unallocated free time anyways. I'm trying to make a laser projector from scratch making everything from the galvanometer to the optics with the exception of the laser diode i'm using. I'm pretty good at everything electromechanical/software/mathematics related. But getting your hands on a first surface mirror is generally expensive (although the price is dropping due to laser cutters). Knowing i have potassium nitrate, sodium hydrochloride, silver and Sulfuric acid in my house, i know i can make mirrors. Long story short, these videos are for education, but you can do bitching stuff with knowledge so the fun comes from applying what you learned.

Forgive the silly question, but it wasnt quite clear: Which side do you put the paint on? The mirror side or the plain glass side?
The purpose of the paint is to protect the silver so you cover the silver with the paint. Sorry it isn't clear.

Nik B The black paint she's using protects the silvering. The other side, where you look at yourself in the mirror, has no silvering on it.

Hello, it depends on what your intended use is of the piece. Graphite is already conductive, so although it is the case that silver will make a piece conductive, your piece already has some conductivity. In order for it to be reflective like a mirror, the silver needs to be applied over a smooth, high-gloss surface like glass, or a high gloss basecoat. I hope this helps!

It's milli liter not "mil". It's also Ampere not "amps". If you don't want to use the metric system in the US, don't cripple it.
Who in the heck uses "Ampere"? Oh, you mean it's got a CAPITAL "A"! Now using "Amps" makes sense! Along the same vein, you would then use "wattage" and not "watts" correct? And "voltage" and not "volts", yes? Kilometres/ers and not "Ks" ... yes? btw, the spelling of "milli liter" is one word "millilitre" or, for the US only (the rest of the English speaking world spells it "litre") "milliliter". FYI: The metric system is used in the study of all sciences in the US. Stop trolling.
I have a PhD in physics and I can tell you, that every scientist pronounces "1 A" as "one Ampere". It's not "amps" and it's not "mils".

If you are watching this for fun you probably have too much unallocated free time anyways.
I'm trying to make a laser projector from scratch making everything from the galvanometer to the optics with the exception of the laser diode i'm using.
I'm pretty good at everything electromechanical/software/mathematics related. But getting your hands on a first surface mirror is generally expensive (although the price is dropping due to laser cutters).
Knowing i have potassium nitrate, sodium hydrochloride, silver and Sulfuric acid in my house, i know i can make mirrors.
Long story short, these videos are for education, but you can do bitching stuff with knowledge so the fun comes from applying what you learned.
