I think with all the attention on the house, I forgot what a creative woodworker you are. Two crude shelves and some donated boxes became an elegant tool storage unit and side bench. Impressive!
Thus Michelangelo viewed a block of marble and saw the form of David. Thus Laura Kampf viewed some wooden boxes and saw the perfect workshop.
This felt like a vintage Laura Kampf video. Designing on the fly, using reclaimed materials, coming up with something completely different than what I would have done. New shop build is going to be fun! Thanks for sharing!
Also loved the return to the vintage Laura self-shot look, like those videos that drew me to her channel all those years ago!
@@mattlewis3472 I haven't been watching for that long so I'm used to Felix's camera work, so this is the first time I've seen Laura's self-shots. My immediate thought is this style looks amazing.
I miss the hipster music of the old stuff even more now. Should we start a betting pool on how many videos until the first lamp? 🙃
*_The sound of Felix's voice is what we are gonna miss in videos uploaded from LA_*
GEEEIIIIILLLLLL
@@TheBeetrootman😂
Auch die Art wie gefilmt wird 🥲 es ist so starr
“Intuitive building” - how much of what I do in the workshop, and other things developed with my son, but I’ve referred to it as “inspired creativeness” - a concept that reveals it’s full potential as you progress. Thanks for this video - good luck in everything ahead for you in your new shop.
@@TheBeetrootman "mmmmmmeeeegggggggaaaaaaaa"
Woohooo, shout out to the metal boxes 🤣 A space without metal boxes is no Laura-space at all LOL
My new shop is essentially a metal box…so I MADE IT! Lol
Did you see the aluminium boxes on the truck?!
@@laurakampf 😂
I am repeating myself here but am soooo unhealthily chuffed to find I have metal boxes in common with both Laura and Simone. Mine are steely blue. Can't keep up with either woman on the creativity front but I do have three metal boxes 😁
@@laurakampf So if you have the metal boxes inside a giant metal box, maybe you need to acquire some smaller metal boxes to put in the regular ones, to make some sort of nesting doll situation.
You mentioned AC, but ~Agua Dulce in summer, youll be spending $1500/mo in trying to cool a metal roof. Insulate the inside roof before you fill it up with obstacles! Solar panels too. Love to see you tackle these challenges and defeat them.
This is really good advice!
Came here to say the same thing!
Oh boy! This is in Aqua Dulce!? That means 115, 120° in the summer. 🥵 Please take @scottjoly 's advice, @laurakampf! It'll still be cooking, but maybe remain usable... Best of luck. :-)
Heh, doing a little google maps stalking? I found out Agua Dulce environment myself, but the exact location (fortunately) remains a mistery to me.
Ideally, it would be even better to insulate from the outside. But I think Laura knows that ;)
Simone nailed it with the housewarming gift.
Or "screwed it" as Laura likes screws over nails... ;)
I am embarrassed to say how excited I am to now have something in common with both Laura and Simone: I have three of those boxes in an oily, industrial, steely blue. I have topped the stack of three with a fitted wooden top and they make a great storage/side table that holds art materials or crafting projects.
@@janelte No reason to be embarrassed about it. Just means you have good taste, I suppose.
It is very noticeable how much happier you look in this new episode in your life - lots of smiles, bright eyes and a much lighter attitude - Los Angeles suits you! plus, I'm sure having your new family around you pleases you a lot... I wish you well for the future.
That truck you found was SUCH a good find. It can be extremely hard to find practical trucks in America these days. I live in farm territory and all of the farm trucks are old as hell because newer "trucks" are pointless showpieces too big to fit anywhere without the storage to match. No one who actually needs a practical vehicle can really use them... trucks like yours make me miss the one we had on the farm when I was a kid (old man alert lol).
There are lots of trucks in LA, especially if they are only 2 wheel drive. The 4x4s are much harder to find and expensive.
My son found for me a 4x4 2004 Toyota stick with few miles and garage kept (completely new chassis ) and no one wanted it because it was a manual! We immediately bought it. Has been a super farm truck
Roof racks Laura. Every pickup should have a set of stake roof racks.
Oh, Laura, you've hit the jackpot .. again!! You've worked so hard for it all, and you deserve all the good luck possible!
Love to hear the joy in your voice when you talk about your family! Love and respect, Pia ❤🧡💛💚💙💜
AMAZING job! The little kiddo has no idea what an amazing person she has in her life. As I child I would have been stuck to you like glue, soaking in your creativity!
earthquakes. That's the reason nails are so common on the west coast. you'll see relatively few brick buildings for the same reason. Nails bend when flexed, screws shatter. Our plumbing was copper and now flexible plastic instead of stainless as well.
All I can say is “spray foam insulation” it will make such a huge difference in managing the hot box that is that metal building.
You need two things to make a real Laura Kampf shop: a string of lights and a Laura Kampf sign in the background.
Let's not forget the pink tape labels....
Those tiny hand working and knobs and dials in REAL vehicle that is repairable and usable just melts my heart
Glad you mentioned air conditioning. A metal box in the sun will get a mite warm in the summer near L.A.
Take a look at Ronald Finger's workshop rebuilding videos, as well as Wesley Treat's. They're both in Texas, with similar spaces. Insulation - in depth - is highly warranted. You may want to consider a mini split air conditioner as well. We live nearby Laura's new place, and once insulated, our three-car garage (with an exhaust fan) is pretty pleasant even in the summertime for our hobby space.
This video had such a good old-school vibe! Tripod footage, voice over, small project... really feels like the old days on the channel.
I love your sensible sized pickup truck.
The average size American pickup trucks are just insane.
That's an awesome space. Watch out for rattlesnakes and black widows around your wood piles and such. They will see your new space as comfy place to stay out there in the desertish areas.
I always feel a huge sense of relief when my favourite makers are provided with sawstops. With the additional mental burden of recording everything, I’m glad that there’s some protection from momentary inattention.
I once headed for L.A. out of Germany and have loads of precious memories. Following you on this path is wonderful. Especially since your approach to most things is so lean and straightforward.
You've double the broadness of your content by this. That's so exciting. And precious. And makes me burst with curiosity.
I love it!
Can't wait to see the next episodes.
Best of luck, Laura, and liebe Grüße!
The technical term is force majeure. It was going to be built the way it was going to be built. you (we, cause it happens to me too) are just the tool used to build it. Michelangelo said that he didn't sculpt it, he just cleared away the excess stone.
Thank you ! Beautifully explaint!👌
I have two shops/sets of tools 1,000 miles (1,600 km) apart, and it does sometimes drive me nuts when I know I have the tool I want, it's just 1,000 miles away. I'm gradually filling in the gaps, but I imagine you'll occasionally wish for stuff that's on a different continent. The new shop and your Toyota pickup will be great!
!!!! My grandpa bought this exact car with a shoebox full of cash in 1998 and i was the second owner and LOVED using it back in Kansas. It's with my parents now and sees less action, but we regularly use it to haul loads of dirt and lumber and whatever strange things we see by the side of the road. It (and its longevity, and Lazarus-like ability to keep coming back from the dead) has brought us much joy and i hope you make as many happy memories with your trusty steed. I love how this truck keeps me connected to my grandpa, his workshop, and his resourceful ways and all he taught us, and it's a wave of nostalgia to see it in your videos. I hope to see it many more times as you build your workshop and your life in LA! Welcome to California! 🎉
Welcome to America, where lucky to have you. Looking forward to you're future videos 😊
Just loved your first video in the new shop. I can't wait to see your continued progress in building it out. Oh yeah, and your daughter is just absolutely adorable ❤
A versatile car car, a new shop and a little shop assistant who accepts payment in cookies? Happy you're off to a good start!
Can't wait to see more of what you'll share of your journey.
I'm really excited about all the new content. You're the RUclipsr I've followed since the beginning and I enjoy every station of your journey. I have almost the same professional background as you and I admire you for your creative solutions and your sense of aesthetics. Thank you for all the years of great videos.
Laura you are not only creating your own home(s) but I feel like you have always given me a sense of home as well. Let me explain: I’m German but I lived in the US for the past four years. During this time I always watched your videos and it truly felt like getting a piece of Germany every week it was something I always look forward to and that made feel really connected to home.
Now I just moved back to Germany and I’m starting to really miss the US, especially this kind of grass-roots do it yourself attitude. And again your videos are making me feel so connected to that part of my personal experience (the timing does feel a bit surreal).
So I guess I just want to applaud you on making such fun, and also meaningful content. I’m truly hope that this new part of your life will be everything you hoped for and more!
Really love the Lise Lotte videos, but seeing you do this project made me realise how much I've missed these kinds of builds. So chill, so satisfying seeing you build something awesome out of junk materials. Really gonna enjoy seeing how the new shop shapes up.
Hahahah, I would have just cut the legs off at the appropriate height and *boof* - workbench done. Of course promising myself to build a proper workbench *soon* only to discover 2 years later I’m still on that janky legs-cut-off workbench ;) Soooo looking forward to this new «season» of sorts, you’re now in the country where *everything* is available; tools, materials, weird things, old stuff that can be repurposed, old gas pumps, vending machines and what not - gotta love europe for all it’s quirkyness, but the US … is a place of it’s own - congrats on the «family reunion» and really looking forward to this new chapter :)
🥺 Can’t wait to see the new Laura in this land of « all freedom ». And enjoy life with you family.
I love the long term project video stories you do: The Lise Lotte, Tiny Haus, and now the New Shop in LA. Keep sharing your adventures in creativity!
You seem happier. I’m glad to see that. 😊
Welcome to the neighborhood!.. you came at the perfect time of the year, give you a coupe of weeks of pleasant weather till the heat kicks in…
Need some drought tolerant native plants? They’d need a bunch of watering this summer but would explode into amazing beauty by your third year. No pressure - you have your hands full right now. The seedlings that sprout in our yard are ongoing, so the offer will stand…glad to have you here in LA!
As much as I love Felix’s cinematography, this video felt like old school Laura and super authentic ❤
What? Laura in LA? Wow. I didn´t expect you would move there. Beautiful!
When we built our cabin, the previous partially-built one had collapsed. Before we could use a new nail, dad had us collect and straighten the used nails littered around the property. This was before there were screws. I still straighten out the old before using a new one.
Lostine Oregon!!! yes!! another Magical Place of Nature!! I was born and raised in Oregon and my dad worked in the lumber business (actually i LOVE your connections to Oregon. not just Leatherman, but SawStop originated there and is now headquartered just outside of Portland in Tualatin. sooo cool)
there is so much goodness in that area, while I always come home to Florida(where I don't need to use a vehicle every day)there is something magical about the desert and particularly the Mojave rim. Best of luck, keep using your ingenuity. . . thanks for sharing...
Congrats! Getting a workshop and land anywhere near LA is an accomplishment!
Laura you seem so Happy & Love that you called your new home “your Family” your lil girl has the sweetest giggle! So…nice to see you Beaming🙏🙏🙏Blessing’s
Laura! Make sure to insulate your shop! It can get hot and AC is expensive.
So, so cool and practical! There's going to be lots of good videos from the set up of your shop and I'm here for it. Can't wait!! Missed Felix.
Glad to see you set up shop in the U.S. Love watching your free style work, it is inspiring. So, welcome and good luck!
I've always liked the creative process of "intuitive woodworking". It's so much more freeing than building from a plan. Both have their place though.
Looking forward to hearing you say, “welcome to my shop!”
Welcome to LA. I like how you reuse materials and create with what you have. Looking forward to seeing more of your LA projects.
Get a jackets system set up and see if a swamp cooler would work in your shop. Less electricity to run and cools things significantly but the down side and up side is it adds humidity. I can’t wait to see your projects.
So that your truck is more useful, you should design and build your own truck racks that suit your style. I love watching you take used materials and reinventing a better purpose for it. Looking forward to whatever you dream of for your new shop
Intuition ? Thousands of experiences, for sure 👏🏼👏🏼. it helps. Never saw you so happy.
You make my day 😊 thanks a lot for your videos 🇫🇷
Very cool esthetic and your artistry comes through!!! Great to see you at your most creative, happy self. ❤🌈☘️💖
Love the space and the possibilities it has, and so jelous on your pickup LOL. the quick workbench with storrage is amazing love the recyceling, that is the only way to go in my opinion.
Wow! Intuitive building was amazing! Love the new site. I miss Felix, though.
I love your unplanned builds. They're logical, and buildable by those of us without a lot of big power tools while being scalable for our spaces. Thanks for bringing us along for both the house rebuild and the new shop!
I just moved from the US to New Zealand and am completely starting over from scratch. Sold all my tools back home or gave them away and now I’m rebuilding . This video hits home ❤
Welcome to Aotearoa! Where about in the country are you? Plenty of woodworkers around if you know where to look 😉
I’m way up in Ahipara Northland. Just starting to acquire tools again and the house we are in has a lathe 😊. Looking forward to working with all the different woods here!
I love that you see potential in every object and space! As an autistic maker I very much relate to your organic way of iterating projects. And your family is gorgeous, welcome to the US!
Excellent content. Re-using material is something that we have always done on the farm. I dont know how much access you have had to sawmills on Europe but here.....
Find a mill close to your space, you will love it
I've owned 3 Toyota's, 2 were running perfectly with over 300,000 miles when I sold them...my 13 year old FJ that runs perfectly too, just maintain that truck with regular service and oil changes, it will go and go, I like the bare bones of your Tacoma, very few electrical/computer issues to stop a good mechanically fit vehicle...congrats on the new property.
Laura, I think this project is awesome! I love seeing you start fresh, and everything that takes as a beginner creative. I would love to see cost breakdowns of what it takes to do this. Such as renting the space, ordering the saw stop. Would be helpful to see how much that takes, even if it's in the expensive market of LA.
First project is awesome, just the way I like to build and re-use too :) use what is there and customer make something new to suit your needs.
good to have some balance here from the house restoration to this new bright shop
Living the dream, just beautiful, such a wonderful location.
Really cool to see a blend between your old style of off the cuff projects meeting the house building you've been doing. Excited to see the new shop unfold! Would highly recommend a bit of an insulation project here too, will cut down on the air conditioning bills.
This video really brought back the old vibes of your channel. It's so trippy how long I've been watching your videos and now your new shop is only an hour away from me. Crazy. So happy for you, congrats on the truck and shop!
Also just a warning in case you don't know, those little Toyotas get stolen often around here. Please make sure you lock it up and consider adding some extra precautions.
The first thing about any project is faith in one’s ability, and you have bucket loads of it.
I wish you all the success in the world.
Be safe.
Felicitaciones por tu nuevo taller!!! Que lo disfrutes mucho!! El entorno se muestra bellísimo! Un abrazo!
Germán, Lomas de Solymar, Uruguay
Okay little "laura" is just absolute cuteness....have fun. they grow up fast
I really enjoy the organic approach you have to the work you do……I suspect this is apparent throughout other aspects of how you live and approach life. I discovered your channel through the upload in which you repaired/upcycled a bench along a water way…..your desire to repair rebuild protect and give back is what ‘hooked’ me….I’ve since watched hours upon hours of content you’ve uploaded and have not once been disappointed. Be well.
There is nothing more empowering than setting off for a new and exciting journey. A little fear of the unknown makes it all that much more exciting.
i grew up near where you've shown! welcome!
Laura you are such an inspiration !!! I wish I was a teenager and not in my thirties and being able to pursue totally different life goals. But your creative and problem solving approach helps me dream and build some small projects on my own even today.
Love your videos and love how happy you are in LA !
Cheers from Paris
Beautiful lot and location!! You have a good eye for scouting out a solid place to set down roots. Awesome video! Wishing you Madd Beautiful success!! So talented and innovative.❤
I lived in that area years ago and had a swamp cooler. I liked it much better than A/C
I have 0 background in anything that you do, but you are just fascinating and such a cool person to watch. Cant wait to see this next step of your journey. Sending good vibes from Canada 🇨🇦
I love your new project in the US and I'll stay tuned. I only have one regret, it's all the fun you have with Felix. But you are such a nice person and I have no doubt you'll bond with New friends here.
Laura you look radiant! It feels like you needed this clean slate and new (American?) way of doing things to give you a new breath in this journey. And you already made something very Laura - it does look very on-brand to be very thrifty with materials and build something of very unusual proportions and with unusual use of those boxes ;) I am very happy for you - can't wait to see what is next!
Amazing!! Welcome to LA! There is a great maker community here. Your shop is awesome!
Yay! New shop! Please consider ac or a swamp cooler asap! I'm a California native about 100 miles from your shop (sorry I recognized the landmarks!) and I'm at a higher elevation and I'm already thinking of setting my swamp cooler in my much smaller shop. Consider the best insulation you can manage for that metal shop. Not fiberglass, wet and rodents will make short work of it. Maybe double bubble or unclosed foam board?
Thank you for your posts! You keep me inspired to keep creating 😊
You are gifted with a creative mind looking forward to challenges.
Its always great watching Laura repurpose something old into something new
love that Tacoma... make sure you give her a name! Also, a little time filling in that bump right before the slab of the shop will make for a better experience backing the truck into the shop for many years to come and keep stuff from bouncing around in the truck bed. Congrats Laura and team!
First thing to order in a bunch: Torx screws. Phillips head is a real pain in the a**.
Love the old school style of this video :D
Nice job! And nice new shop! Watching you disassemble the shelves that were there and reusing made me laugh at the synchronicity. I have disassembled 2 box springs from my old bed, and spent the day trying to get the ring shank nails out of the pieces of wood so I can use them to build shelves in a storage closet. I won't ever try to salvage wood with these nails in it again! It's a lot of work, and about 1/4 of them broke instead of coming out.
🎉🎉 so excited!! Love your Time Machine analogy! You really nailed it! The way you explained what a simple Toyota pick up truck, with buttons and lots of space can do to someone’s spirit. Thank you.
Wow that countryside looks awesome and nice first project. looking forward for the next episodes
The only thing I build is puppets but that’s my favorite way to do it too. No sketch, no plan. Best way I can describe it is I let the materials tell me what they want to be. So enjoyable. Can’t wait to see what comes out of this workshop Laura!
this isnt a project video. this is art!
You are such an inspiration! You make me dream about having my own shop..I know I won't, but I love dreaming with your videos..thank you!
Baller Hardware. Nice. I've been going there since I was a toddler. Welcome to Silverlake.
Ey so ne geile Werkbank. Die lässt mich gleich neidisch werden 😍
Been following you for years and I'm very excited for your new adventures :)
That’s a wonderful workbench and stunning storage you’ve built without plans. Not many people can do ‘intuitive building’ and make it look as good as you do.
When most of us try that sort of thing it’s called ‘bodging’. 😂
What a great choice for a ride! Congrats on the new shop!
YES please, I want to see what you can do with fine digital control
At 7:05 I couldn't help but smile seeing the wall go up and seeing the vision come together. I can't say I was here at the beginning of your channel and youtube journey but I'm glad I got to see another beginning for you and are here to see what ever you've got coming in the future.
Na da hat die Laura wohl viel ein "Colt für alle Fälle" geschaut. 🤣🥰😘
Immer!!! Mit meinem Bruder zusammen :)
Whoo- Hoo! Nice start, Laura.
4:26 I used to feel the same way, but nails and screws serve different purposes. Screws are great at clamping, they are terrible in shear. So, if you have differential movement (such as would will experience in an unheated workshop space) then nails can be a better choice.
Of course, when you own a nailgun then every project starts to look like it might have some differential movement... I love my Hikoki airless framer as much as Laura loves her Festool tracksaw.
