Elon Musk Is Spreading Centuries-Old Racist Pseudo-Science

Racist pseudo-science is making a comeback thanks to Elon Musk. Recently, the tech billionaire has been retweeting prominent race scientist adherents on his platform X (formally known as Twitter), spreading misinformation about racial minorities’ intelligence and physiology to his audience of 176.3 million followers-a dynamic my colleague Garrison Hayes analyzes in his latest video for Mother Jones.
X, and before it Twitter, has a long-held reputation for being a breeding ground for white supremacy. Dating as far back as the 2016 election, these extremists have used the app to sow seeds of misinformation and spread racism.
Garrison zeroes in on a specific phenomenon: Musk is amplifying users who will incorporate cherry-picked data and misleading graphs into their argument as to why people of European descent are biologically superior. He shows how fringe accounts, like user @eyeslasho, experience a drastic jump in followers after Musk shares their tweets. The @eyeslasho account even thanked Musk for raising “awareness” in a thread last year. (Neither @eyeslasho nor Musk, via X, responded to Garrison’s request for an interview.)
“People are almost more susceptible to simpler charts with race and IQ than they are to the really complicated stuff,” Will Stancil, a lawyer and research fellow at the Institute on Metropolitan Opportunity, told Garrison in a video interview. He added: “This is the most basic statistical error in the book: Correlation does not equal causation.”
In 2022, just one week after Musk purchased Twitter, the Center for Countering Digital Hate -an online civil rights group- found that racial slurs against Black people had increased three times the year’s average, with homophobic and transphobic epithets also seeing a significant uptick, according to the Associated Press. More than a year later, Musk made headlines once again for tweeting racist dog whistles in a potential attempt to “woo” a recently fired Tucker Carlson. But, his new shift into sharing tech-bro-friendly bigotry carries its own unique set of consequences.
Garrison also talks to Dr. Sasha Gusev, a statistical geneticist and associate professor at Harvard Medical School, who points out that because this racism is seemingly backed by scientific fact, people often lack the language to call out its problematic nature.
“There’s a kind of fusion between old-school gutter racism that everyone can recognize and this new-school Silicon Valley, data-driven analysis. And I think that this is very confusing to people,” said Gusev. “They don’t know what to do with it. They say, ‘Hey, there’s this thing that I recognize as ugly, and then there’s somebody posting a hundred charts that seem to support it.'”

This reminds me of an anecdote I learned in a sociology course long ago. A scientist produced a paper showing that the aboriginal people of Australia did poorly compared to their white counterparts on some test that used simple geometric shapes to determine an aspect of intelligence. Later, another scientist repeated the test, but with photographs of rocks from areas the Aborigines were familiar with. The Aborigines crushed the test, doing far better than their counterparts. Scientists know their work has limitations and always seek to improve their methods. Non-scientists have a result and search for the data to support it.

@cherylwallingford8016. I agree however part of the problem is our economic, political and social systems have winners and losers. In order for a "chosen" group to live better lives, others must be mistreated. Some of the bigotry is based on ignorance while most of it is calculated with a goal. For instance the concept of whiteness has changed in America. It has gone from solely Anglo Saxon to include the Irish and Italians, with the ultimate goal of demonizing people of African descent.

Europeans and Blacks were largely separate for a long time. Slavery led to the mixing of blacks and Caucasians in the U.S. We see hybrid vigor demonstrated in almost every sports team in the country. The fact that we don't see the same in board rooms isn't proof of black inferiority, it's pretty obviously structural racism at work. If the playing field were level, some of us with parents from different continents would rise to the top in every endeavor. _"The first laughable criteria is that IQ does not measure intelligence. It measures culture more than one's ability to think. And because intelligence has so many qualities, it cannot be quantified in one general test."_
You're close, but not quite there.
IQ (intelligence quotient) tests are designed to measure certain cognitive abilities and skills, such as:
      1. Fluid reasoning - The ability to think logically, identify patterns, and solve problems in novel situations.
      2. Knowledge - Acquired knowledge from education and exposure to information.
      3. Quantitative reasoning - The ability to understand and solve mathematical and numerical problems.
      4. Visual-spatial processing - The ability to analyze and process visual details and spatial relationships.
      5. Working memory - The ability to temporarily store and manipulate information in the mind.
It's true that IQ tests have limitations and don't measure all aspects of human intelligence. Factors like emotional intelligence, creativity, wisdom, and practical skills are not fully captured by IQ scores. Additionally, IQ can be influenced by education, socioeconomic status, and cultural factors.
While IQ scores can provide an estimate of certain cognitive abilities, they should not be taken as a definitive or comprehensive measure of one's overall intelligence or potential for success in life.

Elon seems to genuinely think wealth = intellect, which I can understand. If your entire success was based off the random chance of tech and the ability to be born wealthy you might want to ascribe to a philosophy that justifies having obscene levels of wealth. Here's someone who could spent 0.01% of his net wealth and save thousands of lives but doesn't want to. If he can't convince himself he's the best person to have that wealth he's just a guy who got lucky and who should be doing something better with his life.
As an aside he's also a terrible business owner. He deconstructed subways up invent a go cart ride for Teslas that is incredibly inefficient, costly and involves workers being exposed to unreasonable levels of work place safety violations. That's the kind of idiocy he gets to to on his own. The way American business culture works there's very little punishment for being a toxic boss so he's fine. But again it speaks to this same mentality, since he's wealthy he must be right. "Trust me I'm going to invent cave tunnels that make no sense if you understand anything about the problem and I'll defame the people who do understand the issues" isn't the outlook of someone who recognizes their limitations.
So this nonsense fits perfectly into reinforcing his self delusion. Since he also doesn't have the background or intellect to understand complex issues outside his limited field of expertise he can't figure out why it's stupid. And even better it fits his new hypocritical free speech warrior self image. He didn't waste billions of dollars he's saving society through his anti intellectual understanding of free speech where everyone gets it, unless it occurs on another website, costs him money or hurts his ego. Then it doesn't count. In his mind if he can find something "anti woke" that justifies destroying his relationship with at least one of his children and spending money he didn't want to then it will be all worth it because he'll gain the respect he thinks he deserves. Because he's rich which means he must be better than all his critics afterall.

People who share the same background as the person who made the test would obviously score higher marks. Intelligence is learned through your environment. We learn what we need to navigate the places and spaces that we frequent. A child from the inner city may be more adept at reading faces to determine friend or foe. They may know their neighborhood back-to-front to know where to hide if a strange person is chasing them. They may know the best way to fend off a rabid dog. This intelligence is more useful to them than pointing out a divan from a commode whilst identifying the colloquial names couch and toilet.

For anybody that doesn't know pseudo means false. Calling something pseudo-science or pseudo-religion or pseudo-jaywalking is literally just calling it false, like un-science or un-religion or un-jaywalking or false-science or false-religion or false-jaywalking.

He was an Apartheid Baby (pre-Nelson Mandela South Africa). Read "Inequality by Design" written at the time "The Bell Curve" came out. IBD talks about how environment like living in a physically toxic environment full of lead and other heavy metals can reduce one's IQ. Also IQ is plastic. The more education you have the higher your IQ becomes. Also read "A Terrible Thing to Waste" which goes into detail about IQ altering pollution. Not only was Musk raised in a state that made this official policy but he is doing it to get a rise out of people thinking that all publicity is good. If you are in the market for an Electric Vehicle there are more to choose from and the market is expanding all the time.

I have always maintained that Musk was both ignorant and dangerous. A person can be a scientific/business/math genius and still be ignorant. In Musk's case he believes that wealth = clever. And so do millions of stupid people. A really clever person KNOWS that clever = control. But will never tell anyone that secret.
