Love mid 60s to early 70s full-size American cars. Not many things in life bring a smile like rolling down the interstate @ 80,cruise set, and Zepplin blaring in a beautiful land yacht.
My grandfather gave my Mother an opportunity to choose any car in 1973 off a used car lot. She chose a 1969 roadrunner 383 4 speed Sunfire yellow with 11,628 miles.
Seeing that car brings back a memory. It was around November of 1969 and I was out with my dad shopping for a new car. We were in a Plymouth dealership and in the showroom they had several '69 models they were trying to clear out. One of them was a 69 Sport Fury convertible in B5 blue with a white interior. It was pretty well optioned the same way as the one shown. My dad wanted a convertible and would probably have bought it except it was too long and wouldn't fit in our garage. It just so happened there was a 69 Sport Satellite convertible in the showroom. It was Bronze with a tan interior, bucket seats & console. Eventually the car became mine and I fully restored it as salt had done its damage. Being Chrysler Crazy I went through different powerplants and transmissions on it. I restored quite a few different Plymouth and Dodge muscle cars through the years but always kept my dad's car. He appreciated that I had kept and restored it and it put a smile on my face to see how happy it made him. He passed away in 97' and I hung on to it until 2004. People would say why did you sell it and I'd tell them it wasn't the same without my dad being around to enjoy it. It's hard for them to understand but it just wasn't the same. I haven't seen it since but it went to a good home where it could bring some joy to others and help them create memories. RIP Dad.
I have a 69 Fury III too, it runs fine but they sure hit you for parts now days. I bought a couple heater valves this year (one for a spare) and they were over $150 each! I remember paying under $40 dollars for those in the past. Fun to see someone else that appreciates these cars (and is knowledgeable about them!). I recall mine was about $3500 new at Prince Chrysler Plymouth. they’re long gone. It’s always garaged and maintained, it’s going to be a lifetime car for me. It keeps up with traffic and tha air conditioning is super cold!
Nice story and nicer car, Tom! This one takes me back: my Dad went out for a haircut one Saturday in March ‘69 and came home with a new ‘69 Polara 2 door - Y3 cream, black vinyl roof and interior - Mom and I called it the Andrea Doria. Learned to drive on that car and I can tell you that a 383 2bbl can take a ‘69 Bonneville with a 455!
Cool story. Cool car. Having a choice being a 60 year old man I guess I'd take a loaded GTX. If I were college age it would likely be an A12 road runner.
Just look what Plymouth's up to now!! Judy made a great choice in 1969 and this story gave me a smile as wide as this Fury's grille. 😁😁😁😁 Talk about an authentic Washington experience, did anyone else notice the dealer was wearing a rain coat as he handed over the keys to this new convertible?😂😂
My first car was a 69 Fury III, 2 dr hardtop, 318 auto, and friend of mine has a 69 Sport Fury convert very similar to this one, 383 2bbl, floor shift auto. They are awesome cruisers!
That car reminds me of my mother, only car we had for years and years, she was a short women pull the seat up and away we went me and my brothers, Thanks iam starting to cry.
My dad bought a Plymouth Fury, dk green color, it was early 70’s, I think it might of been a’71 and us kids called it the Green Monster. It was pretty cool to ride in! Love the look of these cars!
Iv owned 4 Dodge Phoenix 2 /66 with the poly 318 both white one red trim one blue trim . Also 2 383 pilliares Dodge Phoenix One blue one white both 383 / 2 barrel . MOPAR for life 👍🏻🇦🇺.
Yay! A C-body fan. I'm second owner to my great aunt's 68' Newport Custom. Surprisingly, it's in better shape than the rest of our cars, LOL. This is one nice ride. 👍
@@rocketrestoyayy...C bodies!!! Now get some C forwards on the Channel!!! Might I suggest the 60 dart variety... matadors are super rare and there's a phoenix 2dr for sale in Canada
My first car when I was 15, was a 69 fury III convertible.383-2brl. 292 diff gears. Ice blue, white top. Would have been nice to have A31 package. (3.91 gears with sure grip and better springs) Still a fantastic car. Top end speeds we're crazy. 120-130 id guess. The speedo started to get a shaky needle above 85. Gas was . 56¢ a gallon. I remember filling up from about empty for $14 dollars. Thanks for showing us this beauty
Had a 74 gran coupe with the 400 2 bbl. I outran 3 guys in a 70's olds 98 late one night. It could hold it's own. Bastard trying to keep the light beige seats clean though.
My father had a 69 Sport Fury, dark blue with a white vinyl top and interior, 383-4BBL and A/C. It would run 140 mph according to a friendly LE who clocked him. Great story and a true survivor. I wonder what the A/C option cost back then. That location is def a Mopar fan.
Will watch later I love C bodies! 383 even the 2 barrel you are 100% correct, effortless power, not a dog either and not a pig on gas...I swear they are better than 318's on gas.
Hey Tom, glad to hear from a fellow C body fan 👍. Currently have a 65 New Yorker four door hardtop. Would like to add a 300 L someday, if possible, getting harder to find clean examples. Thanks for the post.
Reminds me of a 300 Hurst our high school instructor had back 1980. He passed away years later and don't know where the car ended up. Who was to know these cars were gonna go up in crazy value.
That's a cool story... I very often find myself wondering about the back stories of many of the older cars I come across. That's also one of the most interesting thing about car shows. You can at the very least get the latest chapter in the cars history.
My family owned a '67 Newport Sedan with the 383 2bbl. Plenty of power - ran well - no 8 track but it had the factory cruise control. Very good and memorable car. 'Fuselage' cars are my favorites too. This Sport Fury Convertible is gorgeous.
That sir is a beautiful car and survivor with a story to tell and you nailed it. I love 69 and 70 furys. Hardtop sport furys just do it for me. They float down the road and yet can haul the mail too. My 70 sport fury still sits here with no one to love it. Told my son It may become furyosa and put teeth in the missing grill and make it a field car lol. Not the fate I wanted for a numbers matching car. But better than a demo car. Good work Tom ❤
The beauty queen made a good choice. Not everything in 1969 was about muscle cars. I remember my 6th grade teacher Mr. Mead....the cool teacher in school, bought a new 1970 Dodge Monaco convertible, then he traded it in on a 72 Dodge Challenger convertible.
G'day Tom, Great story I hope those bastards that hurt Judy's baby get whats coming to them. For me it would be a GTX Convertible Centre Console 440 4 speed Dual Mirrors Limited Slip Diff 8 Track Tacho Cheers Louis Kats 👍
My dream car is two furys a 64 4spd the other is a 72 hidden headlights, console and in B5 or I don't remember the paint code for bright red or the light metallic blue. Glad Judy got her fury back with barely any damage. C bodies rule!!!!!!!!!
My second car was a 1969 Plymouth Fury 3 two door hard top- the same yellow with black interior & a 318 2 bbl. I owned it 1973-75 when it was rear ended while parked on the street by a Buick Electra at around 2 AM & totaled.
Thats a beautiful car. Back in the '80's we sacrificed a '69 Fury for parts on my '57 D100. It was a high mileage, bare bones car. Cut off the frame around the front axle center line. The '69 Fury front clip slid over the outside '57 frame. Welded in the torsion bar cross member. Relocated the spring perches on the 8 3/4 axle. We didn't expect that the Fury had significant engine set back, compared to the straight axle and V8. Cut out 3/4's of the firewall. Used most of the Fury wiring harness. 40 years later, realize a Dakota chassis would be a better swap because of track width. Currently going back through the truck. 4 wheel drum brakes are more than adequate. Not fond of the over powered steering, and brakes.
This yeller droptop looks great. Love C bodies...fuselage gen cars look good...great performers...driven plenty...BUT...i would have picked the barracuda with the Cuda package
I’ve had four MoPars that were this shade of yellow. In 67 it was indeed called Daffodil yellow at Chrysler division. The cars I’ve had were (in order) a 1972 Plymouth Scamp that had been repainted avocado green. The paint was peeling in areas so it was visible. The next one was a 1967 Chrysler Newport. Next was a 1969 Dodge Super Bee, and finally a 1968 Plymouth Fury III Had I won the contest I’d have picked the Roadrunner (I was eight years old at the time) if I were to win the contest knowing what I know now I’d still pick a Roadrunner.
I would have picked a Roadrunner. It's my favorite musclecar. I currently own a '69 Roadrunner convertible. By the way, do you have the window mechanism and chrome edging for the rear passenger quarter window, or know where i can get one?
A friend in highschool had a '68 Sport Fury, same yellow with matching yellow bucket seats. If i could pick any car in the C-P lineup, either a GTX or a 300 convertible.

One thing I never liked, this is a 69 vehicle and after December of 68 they were supposed to have headrests - and the Chrysler headrests are cool looking compared to the other makes imo, but BUT I'll hazard the guess, most 69s seem to not have them. Every 69 GM and Ford had them whether required or not. Seems like Chrysler took the cheap way out and it looks it. I wouldn't want this car purely because it doesn't have headrests crazy as it sounds. Edit: great story though!

Nice old survivor. What is a 2.71/2.76 axle ratio? Which is it? I've owned several 2.71 axles in C,D,P cars over the years, but have never seen this nomenclature before.
Not sure why they used that, believe it was a 2.76 that’s what I’ve seen at least.
Good question. I don't know why two ratios are given. Either ratio is great for the highway!
Nice car. Given a choice, I would have picked a low optioned road runner or a small block barracuda. I appreciate the C bodies, but I personally like a smaller car.
In 69, I'd picked a 426 Hemi/ 4 spd. Superbird or a Roadrunner ... A Fury would have been the last thing on my mind LOL!
Hemi 4 speed RR would have been a good choice.
BTW, When are you going to do a video on those 68's that are in the yard.
I had a 1969 Newport. With a 383.. burgundy black interior
Those 69’s are great cars.
Beautiful C Body 🥰🥰🥰
Elwood Engel left Chrysler at the top of his game in '74. These fuselage cars were his last big design before he retired.
The “formal” 74-78’s were just so 70’s and outdated so quickly.

I always like the Sport Fury, but I also liked the Sport Satellite. It's a toss up for me, but I would also have wanted a convertible.
Think Road Runenr convertible for me! 383 4 speed with air grabber.
Had a green one like that
Those are the best looking Plymouths
I may have chosen the same model, only with the Supercommando 383 and 4-speed. If you could get the same thing today, A/C would have been mandatory.
Up here in the Northwest if the top goes down you don’t need AC much.
My dad had this car. We lost it during the move..
PS I would've picked a GTX convertible, but also there's the Fury III GT which I think was available in 69. If not, back to at least a Road Runner convertible with a 440. Today, I'd pick an Imperial 2 door loaded with options....
Gtx convertible would have been good.
I would have chose a Super Bee or a Road Runner
Had to be a Plymouth or a Chrysler, Road Rummer it is!

That’s a good one but don’t think an A12 road runner would have been good at UW in 1969.
