I've used watercolour on stretched canvas successfully, you can even seal with wax when finished. Alternatively, use diluted acrylics instead of watercolour. You can use water or various mediums to thin acrylic, but using the mediums will preserve the strength of colour. You can then varnish the finished piece, which will also enhance the colours.
