Fun fact: I forget where I read it but there’s new evidence pointing to that the colony actually went to live with one of the local native tribes, seeing that there are documents 50+ years later stating that the population there was found with lighter skin than other tribes as well as blue eyes, which were unheard of with the natives due to blue eyes mainly being a European thing cause of genetics and literal land mass separation
Yup, and Croatoan was the name of the place they were going, supposedly. But the people that came back never heard of it and didn’t know where to find them.
Roanoke Island Native here, and That is one of the more popular answers to the mystery that most go with nowadays around town for the most part. Sounds better than some other theories floated around before. 😅 If you ever come here in the summer they have a nightly showing of a live action highly dramatized retelling of the mystery at a waterfront theatre on the north end of the island.
Can we appreciate Roanoke using science and logic to analyze a monster in a movie that probably had a turkeyologist (aka a dude with a bong and a T-shirt with a cartoon turkey) as it's scientific advisor.
Dark Fact: Squanto, the native who directly advised the Pilgrims at Plymouth was originally from the village that Plymouth was built upon. He had been taken by English fisherman and spent time in England, thus he spoke English and was a good interpreter. During his time away from his village the population was wiped out by disease.
@@danielramsey6141 Thats kind of a myth. Guessing you're referring to the "they only bathe once every 6 months" myth. They did bathe more than that. Not anything we would consider hygienic really. The first official thanksgiving was actually issued by Lincoln during the Civil War as a means of trying to reunite the North and South. The famous painting wasn't actually painted until 1912. And the Puritans regularly had thanksgiving meals to give thanks for anything and everything, not a specific date. Here's the thing about the Roanoke colony. They 'went native'. 'Going native' was one of the two biggest causes for a failed colony 2nd only to starvation. 'Croatoan' very likely referred to a nearby tribe that the colonists joined. Something else we were taught wrong in school: the Pilgrims (they were Brownist Separatists, not Puritans BTW) celebrated a harvest festival with Samoset's village, not a thanksgiving. Hell, the French celebrated the first thanksgiving on American soil in 1564 in Florida, and the Spainish celebrated the first thanksgiving with Europeans and Indigenous Americans (the Timicuans) 50 years prior to the Pilgrims making landfall at the remains of Tisquantum's village ("Squanto", they died of disease (probably plague) while he and Samoset were escaping slavery at a monastery in Spain).
