the music in this scene has always given me literal chills. there’s an almost crazed energy to it that perfectly reflects ice pick joe’s demeanor throughout the movie, it all just puts the viewer on edge. and there part in the end where the melody falls apart in the same way that ice pick joe does…just ugh what a perfect soundtrack, truly scorsese’s best work and the best mafia movie ever made

Ice Pick Joe remains one of the most underrated and undiscussed characters of the series. The story would not be complete without the part he played in it

The death of ice pick joe was truly ironic, what made him climb to the top resulted in his downfall. Truly one of the best ways to take a villain out without feeling forced

It captures so perfectly the emotional landscape of Ice-Pick Joe's last moments--beautiful and terrible.

Ice Pick Joe was always one of my favourite characters, but I feel like he doesn't get the attention or appreciation he deserves. I swear, this scene always makes me cry. Everything about this scene is so somber but also beautiful: the music, the lighting and John Cazale's performance are so masterful. So sad this scene didn't win any Oscars, wasn't even nominated!

Fun fact: when filming this scene it took them 20 takes over two days, because the cathedral they were filming in wouldn’t close for prayer and worshippers kept walking into frame.

No joke, no song has ever made me feel this kind of feeling. Exactly like the name of it, "Demise", but at such a hurried pace from all the panicking piano notes and violin sounds distorting even though that could be a real violinist playing, but the musician themselves are in demise. Overall amazing work, props to the extremely skilled composed who wrote this!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This would remain as the best soundtrack in the movie in my opinion.

i still remember watching this for the first time when i was a child, Joe's death made me so upset for an entire week clocks made me uncomfortable. i think my mom even caught me ripping the batteries out of our kitchen clock bc just the sound of it ticking made me sad (yknow, typical 9 year old behaviour). genuinely Icepick Joe was such a complex character, and the music for his death scene just kinda tied it all together for me.

This is such a layered piece of music: the melancholy, the darkness, the dissonant undertones, a reflection of Ice Pick Joe's mind. His complexity and the symbolism behind his iconic weapon is often overlooked. I believe the tragic death by his own tool ultimately gave him the sense of healing he subconsciously looked for all the time.

I can't believe Goncharov (1973) gave us all such masterpieces for the OST. Not to speak of the cinematography and script. Hell, all the actors really put in their all on their performance, every emotion they went through, I fell as my own, as I saw in screen this portion of their life, enhanced by such wonderful soundtrack. The bells and clock that run through halfway of this short piece gives me chills.
Time is just as inevitable as Ice Pick Joe's demise... but alas, I think in the end, he left a better man for what he did than for what he didn't.

In the version for the then communist countries, this scene was re-shot to take place on a railway bridge instead of in a church (Unfortunately, the presence of bells in this track then lost their meaning)
The version for communist countries at the time removed references to religion and homosexuality because it was against the regime.
I admire Michael Scorsese for putting the effort into filming an alternate version of some of the scenes.

Very dramatic music from a great movie. She emphasizes all the ambiguity of the situation in which the characters find themselves, tickles the nerves and makes the heart shrink even years after watching the film. Truly great cinema, great actors, great director!
