The appetizer is called "peasant appetizer" so...yeah..that was a winter appetizer in the countryside in the times people had land( the more you had the richer you were) ..they all had at least a pig that would be sacrificed at Christmas time and made all sorts of dishes that would last a long freezing winter. Nowadays...when everything is mechanized...their sons and daughters sold their parents land for a few bucks and went abroad to help the west harvest their grains for...a few bucks! "Gustare taraneasca" = Country-side snack / brunch. What you call "pork jerky" is actually Jumari. The wrapped cubes of organs is "toba" and yes, you are not supposed to eat the wrapping 1st layer. :)) I love the way Ivona is eating that spring onion. That's the way to do it!
when I was a kid in early eighties, Poiana Brasov was my favorite dream like resort, with my mom, always stayed in Alpin or Ciucas hotel, and eat at 'Sura Dacilor'...
Great video! Beautiful Brasov is my wife’s home town and even though I have been to Poiana Brasov a few times I don’t think I made it to this beautiful restaurant, next year Jun-Jul on our summer holidays we’ll be there for sure ordering the same as you guys, thank you for sharing your experience with us! Have a great time in Romania!
Very good - excellent. There's another restaurant in Poiana Brasov that has real historical credibility - Sura Daciilor. As far as I understand, parts of that restaurant were used in historical movies filmed in the 1970s. It's always interesting to look behind the scenes, and it's great that this restaurant is adhering to traditional foods.
Ivana could learn romanian easily. Her pronunciation is great :)btw the pork skin is always different . As a romanian I m not a fan of all pork skin either:)) hope you have a great time, guys!
Hi friends! I love your vlogs. You are both sooo personable and doing such a great job showing the world the beautiful country of Romania. 18:40 we called it ČVARCI, here in Serbia. It is a specialty popular in Southesastern Europe, a variant of pork rinds. They are a kind of pork cracklings, with fat thermally extracted from the lard. Preparation of čvarci involves melting the lard. Lard is cut in blocks of about one inch (2.54 cm) in size and slowly fried in their own fat. Milk may be added at this point in order to obtain caramel colour. Process lasts until all fat melts away and only a kind of tough crispy pork rind remains. Onion or garlic may be added as a spice and salt is always used as a condiment. Pieces of skin may or may not be attached. In most common varieties of čvarci, some percentage of pork fat remains. Ps I loveeeee it.
i like that Steve went jungle style on that very first bite :) . Also ..i have witnessed the first Romanian Mukbang. Thanks guys for the amazing experience! 🤗
Hi guys. Just a short explanation on what the food on the platter was. The long thin strips were pork skin that we usually eat fresh when we sacrifice pigs for Christmas, they usually burn the hair on the pig for like an hour or more depending on how old the pig was(younger, softer skin, older, harder, thicker skin), definitely eaten after you rub some salt on it.
The fried pork belly we call “ jumări” and its usually just the belly and back of the pig and it’s dumped in a big 50-100kg pot, on the wood fire and fried without anything but some salt. They fry that until it’s fully cooked. There’s usually loads of actual solid fat left when you remove the “jumări” From the pot, and what’s left is lard or “untură” that we use throughout the year to cook and fry other stuff in.
The salami is probably homemade by them but we don’t normally make it at home everywhere in Romania, just some parts. We do make something like salami that we call “mațe”. We use the organs from the pork like liver, heart, perhaps even tongue, heart in some parts probably(not 100%) and meat of course.
The “tobă” or literal English translation would be “drums”, is probably because they use the stomach to wrap it and usually the stomach could also be used, in older times for drums as well(again not 100%, someone correct me if I’m wrong). The inside of that “tobă” is basically like a broth, in which they add meat, liver and other organs, plus some bones that are taken out before the broth is put in the casing to set( bones release the gelatin that sets it). I’ve honestly never really liked it but my parents do make some for Christmas period.
Also that spring onion we absolutely love to eat with cheese, tomatoes, fried eggs also with “jumări”. It’s most definitely a very Romanian thing to eat 😅
Also the thinner strips of pork belly are one of the best things you usually get in every single Romanian household over the Christmas period. You could have it done with garlic and paprika, paprika only or salted and smoked( most common and preferred). We also prepare the back muscles from pork the same way, as in salt them(keep them in salt for a few weeks, from raw, then smoke for a few days or weeks). Keep in mind we generally do this in almost all homes and everyone prepares it to their own liking.
as Romanians, we add mustard on anything, i guess. But this one goes better with some fresh tomatoes, bell pepper or some onions. And obviously with bread
12:35 that thing is called "sorici" (pronounced almost like "so rich"). That is absolutely delicious when you eat it fresh out of the pork. It may sound weird. But during the Christmas time, there is a tradition in Romania that includes "sacrificing" a pig. He get killed, got his hair burned out with hays, it gets cleaned, washed and...voila! You can consume the fresh "sorici". I bet you'd love the experience...
Thank you guys, its so nice when people say Romania it's not a bad country as may said without coming at least once :) Thank you, you have a new subscriber :)
Another awesome video! We believe that this video is one of the best we've ever watched concerning travel. The two of you are really an awesome couple and appear to be real foodies. We really like your humor and willingness to try new things. We look forward to watching more of your videos.
The meat that is pieces in jelly is called "head cheese" . Traditionally made from the left over bits after the head has been boiled, the meat is picked off and put into a terrine dish, herbs added and then the dish filled with the jelly/aspic/gelatin. It is then cooled til it sets in the fridge.
I just saw your video about the mask museum from the Neamt region. You should definitely check out this New Year tradition during the New Year period. Just visit Moldova, there are parades, and mask bands playing in the villages, it is really something unique that you can watch and film.
Guys, you should put a warning: don't watch it on an empty stomach. I almost bit my monitor. It's just WOW! Now, a tough question: are those appetizers better than mici?:)
hello dears ,you are doing a wonderful job thank you for the nice words about our country, about the green onion , which one eats ivana it is eaten, from the other white end we eat it with different dishes we also use it in salads you should try a Romanian salad with tomatoes, green onions, radish ,can be served with steak and mashed potatoes 👋👋👋
as a Romanian who doesn’t much like our traditional food, I’m enjoying your enjoyment of it. It also warms my heart when you pronounce places correctly and try to learn the names of foods. PS: I’ve never seen anyone eat a spring onion starting from the green part 😂
Wow, I absolutely love your beautiful videos, about my amazing country, Romania! Your comments are great, and you both, have beautiful personalities! That’s why, I subscribed! Congratulations, for making such splendid videos, and thank you for making such a beautiful publicity, to fabulous Romania! Bravo! 👏❤️💐
at min 17:00 you are eating Tobă which is from organs as well, the ears sometimes and the casing is pork stomach - edible, just depends if you like it goes nicely with mustard!
I can tell you a bit about stuff you ate. We tend to use the entire animal so the organs and other parts are mostly used to make things we serve starters, we use then use lean meat as roasts and off cuts for sarmale mici and other ground meats. As for what you had: 19:13 was sorici - its pig skin, most think it's raw but you need to kind of bake it to take it off the pork so it is cooked. 10:42 I think that is jumari, its made by melting the fat from the belly you have pieces with meat and fat, you melt away the fat and the meat becomes crispy ( we do that to get the fat we use for cooking later) 14:00 it is caltabos, it is basically like pate since it's made from the liver but it's not spreadable, I saw you guys trying the membrane that is mostly there to keep it in that shape we don't eat that, it may be salty because it's easier to keep when salty 15:33 is toba, it's made from organs the jelly may come from the bones or it may be store bought. 17:48 is what I would call slanina, it is from the belly, it's fat that is salted it may have some layers of meat depending on the region and sometimes smoked or even powdered in paprika powder, it is one of the specialties that differ a lot from county to county on how they make it. I do prefer the one that has more meat on it though they seem to have the kind that I would enjoy too. I may be a bit late on this comment but I hope it helped.
If you ever find yourself by the city Buzău, going towards Moldova you will find a restaurant Moara Dragaicilor. Totaly recommend, one of the best places to eat Romanian traditional food
The pork belly that is similar to jerky is called Jumări. It's not a dish made on purpose, it's a by product of producing lard, which is used for cooking (like you use now the sunflower oil), or is used to store smoked meat in it for long periods of time. Jumări can be very tasty but is a very heavy food. You should not abuse it. The other pork belly stuff is ham. In Romania it's usual eaten with onion (not cooked) and mustard. The pork skin is called șorici and is a traditional Christmas food. Glad you enjoyed the food !
You should explore the Maramures region. It is amazing. Merry Cemetery, trip with steam train at Viseu de Sus, eating good food at "Casa Iurca de Calinesti" in Sighetu Marmatiei. Also visiting Apuseni Mountains it`s a must. Lots of caves and waterfalls easy to reach.
hi ivanna and steve. the one that ivana tried for the first time is called jumari and is made by melting the fat from the pork belly. the cartabos is made entirely of pig organs and onion, thyme and spices such as salt, pepper, garlic. the other is drum which is generally made from the meat of the pig's head. welcome back to Romania and have a pleasant vacation. p.s. don't bite the drum cover it's just to hold the contents. it's the animal's bladder. and it is called a drum because in the Middle Ages drums were made from pig's bladder.
@@pasaniucdaniel4112 the pig's stomach looks different, but in your area it is done with the stomach, find out that in Transylvania it is done in the bladder.
Thank you all for your support

I just saw your video about the mask museum from the Neamt region. You should definitely check out this New Year tradition during the New Year period. Just visit Moldova, there are parades, and mask bands playing in the villages, it is really something unique that you can watch and film.

Can't wait to visit Romania...
You guys are great!!!
as a Romanian who doesn’t much like our traditional food, I’m enjoying your enjoyment of it. It also warms my heart when you pronounce places correctly and try to learn the names of foods.
PS: I’ve never seen anyone eat a spring onion starting from the green part 😂
Thanks for showing the world what Romania is like 🥰

Thank you for yours promoting and have funn ther its alot of place in Romania beautifull be safe !
at min 17:00 you are eating Tobă which is from organs as well, the ears sometimes and the casing is pork stomach - edible, just depends if you like it
goes nicely with mustard!
Many thanks guys 🙏 people shoud know more about beautifull romania
Hello! Lovely, you reminded me of so many beautiful things you can find in Romania…
2 small things: pork skin is “ sorici” and pork belly is” jumări “
I can tell you a bit about stuff you ate. We tend to use the entire animal so the organs and other parts are mostly used to make things we serve starters, we use then use lean meat as roasts and off cuts for sarmale mici and other ground meats. As for what you had:
19:13 was sorici - its pig skin, most think it's raw but you need to kind of bake it to take it off the pork so it is cooked.
10:42 I think that is jumari, its made by melting the fat from the belly you have pieces with meat and fat, you melt away the fat and the meat becomes crispy ( we do that to get the fat we use for cooking later)
14:00 it is caltabos, it is basically like pate since it's made from the liver but it's not spreadable, I saw you guys trying the membrane that is mostly there to keep it in that shape we don't eat that, it may be salty because it's easier to keep when salty
15:33 is toba, it's made from organs the jelly may come from the bones or it may be store bought.
My God, you two are sooo sweet! 🙂 This is the perfect way you should teste and enjoy our meals: like a child.
Love watching you! 💗😍🙂
Thanks for been a good traveler and went to my city. I am away from brasov .i miss everyone there.God bless
Oh ive been there! That place is so beautiful and the foood! oh..... im hungry....
That fried pork belly is called Jumari. It also was in a caserol in the Piata Obor in București where you went to buy Deer 🦌 salami.
You are unbelievebel guys !!🎉 How much fun I have with you !! 🎉😂😂❤ Cristian
You late to the party pal, they had been there already, they been all over Romania. Brasov was the itch that Steve needed to redeem.
hi ivanna and steve. the one that ivana tried for the first time is called jumari and is made by melting the fat from the pork belly. the cartabos is made entirely of pig organs and onion, thyme and spices such as salt, pepper, garlic. the other is drum which is generally made from the meat of the pig's head. welcome back to Romania and have a pleasant vacation. p.s. don't bite the drum cover it's just to hold the contents. it's the animal's bladder. and it is called a drum because in the Middle Ages drums were made from pig's bladder.
it's the stomach not the bladder
@@pasaniucdaniel4112 the pig's stomach looks different, but in your area it is done with the stomach, find out that in Transylvania it is done in the bladder.
'More food. more better' sounds like the motto of the Canadian Heart Association
The first dish - Romanian "gustare taraneasca" can be translated "countryside appetizer".
That stuff looked so nice, I was getting hungry while eating my food, haha
Try and visit apuseni mountains and some caves there great vlogs 👍👍
Romania 4th position in the world when we talk about food and taste!
