    I'm personally grateful that you review the cheap and cheerful end of the spectrum, it's where most folk start and, for many people it is all they can ever afford. When you don't have much money to start with, it's really important not to waste any of it on flawed, poorly constructed ukes when better models are available in a limited price range.

    Great review, Baz. I am glad that you reconsidered your decision to review some Amazon only brands. We need you to balance out the "glowing" phony reviews that some of these folks post. We need Got A Ukulele to be a beacon of truth in a murky Amazon ukulele jungle!

      Yeah, only fair to keep the balance!

    Great review Baz. As the owner of a Vangoa Banjolele myself those Pro's and Con's are a similar on that instrument too. I probably spent 45 minutes tweaking bits and pieces on it and I am over the moon with it. Don't get me wrong, it's never going to set the world on fire but for the price it is great. Shame those tweaks aren't done at the factory end.

    • @GotAUkulele
      @GotAUkulele  5 лет назад +2

      Yep - that would be key here. And Vangoa are not unusual here - even Kala know that the output from their factory will vary. BUT that's where they have the issue solved by using a dealer network - they are the final link in the chain to weed out (most) of the instruments that should never be sold. Buying direct from the brand through Amazon will never give you that safety net.

    Thanks Baz! I've picked up a few of the Amazon only Ukes, and they gave been pretty great. I've got a Donner tenor with Red Lava Low G strings and an inbuilt tuner, another by Donner; a concert in zebrawood, which is striking to look at, and a soprano by Mugig. All laminate construction of course, but I really like them. The Soprano has Aquila strings and The zebrawood has Black Lava strings. The worst sounding of them is the soprano, but it's not bad. I didn't pay more than $40 bucks for the Tenor, and the rest were in the $30's.
    I take them up to my son's primary school and teach a uke class every February for a month. I've got about 10 off brand ukes for the kids to use (7-10 year olds). My favorite is the Tenor, even compared to my Luna High Tide Concert Koa, which isn't real Koa, but they want you to think it is. I also have several Cordoba Ukes- Including the UP100, which got me into Ukes in the first place. Believe it or not, I made a little review of that UP100 Cordoba after being inspired by your videos a couple of years ago! Here's the link if you would like a good laugh: ruclips.net/video/gb5CwfKMVEc/видео.html (not a plug, I just though you would like to see what you inspired in me... but it didn't last long. This stuff is tough, so Thanks for all your hard work). Cheers!

      Quite liked the Donner I looked at to be fair. The Mugig they sent me, less so. But my gripe with Amazon is always the same. They don’t go through dealers and at this price they need to. It’s a crap shoot on quality control otherwise.

      Donner makes a pretty great Ukulele Bass for the money as well. Around $130 or so. Mine came almost perfect out of the box. I wouldn't be surprised if their ukes were decent for the money as well.

    Great review as always Baz. You know, I think you should do one Amazon review a month. I really enjoyed this honest/non-paid review. It will be a great day when you can find a uke on Amazon that will blow you away :) My first uke was a Lohanu I bought from Amazon. I really enjoyed it. You are 100% correct on a proper set up. Tough to find on Amazon. Thanks bud. See you next week. P.S. - Waiting for blue Enya Nova U carbon to coming in. October better get here quick.

    I just received this uke. Appreciate the review. Personally I really like it for a beginner like me..you get what you pay for. I noticed that it seems they updated their listing to now say the strings are nylon.

    Cool review. This is an example of why I send beginners to your site.
    I personally dislike Amazon very much, but Amazoners will eat this up, if they don't mind paying extra for a setup.

    • @GotAUkulele
      @GotAUkulele  5 лет назад +1

      That's the key with this way of getting an instrument. If you know how to set up, don't mind paying for one, or happy to just keep returning them until you get a decent one - they can be a good deal. But.. most beginners really just want to get going and not deal with this. Sure a deal can be had, but I'd rather a beginner removes the hassle and gets it right first time - you can't guarantee that with Amazon purchases of ukuleles.

    Another great review. What are you going to do with this ukulele? I’d doubt you’d want to give it away as is with those undressed frets.

      Easily dressed. Will tidy it up and donate it to local primary school music class (where a few have gone).

    My wife got an extremely similar uke from amazon, it's actually another brand and it is a soprano, but it has kind of the same look, it really makes me think that those instruments all come from the same factory and branded afterward. They do not sound bad indeed, but rather generic and not really satisfying.

    • @GotAUkulele
      @GotAUkulele  4 года назад +1

      Lots of them do - in fact - lots of big name brands to as well. Where the difference comes in is down to how much they have paid for the 'service'. If it's cheap - it will be done quickly with minimal quality control checking (ie lots of duds). You can, however, use these same factories to get some really nice ukes made. Lots of specialist uke stores do just that - but... you have to be very careful what you specify and what you pay. Simple rule - if it seems too good to be true, it probably is. And not everything from Chinese factories is rubbish. I've seen some really nice stuff from brands like Flight and Snail - they are using same lines - but they are being very demanding on the quality control!

    Do you ever played a Cavaquinho? For me, it was pure love at the first chord. You can get all solid instruments for for less than 100€... And they makes so much fun!

    definitely sounds better than a lot of the cheap sub $100 ukes with well known names.

    • @GotAUkulele
      @GotAUkulele  5 лет назад

      Yeah - the sound is pretty good and certainly on a par with similar Cordoba and Kala models. Just a shame about the final quality control

  • @curtishustace
    @curtishustace 5 лет назад +1

    Have a question. Out of all the Ukes you’ve reviewed, is there a good one to take with me in the car, camping, to work, where it won’t break the bank but is just used to practice on. The sound doesn’t have to be great, but the action would be nice if it was OK to decent. Any recommendations?? Thx!

    • @GotAUkulele
      @GotAUkulele  5 лет назад

      Certainly a regular wooden uke will not stand up well to such scenarios, so I think you are looking at non wood options to be safe. The difficulty there is that unless you want something that sounds like a cheap tin can, they are not cheap. Enya Nova, Outdoor Ukulele and Klos Carbon spring to mind. Bear in mind that action is not a function of a model as such, rather the setup it’s been given. You can have high and low action and pretty much any price Ukulele as it’s adjustable.

    • @curtishustace
      @curtishustace 5 лет назад

      GotAUkulele from the factories a lot of Ukes have a high action which can be brought down with a set up so I get that. And a lot of plastic Ukes are “you get what you get”. So, Let me change gears. Now I’ll take the uke with me and NOT leave it in extreme conditions. Maybe a cheap gig bag. But if it gets destroyed or damaged I wouldn’t be heartbroken, if just replace it. What say now? Haha. I really appreciate your wisdom!

      Without any hesitation. A Magic Fluke Flea. Tough, remarkably well made, sound terrific. I’d never not have one in the collection.

    • @GotAUkulele
      @GotAUkulele  5 лет назад +1

      I think Ohana got fed up with me asking them to provide loan instruments for review. Suspect that will only now happen if enough buyers tell Ohana direct that they want to see one featured on Got A Ukulele. Sometimes my readers emailing brands helps wake them up!

      Common with this sort of instrument - not so much the core instruments fault, but more about the lack of a setup before sale
