- In this video I talk about the best type of junk silver for silver stacking or silver investing. Junk silver coins are dollars, half dollars, quarters, and dimes that were minted in 1964 or before. I do also talk about 40% Kennedy half dollars and 35% silver war nickels in this video even though technically they are not considered junk silver. In recent videos including a junk silver unboxing I talked about how junk silver investing is a good idea, but I haven't covered what part of my junk silver collection is the most preferred until now. I do talk about how you should sell junk silver at face value and not by weight and which junk silver purchases should do better then others. 20 years as a garbageman, yes. Oh, my, yes! (Cue huge grin.) Specific to this video, I find 90% silver along with the other coins that slide back down into the hopper of the truck. Real jewelry also. Sterling and gold. Don't find enough to live on but I do find enough to make it fun!

I grab whatever silver coins are available for a decent price. Because I am a numismatist/coin collector, I also like to find different dates and mintmarks on the coins.
I love quarters. It's how I got started stacking as a kid. My dad taught me which years to look out for in 90% silver and even showed me the differences in sound, weight, and designs with his 90% quarter stack (he had more that just quarters but the quarter is what he showed/gave me first). Could just be nostalgia but I will always love quarters because of that childhood memory.
I love the ladies. Morgan dollars & Peace dollar's. War nickles take up to much space for to little silver. I like buying silverware at garage sales. Thats junk silver my friend. A soup spoon is about 3 oz. I eat honey nut cheerios with one every morning. Now that's junk silver!

Funny thing, my first silver coin ever was a Morgan dollar. I found it as a kid playing around with my first medal detector in a dirt lot.
I think my first encounter with silver was a morgan silver dollar too. My grandfather gave it to me and I sold it to my history teacher in the 4th grade for $11 bucks!

Yeah same here. If the dimes are popular because they're the most fractional, it would make sense the quarters would be more popular than the half dollars. As for wear the dimes would also exhibit a lot of wear but not as much as the half dollars so I get that the half dollars are popular based on less wear.
@@FinnishArmy I get that argument, but you could say the same thing for the roosevelt dimes, and if US currency is devalued I think people will also get educated pretty quick which coins are real silver.
Quarters are probably the most worn due to their wide use in vending machines. Dimes are not used as much and halves are almost never used, so they look much nicer than the average quarter.
Getting a little bit of everything! Kennedys and walking liberties are great.
I go with Franklins and mercury dime because they are instantly recognized as silver. Don’t need a loop to check dates.

Of course, the advantage of having some of each of the junk silver is the same as today with modern alloy coins; namely, you can easily combine them to make purchases. So in a societal breakdown scenario, junk silver becomes your go-to currency. So I stack a balanced array of junk silver. They are also beautiful coinage.
I buy all of that, though I focus on the 90%. I think variety is your friend when it comes to stacking the monetary metals. While I try to make the best deals that I can, I do think that variety or diversity in your stack is worth paying for. Interesting video.
My first silver purchase was inadvertently buying a couple of peace dollars with heavy premiums...a mistake well learned. Glad to have a few in my collection though. They are very pretty coins, i got a few in really good condition!
When your a new stacker and your sitting on a few 1oz rounds + an eagle or two, your pre 65 dimes are “constitutional”. When your sitting on monster box *cough, Baggins* those are “junk” dimes. 😅
Thank you! I've watched so many youtube videos over the years with "Stackers" saying they love to stack low grade Morgan and Peace dollars. It makes me cringe every time! Buying rarer high grade silver dollars for their personal collection is fine, but stacking common/low grade versions in large quantities is a huge mistake due to their high premiums. It seems people are blinded by the love of the coin (guilty) and totally forget stacking fundamentals. It should be added to people's rookie mistake videos. My favorite 90% junk silver is problem free Walkers/Benjamins and Mercs. I don't like stacking any constitution silver that was also made in clad. Just look to recent political elections and events to prove that there are a lot of dumb people out there and educating them on the difference between their clad Washington quarter and my silver Washington quarter is just going to be a headache.
I agree completely. I have acquired some junk silver and I want something easily recognizable as "this is old and special" most anyone not versed in coins or silver will pick a mercury dime over Roosevelt any day. Same with a walker or Franklin
I like getting a little bit of everything in 90% silver. Last week I picked up 3 peace dollars and 3 Morgan dollars for $22 each and that was under spot at the time at my LCS! Thanks for the video 👍🏻
28$ for slicks at one of my lcs's. Obviously gouging is the name of their game. They can take them to the grave before I pay that.

Ive found some real gems in constitutional boxes. I have my best luck at pawn shops. They rarely know what the good stuff is. Recently got a whole roll of what was BU Franklin halves. 3 1949S were in the mix. Unfortunately a few were scratched from the time spent in the junk box, but not all. Got a 1917 Obv S this year too.

1964 Kennedy halves and the 1964 Roosevelt dimes are the cheapest and have the most silver content left. The premium is higher on Franklins and Mercury's and if you buy rolls of those you'll most likely get some slicks. I did the stack test with10 1964 Roosevelts against 10 Mercury's and it's quite a difference.

Excellent junk overview. You and I are 100% almost aligned, as you seem quite analytic about this topic. I have an emotional hate of Washington quarters, and don’t know why, but love barbers and standing liberties. Love the Kennedy half - lots of "meat" on those. Dimes are an all-time winner in my book - the perfect barter item should that ever be needed. Dollars are an acquired taste, but they do have more silver per face dollar in them.

I love quarters. Don’t get me wrong...I stack dimes and halves, as well as Morgans but quarters are my favs. Don’t forgot about the state 90% proofs. They are awesome!
I just got into stacking and watched this.
I was digging through the junk at my LCS and found a few Kennedy proofs from 2003 and 2004 which weirded me out but, apparently, they're 90% FYI.
I'm no expert but I think the best thing you can do is to do the math. At my LCS the halves were $1 over melt but the dollars (cull) were way over melt and $3 over spot. Dimes were also much higher per ounce of silver you were buying although I realize they're smaller.

Excellent Vid! My favorite!! I love the constitutional silver, smallest premiums over spot, and easily sold if needed. Best way to sell if you need to is through a private deal with someone you trust. They will often buy at spot where coin shops buy below spot and sell above spot. I look for folks selling and I will happily pay them spot for their silver which is an advantage to them. IF it's really good stuff, I'll even pay a bit over spot. While I like all of the Junk, I like halves just a wee bit better than the others..mostly because I get more stack value for less physical space. I can stack 8 tubes of halves in the same space I can stack 4 tubes of quarters...so same space (for the most part) is $80 in halves to $40 in quarters. I love morgans and peace dollars and get them whenever I can get a good deal on them...which sadly is not often enough in my opinion. Dimes I love but they do take up a lot of space. HOWEVER I always keep a few silver dimes in my pocket for "trade bait" I also have a peace dollar in an airtite for the same reason.
If you’re a collector, then get them all. If you’re a stacker, 90% and .999(9) all the way

I'm an oddball, I prefer the Morgans. They look and feel the best and if you pay a little more and get better than the culls they are easier to liquidate on ebay, etc and you get the premium back. As for wear, yeah no argument there you do loose weight, but we're talking usually less than 1/2 gram, maybe up to one on a completely slick Morgan. In general for the smaller coins we're talking maybe 5%- 6% loss for slicks, still not too bad and irrelevant for SHTF bartering.

I love the standing liberty quarters the most, but find the lowest premiums on the dimes.
I've gotten all of my junk silver at face value. Nothing better than buying $250 of silver for $16.85. I love scoring those Peace Dollars the most though.
I started with junk Morgans & Peace dollars, not into numismatics. Now Eagles & rounds & bars. Just looked at silver price today - $26.70, 2-27-2021, needs to go higher before I sell. Already retired, so not buying more, unless it goes below $15.00 again, which I doubt. Stack on!

I started stacking silver dollars . I was getting CULL Morgan’s 4 over spot but as silver premiums increased, so did they. I also started off with 40% Kennedy’s because I was getting them at spot and I learned that about 7 of them make up a Troy ounce of silver so I did that for awhile . After 6 tubes and becoming more educated on stacking from stackers like silver dragons and yankee stacking, I focused on dimes bc i was getting them for cents over spot . Quarters as well . I also stack Canadian silver . My coin dealer sells me Canadian silver by the weights of the coins . Comes out to be a very good deal . I have been stacking for almost a year and almost all my stack consists of constitutional silver .
I actually prefer the quarters first then dimes....so if there is anyone out there that doesn't want their quarters, just send them my way. They will have a good home. 😉

Edit: question, I was listening to Yankee and he was saying one of the best fractional silvers is 90% proof quarters. In your experience, since I trust you more, how expensive is the premium on proof quarters, and are they better than worn junk silver?
I stack some of each of the 90% coins, but I have a thing for the half dollars. War nickels tend to be harder to sell because, unlike the 40% Kennedy halves, most smelters don't want to deal with the manganese in them (at least this is what I have been told by a couple of LCS dealers).

I completed Guardhouse boxes for both Quarters and Halves. My experience is has been Quarters were very popular in stacking and sometimes were as hard to find as Halves. I am now onto finish Stacking my Guardhouse box of dimes.
Most commonwealth countries used .925 silver...junk silver. Australia, Canada, NZ, South Africa, Britain. Others like most South American, Germany etc like in the US used .900. So there's a lot of options out there not just the US...it's ALL silver folks.

Another thing that makes it feel like it was worth the effort of sorting my $1,500 spare change collection into years, the first step in seeking out valuable coins in the mix.
I like it all.
Also quarters tend to be more expensive per face value compared to half’s and dimes. Dimes are the least expensive, but half’s are only a bit more per face value and you can stack them easier.

My first collection as a gift was the mercury dime set in 1978 in the dansco album. So I agree with you about the dimes as stacking. When you stack the dimes how do you protect them?
I have 1,452 ozs. of 90%, in a nice spread of Dimes, Quarters and Halves. I do have A LOT of EF & AU Peace & Morgan Dollars, but I bought them several years
ago for $12 each. I would not stack Silver Dollars now, the "culls" sell for over Spot, and I would buy .999 Silver rounds instead. I had several thousand 40%
Kennedy's I got real cheap, but I sold them (several years ago) for a nice profit. I would not stack 40% Halves, as they're much harder to sell, and they sell
for much less than spot (compared to 90%). I had several thousand 35% Nickels that I got so cheap, I couldn't pass up the deal, and I traded those (with
good profit) for a few nice guns. I would strongly discourage anybody from stacking 35% Nickels though (unless you steal them). I happen to like 90%
Quarters, as they're a nice intermediary weight coin for transactions. I got 500 BU MS-64+ Kennedy Halves in tubes, for only 4.5% over Spot a few
weeks ago locally.
I think we will be kicking ourselves in the behind by not grabbing some. It’s a long term play for me

I like being able to put a face value of $140 by combining 2 halves and 4 dimes or a combination of using halves, quarters and dimes to arrive at $1.40 which equals one ounce of silver.

I'm new to silver stacking. I actually found a Morgan dollar and some 50s and 67s Canadian quarter.
Halves & dimes for stacking
Mercury's & walkers (this is because there is no confusion as the keneddies & Roosevelt 's eventually loose the silver content 🤷) only reason other them the Mercury's and walkers are my favorite US coins :)
I also collect world silver
cause I can often get them for spot at my local coin shop 🙌 and I love the variety

Really like walking liberty quarters
I prefer the Washington Quarters. Anything smaller i the hand just feels weak to me. Lol. I have noticed that half dollars are carrying about a .50 premium over quarters and dimes which makes that a no go for me. Although the walking liberty half dollars are the best US coin ever minted imo.
I collect junk silver mainly for the ability to barter if I ever need to do that. So that makes dimes and quarters the most valuable in my book. If it were for how pretty each denomination is, I'd have a different answer.

Half dollars all day long! Quarters when those aren't available. Dimes (for some reason) always seem to get lost, so I typically avoid those.
I collected the most expensive stuff for the low back in 2015 now I am focused on the oldies because it WILL go up an I don’t want to buy at those prices. Don’t short yourself stacker family. I believe it will go up. It has tooo. I look at it as a bargain. This would also be fun for your grandkids. I wouldn’t mine just giving it them
Look for the 1794 flowing hair dollar. I recently did a money short on that.

I traded all my junk silver in plus some cash for a nice looking 1907s liberty head gold piece. I think it was worth it.
Did they make any 40% quarters or dimes? Here in 🇨🇦 1966 was the last year of our 80% silver. In 1967, things changed slightly. The dollar and half dollar remained at 80% silver but the quarter and dime was reduced to 50% silver. And in 1968 , everything went nickle, but for part of the year the quarter and dime was 50% silver made from leftover blanks, once they were done, the rest of the yr they were nickle. The dollar was 100% nickle from 1968, to 1987 when the loonies replaced the Voyagure dollar.
Also the bicentennial qairter and halves sometimes [depending on the mint mark] are silver as well.

"Junk Silver " is a term that ( as I recall) came about after the 1980 spike in silver prices. I knew an old time coin collector who was surprised when he went to a dealer to sell some of his silver coins and the dealer said he just threw most coins into a bucket. Said he was sending them off to a refinery. The old time collector was disparaged that US money was going to be treated so disrespectfully and refused to sell them.
But ultimately most people didn't care and the term 'junk' kind of stuck.
It's the same at a certain coin store on NC. A store which I despise enough to open a store next to them if there was space available.
I personally like the Franklin haves best but the 64 Kennedy halves are always in the best condition because it was the last yr of 90%, just like the Canadian 1967 dollar and half dollar, most in unc or almost unc because they were rarely spent since they too were last yr of silver.
Morgans, SLQs and Barber and Seated coins if you can get them for spot or even a little above. They always command a premium and are very sought after. That’s what I buy
I can't say I have ever seen Barbers ( my favorite) at spot unless they are totally slicked out, which isn't what I want anyway. I try to buy them in G/VG problem free condition, I think they still look pretty decent in those grades.
so I must be doing it right, I got a few 21 Morgans $1 over spot, a few different halfs at face from box hunts and maybe a little more over spot the ones that bite me are the dimes but I want to diversify my "junk" silver.
War nickels are also undesirable because they contain manganese, which most refiners cannot process. That's a major reason they are unpopular even compared to 40% halves.
