They do this in Vietnamese Buddhist culture as well. They don’t think that the dead is still alive but that their spirit is still around. After a person passes they will still set a place for the person who has passed at the table before they eat then call for them. Ex:”dad it’s dinner come join us.” I am not sure about other families, and I am no longer Buddhist, but my family will do it for a set amount of days and then the food is offered to the altar. I think in the movie he doesn’t think his wife is alive but that her spirit or soul is trapped and that he can bring her back. (Just my interpretation with my experience)
