Ian Thomas..I think he played a few roles in a Canadian half hour comedy called The Red Green Show..check it out...one of his roles was a crazy bush pilot!
I never took the time to read the lyrics and clearly had no idea what he was talking about. I just heard it the other day while driving in my car and once again I wondered why he was singing about a pilot. This is pure poetry, exceptional writing. He is amazing, his vocals are so cool. I love the way he draws out the words (disappeared....destination...etc). The funky bass line is iconic. One of the best from that era and definitely proud that he is Canadian.
thanks Pat--didn't know he was Canuck until now. well it's somewhat interpretational, however, Pilot i believe is referring to the biblical Pontius Pilot, and he is mentioning the Salt Flats because it is a another prophetic allude to area 51(the paranormal incidents). there are more professional biblical interpreters now, which is because you can't put the pieces of the puzzle together, or at least for anyone interested in the Bible . my own 'Bible' is the AA basic text ever, however, during one of the anti-vax rallies last year, one evangelical fellow told me what has been happening was prophesized in 'Enoch.' in any case, Bob Lazar was a guy involved in much of the paranormal and had quit working at area 51 because of what he saw(alien technology), and had went public with it all. i'm pretty sure Ian was prophesizing about certain things going on now.
A very talented underrated singer, musician and songwriter who should have been recognized for a lot more than the guy who just sang the "Painted Ladies" song.
COMPLETELY AGREED!!!!! Another song that EPITOMIZES that would b "Riders In Dark Horses" (reminds me of fellow Canadian Bruce "If I Had A Rocket Launcher" Cockburn). If Ian's a "1-Hit 1der", the Maple Leafs just 1 the Stanley Cup (luv 2 c THAT happen).
I wouldn't have guessed "Pilot" as the name of this song... It came on the radio one night, and I was scrambling for my song finder, which I didn't have on my new phone, at the time. Luckily, the radio's website had the song name... I hadn't heard this in a long time. I took a liking to it, when I first heard it. It's a great sunset song.

I've known the song for years, but this is the first time that I realized that they didn't actually take off, during the song. While they are waiting for the word, they are terrified because people are outside, trying to get onto the ship! That is what is going on as it ends. It suggests a great plot for a story or a movie...

I don't think the pilot is God in this case. The "pilot" is just the human being who happens to be in charge of flying the plane/spaceship outta dodge when the experiments these cunts have been running, fully explodes and destroys humanity.
I'm neck deep in a really weird rabbit hole right now. Ian Thomas himself has stated that this song was inspired by a British mockumentary that aired in 1977 called Alternative 3. It was an attempt at an April Fools joke that was botched by the producer because they could not get the April 1 timeslot. Because of this a lot of viewers thought it was real and it created a small British media panic similar to the "War of Worlds" airing narrated by Orson Wells in the U.S. The subject of the faux documentary was that global warming was already well in the process of making the Earth uninhabitable and a covert American-Soviet initiative had begun to execute "Alternative 3" where top scientists and global leaders, along with a slice of the population were to travel to Mars using the moon as a staging area and start life anew. The film depicts that wildlife is found on mars upon arrival, but the tie in novel depicts that the expedition finds that Mars has a breathable atmosphere. The subject of this fiction hits a whole lot harder in 2023 than it did in 1977, especially considering the impact this mockumentary and the subsequent fictional tie in novel had on the world of conspiracy theorists. I would not be at all surprised if Elon Musk has this whole ordeal swimming in the back of his brain, but that is only speculation on my part.
Great Canadian talent here, that deserved way more recognition than what he got.
