  • KITKA Women's Vocal Ensemble and Zado Eastern European Vocal Ensemble co-present:
    “Dragana i slaveja”
Bulgarian folk song from Elin Pelin, in a setting by Philip Koutev and Maria Kouteva
Performed by International Virtual Balkan Community Choir Project
    Directed by Tzvetanka Varimezova
DRAGANA I SLAVEJA (Dragana and the Nightingale)
    Dragana sits in the garden,
In the garden under a white rose bush
She embroiders, she sings a song.
    Above her a nightingale speaks:
    “Let’s have a singing contest.
    If you outsing me,
You will cut off my wings.
    If I outsing you,
I will cut off your hair.”
    Dragana outsang the nightingale.
The nightingale sadly pleaded with her,
    “Cut off my legs
    But don’t cut my wings.
    I’ve hatched little chicks.”
    “Dear little nightingale, little bird,
I don’t want to cut anything.
For me, it is enough of an honor that
    I outsang a nightingale.”
Our international virtual choir is honored to sing this great composition as part of our 2020-21 “Artistry of Balkan Singing” project, supported in part by funds from the California Arts Council, the National Endowment for the Arts, and donations from generous individuals. We were led by choral director, master vocalist and teacher, Tzvetanka Varimezova, who is loved throughout the world for her clear, brilliant folkloric soprano voice. We dedicate this recording to the memory of Philip Koutev, to his family, and to the ensemble that bears his name. We are grateful to the Koutev family for allowing us to publish this recording and to Bulgarian-American visual artist, Biliana Stremska, for permission to feature her beautiful painting at the beginning of the video.

Such beauty from so many very different lives and experiences in far corners of the world! I wonder about these lovely artists, what their lives are like, what makes them feel most alive, what is precious to them? Sending each of them prayers and good wishes from my heart, Siddika

Inspirational. Love knows no borders. We are all human, with the same hopes and sentiments. We all come together to celebrate music, life, humanity, regardless of who we are, where we are, what we do. Thank you so much.

@@shiracion1164 I attended your F&S concert with my wife and two teenagers (17 & 15 yo) -- It was the highlight of our season. We have many fond memories. We were particularly impressed how your unique voices both blended and stood out, if that makes sense. The Balkan jerky tempi and incandescent dissonances are like mental yoga on a roller coaster -- once you let go and go with the flow, you're transported and transmogriphied to emergent strata of terrestrial phenomenology. May you thrive and flourish. Yishar ko'akh!

It's славей. Славея is the short version of the definite article, used when the noun is not the grammatical subject.

    Slightly more accurate lyrics:
Dragana sits in a garden, (mome* Dragan[a], Dragan[a])
A garden, under white rosehip, (mome Dragana, Dragana)
Embroiders and a song sings. (mome Dragana, Dragana)
Above her a nightingale speaks; (mome Dragana, Dragana)
"Sing, let us compete, (mome Dragana, Dragana)
Should you outsing me, (mome Dragana, Dragana),
My wings you shall cut. (mome Dragana, Dragana)
Should I outsing you, (mome Dragana, Dragana),
Your hair I shall cut." (mome Dragana, Dragana).
Dragana outsings the nightingale, (mome Dragana, Dragana)
The nightingale pitifully begs; (mome Dragana, Dragana)
"My legs cut, (mome Dragana, Dragana),
My wings, don't take them, (mome Dragana, Dragana)
Little chicks I have hatched." (mome Dragana, Dragana)
"Little nightingale, little bird, (mome Dragana, Dragana)
I desire to cut nothing. (mome Dragana, Dragana)
For me, it suffices, the honour (mome Dragana, Dragana)
That a nightingale I have outsang." (mome Dragana, Dragana).
*mome = slightly archaic Bulgarian word for young, unmarried lady, equivalent to the French 'madmoiselle'.

There is nothing archaic about mome. And it is mome DraganO ( vocative)
