Yes, USB OTG works out of the box for stuff like keyboards & mice etc, but to use mass storage devices you'll need to root first. I never bothered with it so far, as I have the Kingston Wi-Drive (which I reviewed very recently if you're curious).
I've been looking at these as a birthday gift for daily use, but was caught up due to some previous reviews I've seen. I've seen almost all of your reviews and I probably trust you more than most other sources when it comes to reliable reviews of gadgets. Great review and thank you for doing it.
On all android devices you can add social media widgets, if you wanted customizability you should have got an Android tablet, iPads are great devices but the nature of iOS is that it's a instant-use device, it works well how it arrives but isn't easy to change much.
Great review I like how you were completely honest towards how you used the nexus and where it fits in your life! You are the first person i have seen to give an in depth view to this tablet with an educated opinion towards where it fits in! Thank you
its awesome how honest you review the Nexus 7 and just say what i think about all the other guys who reviewed it, without making the device worse...glad i found you :)
2 speakers does not automatically imply a stereo sound-stage. They are simply FAR too close together to generate any kind of stereo effect. It's like cramming both earbuds into one year, you just aren't going to experience a separated sound-stage.
Hey Nate - did you end up viewing any PDFs on it? I've noticed on my ASUS Transformer that some PDFs can stutter a little and have long transition times. Given the grunt power of this unit, I was curious how they fared - if you tried any. Cheers.
Great video. I have an iPad 3 and have been shopping around for a more portable tablet and I gave the Nexus 7 a whirl. I'm really impressed with it and your video did a fantastic job of covering the various plusses and minuses of the device. Going to follow your videos in the future.
Very good review. It is nice to find a channel that gives good consideration to reviews and not as you say just yelling about how good it is. Will be subscribing. Thanks!
Excellent, witty, unbiased review. A pleasure to watch. I've done a bit of experimenting w/ multiple USB chargers and I found that anything with an output of 500-700mAH will not work. All of my chargers that are 1A or more didn't have any problems charging the N7. They did charge a bit slow which may be better for the battery but they also got a bit too warm for my liking. For the record, the N7's stock charger is 2AMP and charges crazy fast. (harder on the battery when it comes to longevity?)
Great review. I'm sold. I'm buying this device (my first tablet) at $299 in Sweden. But with 32 GB. Most reviews seem "old enough" to not mention this alternative size. Thank you Blunty.
Thanks, also, about the apps, does the Nexus 7 have apps for bass, crossover songs, or to make your music sound better. I just found out about the Nexus 10, I'm thinking about getting that instead or the 8. What's your thoughts about them?
Very good review sir. I liked the info. Isn't there a 32g version now? Would you say it's definitely worth it over a Galaxy tab 7inch? I've seen it does have GPS so does that mean we could use this as a Google sat nav? (perhaps if we use wifi to plot the route first...)
Great review Blunty, why am I just finding out you were doing these as well? (I kinda thought you only did cameras). Well I will definitely be looking for more. Thanks.
Fantastic. I really like your reviews. You don't show biasness like many other tech reviews. You go in depth, share the good, the bad, and the ugly- and even then, you made me want the Nexus 7 even more vs the hyped up folks making feel like "I dunno.. He/she seems a bit too excited". Thanks. I'm getting my 3DSXL and surely will be getting the Nexus 7 later on.. Maybe after WiiU.. Or before, I'm not sure, but I'm keeping an eye on it. I'm so very tempted...
I am currently waiting to see if Google is actually going to release 32GB version of N7. I was also trying to decide between N7 and the newly announced iPad Mini. Your review was just one of the best I've seen so far and make me want to buy N7 even more. Subscribe.
I agreed with every word you said. Probably the most unbiased review I have ever heard. By the way I subscribed to your channel mainly coz I wanted to learn a thing or two from the way you talk, which is good oration. Was glad to watch your video. Thanks.
before ordering a nexus 7... i was just wondering i have seen a hand full of people that have some problem with the screen of nexus 7... the one your using can i know if its still functional / in good working condition ? does it have any problems in its screen ? and how long do you got the device ?
How was reading on the thing. I wish to use my future device for reading books and comics plus the general web surfing on the couch and such. But you say that the screen show text a bit jagget, have you read books on the device for longer periods of time and if so, how was it?
Hey Blunty, do you think I should get the Nexus 7? I already have a jailbroken iPad 3rd generation. All I want the Nexus 7 is for the emulators. I do have some emulators for the iPad, but I want the Nexus 7 because it is a little bit more lightweight and portable when I just want a game to play while waiting. So is it worth it to buy the Nexus 7 just to play emulators? I appreciate your opinion! :D Thanks!
Thanks for the review Blunty. You said you prefer the iPad for creating. Being an iPad user myself, I wondered what your standard apps are for video and photo editing? Anything you can recommend?
Excellent commentary blunty -- Absolutely love the usage as one of my biggest gripes with android is the UI lag. How good is the stock browser in it? i hope the performance and scrolling / resize to be smooth. Cheers.
Hey Blunty re-watching this review because my original iPad 1 sadly broke the other day :( Are you gonna be doing an iPad mini review by any chance? i imagine you'll like it probably more then this due to it's small size and usefulness but i would like to hear your thoughts. If your not no worries i'm sure there are 100's of reviews elsewhere.
Good stuff, an honest and well rounded review! I have been thinking about picking up a Nexus 7 myself, but wondered whether to wait out on rumours of the iPad mini. What are your thoughts on these rumours?
I noticed you were reading some comics on there, how does it stack up for those, I have been considering getting an e-reader but also want to be able to read my comics on it. This seems to be a great device for what I want it for.
Thanks for a well thought out and informative review. I have owned my Nexus for about five days now and find most of what you had to say to be accurate. Bottom line, it's a very well rounded device for an affordable price.
Thank you for your review Blunty, I found it very helpful on deciding whether to buy the Nexus 7 tablet as my first tablet device. I’ve just placed an order for one :-)
in all the reviews of nexus 7 i have heard that there is no support for flash whatsoever. but in your video i so that you were playing flash videos of your website inside chrome. so my question is; is it possible to play embedded flash videos in chrome in nexus 7 and if possible how do u do it? thanks in advance
I find it highly reassuring that you, who's opinions and reviews have influenced my product choice, were first skeptical and then completely turned around, and now love the device. That's very open minded, which basically every reviewer should be. Problem is, a lot of them are not. :)
@blunty3000 Hello Blunty, Do you have any info about the Nexus 7 32GB 4G? I am getting a N7 from B & H, i see that they have a 4G N7 for pre-order...??? How is your experience with the Wifi only/Tethered AP ? Would you wait for a 4G and pay the extra little amount?
Cheers for the review mate, I own an Ipad as well and I also found that I was increasingly using the Nexus for daily use and just normal computing tasks around the house. The size makes it great but then again as you said the size also makes the Ipad better for Video and Travel :)
This was a fantastic review! I've been wanting one of these for a while and now I'm sure I ill be pleased for my purchase. Getting the 32gb next week when it comes out :)
Blunty the Nexus 7 here in Australia is currently close to $320AU for the base model at most retailers. If I looked long enough I would almost certainly find a deal and wipe it down to $300 AU. That being said, is it really a "bargain" in Australia or do you believe the $99 savings is worth the trouble over purchasing a 16GB WiFi model iPad 2.
what are these scrolling bits in the Nexus homescreens? Is it a feature exclusively for Google plus and RUclips? How can I get them for my iPad? It looks useful to consume media without having to open an app. Is there an app like that on iPad or iPhone? Will Apple implement them like they did with Android's notification bar?
Hi. Do you have an opinion on Nexus7 vs. Kindle Fire HD? My son wants a tablet. I have Amazon Prime and the free books and Prime Videos are pushing me towards the Fire.
That's the best review ever !! .. I have just a couple of questions , first : i ordered a nexus7 from Google on 8th August and i wanna know when could i get it cause i cant wait to have it, second : does it ship with a pre-installed content or what?
It's nice to see a critic every once in a while, even if they criticise the things you like. Anyway, I live in Belgium and this one is still to come out, but I'm more excited about the Acer Iconia A111 and A 211. These are 7" and 10" (respectively) HSDPA+, microSD expandible "budget tablets", for almost the same price. I think they're only availible in Europe so far, because no US reviewer drooled over it yet. Anyway I hope you'll get to talk about them soon, until then I'll subscribe! =)
I enjoy the review, specially 'cause you don't praise the product as much as other vlogers. It's good for it's price range and maybe better than other rather expensive gadgets out there. Gotta say I follow your work for a long time, never expect you to say something good about an Android product. Nicely done. Don't mind some typo, english isn't my first language.
With the Google Nexus 7 is now available in a 32gb, do you think there is really anymore flaws besides no hdmi and possible screen lag issues or anything else you have mentioned in the video. I was also wondering if the Nexus 7 is useful when note taking with only having a 7 inch screen with a available android app . Anyone's responses would be very help and greatly appreciated :)
Nice review. I was feeling a bit apprehensive with the earlier part of the review since it was mostly negative (or I guess harsh is a better term), but your conclusion really brought it all together. Thanks for your thoughts Blunty. :D
mmm. I'd say its good for the money (as you said multiple times). I guess just like most things, you really do get what you pay for. However, i do like this size compared to the iPad, though obviously, the iPad will shit all over this (unrelated question, will you be doing some kind of review/video on the 3DSXL when it is finally released in Australia? I have been going through your other 3ds videos, and was just wondering if you would be making another for the new release?)
Have been going through so many reviews regarding the 'big three' tablets and this is the best I've consumed so far (especially appreciate the look through comics as I've wanted to know if its worth owning for that) Cheers.
Good-enough, got it. I think it will fit nicely with my intended use . Thank you for your review, it has helped me get a better view of the devices without the "ahh omg new thing!!" feeling. Very down to earth, thank you.
Do you think the 8gb version will be good enough. I love this tablet except for the fact that it doesn't have expandable storage which really worries me.
I've had one for a few months, same as new no problem. I do use my iPad more, but I also have a Samsung Slate running Windows 8 that has made both obsolete. I think of the iPad and Nexus 7 as reasonable placeholders until something truly usable with my everyday needs came along. After Effects, Photoshop for graphic design, video editing is now a take on the train / plane experience. Less wasted travelling hours - these new devices are all awesome anyway.
Very impartial review. The stutter so many reviewers have commented on,is probably a ram issue.Although it has 1gb of ram there are so many background services like google + etc, eating away at the memory.Mine currently has only 300mb free so i am constantly killing unwanted services to get the device running smoothly again.
Well done with review Blunty. Very honest. Keep true to your self and keep up with it. Really a shame that you can't review Samsung products anymore. I'm really a big fan of their products. Subbed :)
I have owned an ipad 1 for a couple of years now and Apple has stopped bothering to update it... Now instead of buying an iPad 3 i have got myself the Google Nexus 7 and hands down, i love it. It is much faster, much more responsive and has completely replaced my ipad that has failed to impress me due to it's components not catching up to hardware dependant games and apps (e.g. Infinity Blade, fruit ninja due to them crashing a lot). The N7 is by far the best IMHO, btw awesome video Blunty! :)
Great review. I'm going to look on your channel to see if you have an updated review for the 32GB Wifi and 32GB 3G versions. Yeah, I was surprised they came out with those so fast! Wait..maybe it's 4G... can't remember but I think it's with AT&T.
Did the problems charging stem from trying to use a lower powered plug? The Nexus 7 wants 2 amps. I tried it with the charger from my Touchpad (also 2 Amps) and it worked fine.
Reading is fine (though for long books, novels etc, I'd prefer an e-ink screen) and I prefer the iPad for comics (bigger screen + retina display = KillerAwesome crispy Comixology experience) ... but I have read a few comics on the Nexus 7 and it's... wait for it... Good-enough ;)

Thank you
its awesome how honest you review the Nexus 7 and just say what i think about all the other guys who reviewed it, without making the device worse...glad i found you :)
It has never crashed or hung at all, in fact, I've only rebooted it once since unpacking it (and that wasn't even because I "needed" to)
2 speakers does not automatically imply a stereo sound-stage.
Cheers.
I mentioned it in my unboxing... it's quite similar to stretched leather. Very pleasant really.
Great video. I have an iPad 3 and have been shopping around for a more portable tablet and I gave the Nexus 7 a whirl. I'm really impressed with it and your video did a fantastic job of covering the various plusses and minuses of the device. Going to follow your videos in the future.

just wanted to compliment you on your depth in all the reviews you do
I'd prefer an e-ink screen for novels & long reads etc, it's just easier on the eyes, but the N7 a perfectly acceptable reading experience for ebooks.
Great review. I'm sold. I'm buying this device (my first tablet) at $299 in Sweden. But with 32 GB. Most reviews seem "old enough" to not mention this alternative size.
Thank you Blunty.
Excellent, fair review as per usual. Yours are ALWAYS the most useful. Especially the camera kit reviews. Thanks.
You are one of the best reviewers that I've seen so far, really usefull and very entertaining review! Kudos!
Hey Blunty, what phone/tablet stand are you using in this review? I've been searching high and low for it to no avail. I like how it's very simple.
Thanks, also, about the apps, does the Nexus 7 have apps for bass, crossover songs, or to make your music sound better. I just found out about the Nexus 10, I'm thinking about getting that instead or the 8. What's your thoughts about them?
This was such a great review thank you so much for your "bluntness" about it ! Btw are you recording this with an e-pl 1? :)
Great review Blunty. Been dithering over this or...something else. This has won me over, the wife's getting an N7.
Very good review sir. I liked the info. Isn't there a 32g version now? Would you say it's definitely worth it over a Galaxy tab 7inch? I've seen it does have GPS so does that mean we could use this as a Google sat nav? (perhaps if we use wifi to plot the route first...)
I'm going hands-on with a 3DSXL tomorrow morning as a matter of fact. Look for the video coming soon ;)
Great review Blunty, why am I just finding out you were doing these as well? (I kinda thought you only did cameras). Well I will definitely be looking for more. Thanks.

It's a much closer call... but I think the iPad2 still has an edge in colour gamut.
Videos are always clean Blunty and stuffed full of information! Keep it up!

How was reading on the thing. I wish to use my future device for reading books and comics plus the general web surfing on the couch and such. But you say that the screen show text a bit jagget, have you read books on the device for longer periods of time and if so, how was it?

This is the best review I've seen yet. Subscribed.
Thanks Blunty, was just the typ of review I was looking for. Even got me thinking of getting one :)
Thanks for giving me an HONEST review. Can't find enough of those anymore.
I noticed you were reading some comics on there, how does it stack up for those, I have been considering getting an e-reader but also want to be able to read my comics on it. This seems to be a great device for what I want it for.
By far the best review i seen for anything. You really stress about the negative which is refreshing for a change.
I’ve just placed an order for one :-)

this is the best review for the nexus 7 ive seen so far. very thoroughly discussed i must add
Would you prefer the HTC sense overlay to Samsungs Touchwiz or just the raw Android experience?
How good is the music on the N7? Im thinking about getting the mini ipad but so many are pointing out how great the N7 is
I find it highly reassuring that you, who's opinions and reviews have influenced my product choice, were first skeptical and then completely turned around, and now love the device. That's very open minded, which basically every reviewer should be. Problem is, a lot of them are not. :)
@blunty3000
Hello Blunty, Do you have any info about the Nexus 7 32GB 4G?
I am getting a N7 from B & H, i see that they have a 4G N7 for pre-order...???
How is your experience with the Wifi only/Tethered AP ? Would you wait for a 4G and pay the extra little amount?
Cheers for the review mate, I own an Ipad as well and I also found that I was increasingly using the Nexus for daily use and just normal computing tasks around the house. The size makes it great but then again as you said the size also makes the Ipad better for Video and Travel :)

The best, fairest (sp) and truest reiview of all on the internet. Jolly good job.

Great review as always Bluntly :)

Have you had any wifi range issues or Bluetooth issues since android update blunty?
Best review I've seen yet for the Nexus. I think I'll stick with my Samsung 8.9 tablet and await the nexus 8! Thanks Blunty
It's nice to see a critic every once in a while, even if they criticise the things you like. Anyway, I live in Belgium and this one is still to come out, but I'm more excited about the Acer Iconia A111 and A 211. I think they're only availible in Europe so far, because no US reviewer drooled over it yet. Anyway I hope you'll get to talk about them soon, until then I'll subscribe! =)
hey blunty, would you recomend the nexus 7 over say a ps vita or 3ds just in terms of gaming?
Thanks for the in-depth analysis, Blunty, pity about the monaural output! Makes me want one, cheers!
You have a fantastic commentary voice btw. This was a very good review.
a bit of a random question, but what apps do you have on your android devices?
Great, honest and unbiased review. I liked your channel very much. Subscribed.
Top notch review. Honesty and clarity. Love it!... and I'm getting one!
dude... your voice alone just earned you another sub
With the Google Nexus 7 is now available in a 32gb, do you think there is really anymore flaws besides no hdmi and possible screen lag issues or anything else you have mentioned in the video. mmm. I'd say its good for the money (as you said multiple times).
I guess just like most things, you really do get what you pay for.
However, i do like this size compared to the iPad, though obviously, the iPad will shit all over this
(unrelated question, will you be doing some kind of review/video on the 3DSXL when it is finally released in Australia? I have been going through your other 3ds videos, and was just wondering if you would be making another for the new release?)
Have been going through so many reviews regarding the 'big three' tablets and this is the best I've consumed so far (especially appreciate the look through comics as I've wanted to know if its worth owning for that)
Cheers.
Very good, helpful review and a remarkably pleasant voice.
Thank you
And you think draining the battery on two devices to do one job is better... how?
I get what you mean about the screen being a bit blurry if you really look but isn't the PPI difference between the Nexus 7 and iPad about 20% in PPI?
did you order it directly from google? or somewhere like amazon?
I love your review & voice haha. You just gained another subscriber
I blunty nice review. You see the picture at 2.20 of the green iguana where can I find that picture?
Thanks
Good-enough, got it. I think it will fit nicely with my intended use . Thank you for your review, it has helped me get a better view of the devices without the "ahh omg new thing!!" feeling. Very down to earth, thank you.
Thank you for the review it was really nice , I have been looking for a review like this.
Cheers. Got yours yet? :)
Subbed :)
i love this review, and your voice. u don't sound boring. i want a nexus so bad. good review!
What's the holder you're using? Looks cool
Sir, i want your opinion. i want a tablet to use for web browsing , should i get nexus 7 or ipad 4?
Great review. I'm going to look on your channel to see if you have an updated review for the 32GB Wifi and 32GB 3G versions. Yeah, I was surprised they came out with those so fast! Wait..maybe it's 4G... can't remember but I think it's with AT&T.
Did the problems charging stem from trying to use a lower powered plug? The Nexus 7 wants 2 amps. I tried it with the charger from my Touchpad (also 2 Amps) and it worked fine.
Really good review! Well done, Sir.
Best review ever of any device. Honest and to the point. Thank you
Reading is fine (though for long books, novels etc, I'd prefer an e-ink screen) and I prefer the iPad for comics (bigger screen + retina display = KillerAwesome crispy Comixology experience) ... but I have read a few comics on the Nexus 7 and it's... wait for it... Good-enough ;)
