Swimmer's ear is an infection in the outer ear canal, the area that runs from your eardrum to the outside of your head. For those of you who are interested, its official term is otitis externa. It's often brought on by water that remains in your ear which then creates a moist environment for long enough to aid the growth of bacteria, which leads to an infection.
It is normally a result of bacteria, very rarely it can be brought on due to fungus or a virus. We’ll be looking at how to avoid swimmer's ear and in the worst case, if you do end up with symptoms, how best to treat them.

You forgot, that getting cold water into the ear canal can cause severe dizziness, especially in open water swimming, which can be prevented with swimming ear plugs.

Racing with earplugs helped my balance running out of the water to T1 as well as preventing nausea during the run (just remember to pull them out in T1....aero helmets make them impossible to remove during the bike if you forget). My favs are the "pine tree" shaped silicone one's from Mac's (in the US any Target, Wal*Mart, etc. has them for a few bucks).
Keeping cold water out of the ear canal will also help you feel warmer in cold water.

Great tips!! My top tip is to blow dry one’s ears after a swim. I got a severe ear infection and haven’t gotten any since. Just use a hair dryer on hot and fast, tug on outer ear to open ear canal, angle air in, and it’ll quickly dry up your ear canal. Someone asked, “won’t that affect your hearing?” I feel like it won’t, since some women blow dry their entire head of hair regularly, and I don’t. A 5 second blast of hot air to the ears has only helped me thus far!!

Once had sinus infection from poorly maintained pool. Had to stop swimming for 3 months to get rid of the infection 😢

I got a scary swimmers ear about 10 years ago that didn’t go away for 3 months. They gave me stronger antibiotics with higher dosage every 2 weeks and at some point they said I might have gotten one of the antibiotics resistant bacteria. At the end I was filling my ear with the antibiotics every morning and night until it was full. I was so scared.
Now, I’m religiously wearing good ear plugs to avoid anything similar again. Something small like this can end up being very serious. Thank you for the video!

I’m currently 3 weeks into an infection. 2nd dose of antibiotics. Nightmare. 3rd time in 10years. I do swim a lot though. I’m just preying it goes soon. I’ve been wearing ear plugs every time since last infection. Silicone ones that mould to your ear. Important to replace regularly and add to boiling water regularly to kill germs. Infections are debilitating. Really bad ear ache & I’m feverish and been off work for a week 😬

I have been using Speedo ear plugs for years with no infection so far. I wash and dry them after every session. I swim 3 times a week

I’m down and out with an ear swimming infection at the moment. Agony. On anti-biotics. 2nd dose 😬. Third time in 10years. Been off work for a week and got a fever. I use ear plugs all the time but if you swim a lot I think it’s an inevitability you’ll get one. I went to the doctors early but not early enough. Once it’s itchy pick up the phone. Don’t wait till hearing declines.

It's great you raised this, Heather. I suffered horrifically from swimmers' ear. I've been free of it for over a year now following a series of antibiotic eardrops and ultimately oral antibiotics. Doing this works for me and I'm posting in case it helps others: I never put anything in my ears other than ear plugs. I experimented with a range of different ear plugs before finding a good fit - they don't eradicate water ingress but they go a long way to limiting it. I always wear them in open water and mostly in the pool except for weekly squad sessions when I need to interact effectively. I ensure I make two consecutive days per week non-swimming. I soak the ear plugs in Steradent - once per week if swimming in chlorinated water and after each open water session. Best advice - persevere with ear pugs. Try different types until you find ones that work for you.

Way back when in Boy Scouts several of us got swimmers ear. Our Scout master at the time God Bless Him, used a concoction I've used and carry in my swim bag and have for over 40years.. Its a 50/50 mix of Distilled White Vinger/Isopropyl Alcohol. The ratio(%) of Iso Alcohol doesn't matter as long as its used. I have a small dropper bottle and one - two drops after every swim along with a gentle push with the outer ear(Tragus). Clears any water. Just be sure you tip your head to the side when using the solution. Flip to the other side, then flip back and done.. Takes less than 30 seconds.

#coachescorner I keep getting a cold every 5-6 weeks which disrupts my ironman training, do you have any advice on how to prevent this? I try not to over train and very gradually up my training but I'm still getting the reoccurring colds

figured applying some Vaseline on the outer of the ears helps to “slide off” water somehow

There a spray you can use called earol (contains tea tree oil) which repeals water and supposedly kills bacteria but I’ve found that earplug won’t stay in when you use it as they become slippery. Must always put earplugs in boiling water regularly too to kill
      Any germs built up.

Shaking my head doesn’t do it for me, I have to specifically jump on one leg while shaking my head in sync. Left leg for the left ear, right leg for right ear and all that 🤷‍♂️🙂

Are you Turkish per chance? I ask as that's very common to see here in Türkiye at the beach, but I have never seen it in any other country, unless the hopping individual was of Turkish origin :)

I can still remember the taste of the medicine as a child 🍌🤕
As an adult it has helped to make sure water doesn’t get in the ear canal during my daily shower (one finger on the tab of the ear canal while washing that side).
