    John admittedly says on the Rick Rubin podcast that he doesn't like his voice on these songs cause Jerrys voice is so different and he doesn't blame anyone for not liking it either.

    John sings the hell out of this song. I get watching a guy live your dream makes you a bit bitter but c'mon, John brought this band and its music to a whole new group of fans and kept the trip rolling. Your reaction makes me think of Uncle Rico watching Patrick Mahomes ball out lol.

      First off, it’s YOUR opinion that he sings the song well. I’m not a fan of it. Second, my dream is not to play with Dead and co, so there’s no bitterness. Third, I agree that he has brought the music to a new generation, which is great. And fourth, I bet I can throw that silver sky over that mountain.

    Lucky enough to have gotten the dead spec at retail. Thing plays unbelievably well. I get the built vs. bought argument, but this is a special guitar because 1. It’s limited to 1000 pieces and 2. It’s the exact guitar that Mayer used on tour. Can’t get the same magic and wow factor by just putting a blaster in an SE

    I'm just hear to say that I never saw Jerry or the Grateful Dead, but I have thankfully been given the opportunity to see members of that band, and I'm happy about that. I understand it isn't everyone's cup of tea, and that's also cool. The vulturing by PRS shouldn't fall on Mayer though. Opinions are like buttholes (everyone has one). You clearly do care though. You posted a video criticizing Mayer for his bluesy guitar playing and then completely contradict yourself by saying "I don't care though". Seems like a fake nonchalant attitude. Also, everyone has a unique voice, right? Jerry is unfortunately no longer a physical being on Earth and everyone else is kind of just trying their best. Also, it seems a tad disrespectful. I like the way you do it. I like the way Dead & Co. does it. I like the way DSO does it. But, no one does it like Jerry and Grateful Dead and that point has already been made ad nauseam. Don't become just another hater on youtube.

    • @TobyDavvy
      @TobyDavvy  6 месяцев назад +1

      I hear you, man. Not here to be a hater, but a reaction video is inherently an opinion piece, ya know? My attitude is neither fake nor nonchalant. I said I didn’t care after making a statement, because in the grand scheme, my opinion doesn’t matter. It’s up to personal taste. And Mayer absolutely had a hand in that PRS guitar. He is culpable.

    Just my 2 cents but the world gave us 1 Jerry and quite frankly, we dont deserve another and just because someone is carrying the torch, so to speak, mind you w/ the blessing of the remaining Dead, you cant expect to appreciate the things you love about Jerry in another human. In my humble opinion, it's unfair to Mayer and Dead and Co. and in some ways, slightly disrespectful to Jerry. He stands alone and I think remembering to appreciate that while these artists pay respect to his legend, is more important then being frustrated w/ how closely Mayer's sound compares to Jerry. Again, the universe gave us 1 Jerry Garcia and that's how it was meant to be.

    • @TobyDavvy
      @TobyDavvy  6 месяцев назад +2

      I think this is a fundamental misunderstanding. I’m not looking for Jerry when listening to Mayer. Independent of dead and co, I would and have felt the same way about JM. I’m not a fan of his voice. Regardless of what project he’s playing with. His guitar playing leans too bluesy for my taste. Again, regardless of project. This just comes down to personal taste. I’m all about people doing what they want to with the dead’s music and making it their own in a new form of expression. And furthermore, I’m an advocate for people liking what they like. So, if you like JM and dead and co, that’s awesome. Please listen to the music. Go see the music. This iteration just doesn’t do it for me.

      @@TobyDavvy thank you for the thoughtful response and one thing I'm a firm believer is that just like how beauty is in the eye of the beholder, music rings in every ear differently in that same fashion. I might hate what someone listens to but I respect the hell out of the fact they like it. I tend to agree w/ your overall opinion in regards to Mayer, not my taste and honestly, I dont listen to him or them at all. I listen to the Grateful Dead and maybe I did misunderstand you reaction but it seemed to be pinning them against each other, at least a lil bit. I've been fortunate, I have seen just about every iteration and while this one might not be my favorite, I do appreciate it and definitely can get down to it in the right mood. For what it's worth, I enjoyed this reaction thoroughly, and would be cool to see you do reactions to other iterations...personally, give me Jimmy Herring's guitar and I dont care who's singing! Man, you picked another show I was at. (I was at the Port Chester DSO show you reviewed earlier.) The first set had the last Crazy Fingers, but I have to admit that nothing really grabbed me. When John launched into this Sugaree, it really did roar up into the stands where we were located on the first base side. That was the only Dead & Co show I caught from this run and I’m convinced that Jay Lane made all the difference in the consistency of all those shows starting with the amazing Cornell kickoff. He just locked into Bobby and everyone else in ways that was not as consistent with Billy the previous year. I love Billy, but Dead & Co benefits from Jay.

    I appreciate that you were straight forward and came and out and stated that you do not like Mayer's voice and his guitar blues foundation of playing may or may not fit a specific song...that said, you are nit picking. We...or at least most of us all thought that he was NOT the guy for the slot he took. I believe we were all, mostly, proven wrong. Mayer played authentic music and it was in his own style...it wasn't DSO. They tried it with JK and Warren etc. I loved The Other Ones, The Dead, Furthur and so forth. Do you want a fake Jerry? I prefer someone who was given an opportunity and took it, outside of his comfort zone and didn't fake it. "Big Dick bull shit?! " Yo, that's who he is. And I'm not knocking JK...all I'm saying is that is that he, Mayer, was confident enough to take the music that came before him and make it his own. I believe there is something to be said about that. Just as Jerry took things from the bluegrass and folk before him. Imagine yourself being called up to play in Mayers band...how would that go? Are we emulating or appropriating? Or are we being ourselves and crushing it? "We" as in the proverbial...if you're not into the whole brevity thing. I think you just don't like Mayer and that is cool. Is this a weekday...what day is this?

    John does a great job of honoring Jerry in his playing of this song. I listened to a lot of D&C before I dug deep into the Dead. When I listened back to old shows I was blown away by how well John does to honor Jerry’s sound on this. I think I love the D&C version because John sings it in his own way, and I think he does an amazing job of that. This is how John Mayer sings blues songs, and I think his touch fits the feel of the song very, very well.

    This is one of my favorite channels, but I think I’ve got to stop watching the D&C reactions because I know what you’re gonna say and I’m gonna disagree all the way through - which is what’s great about everyone being allowed to have their own opinion. I do appreciate that you flag parts you DO like on occasion, but I do sometimes feel like it’s similar to when one of my kids says they don’t like dinner - they’ve made their mind up before they taste it and it feels like you’ve made your mind up before listening to the song. Oh well! Love everything else on here - especially the lessons and the history you give when teaching. Would’ve never found you without John though since he started me on my Dead journey.

A little phrasing, pause, and the most underrated musical note in music, the rest, is sometimes most appropriate. A little space between thoughts works... JM is also gonna sing to his ability, just like anyone would. Bob chose him for a reason. Reach. Like it or not, Mayer drew lots of folks into the music which benefits ANYONE making a living off this music. I'll wager at least 20% of your audience stems from people that came from DnC. In other words if that’s the main reason you don’t really fuck with the D&C vibe, then this is probably the worst song to go by. Dude... thank you SO much. You're a breath of psychological fresh air.
    The thing that folks don’t get is the Dead really mean something to a lot of people. Mayer just doesn't really fit. Why would he? It's not remotely his wheel house.
    Rock on. Stay honest and critical.

    I’m a fan of John Mayer, I’m essentially a blues guy but I hate Dead & company. Just doesn’t fit. I also think that two solo guitarists would help. Could you imagine Philip Sayce trading solos with Trey Anastasio over Sugeree… The Gods would weep…

    I’ve seen D&C *a lot*, which is whatever, but the thing I could never shake is that Mayer almost never had a memorable moment. There were a few - and I mean a couple of seconds - on the last 2 tours where he turned my head for a second, but I basically never said to myself, “Holy shit! That was epic; we are going to be listening to that for the next 20 years + wondering how he got there and did that!”. That’s a Jerry thing + handful of jazz musicians, and this band was a jazz band utilizing the rock idiom, more or less. (Though taking inspiration from many different musical languages).
    It’s absolutely foolish to compare them, so this is not Mayer specific, and at the same time, it’s specific to anybody who has ever endeavored to play the Jerry role in this music (only musically), but it always seemed as though he was saying something + it was memorable.
    I think you’re one of the best players of this music in the country, including Mayer, and that’s not bullshit. He thinks *way* too much, though I think it’s because he’s learning, which is dope, but it doesn’t translate live. He has no story to tell + he’s not a psychedelic person, and that makes a difference, where the non-psychedelic people get it (or like it) or not.
    I really like your playing, and there’s nothing wrong with this, but I do think you tend to fill the spaces you’re given with too many notes. That may be because you’re naturally better than the people you play with or something, but it can be too much.
    Other than Kimock - who we all know Jerry said was the next in line, for whatever’s that worth - the dude who plays the Jerry role in DeadEye from Austin gets it the most. He’s smart, thoughtful, patient, and can absolutely rip, and it’s a crime that he or Kimock aren’t Mayer.
    I don’t really care that Mayer went to a prestigious musical school, or that he had some kind of revelation in the last 10 years listening to what is probably the best “Althea” (5/16/80, Nassau); Bobby wanted to do the thing, and he found somebody competent to do it, not necessarily somebody who had the right vibe. He’s way too removed from the general public to be able to access the kind of people who could really do it.
    And there’s a deeper thing there, right? Bobby’s literal social exposure at this point is these cracker-ass blues-based dudes who are pretty famous; he doesn’t have much else, so the music will suffer from his inability to actually dig into who the real people are that carrying the music forward. Mayer ain’t that dude, but Rick Rubin’s poser ass can introduce them, and there you go. They live in a diff world + they’re all *way* outta touch. No judgement, just is what it is in this day and age.
    Who knows: we all have our stupid take on this amorphous thing, but I think you’re way up there *WAY* up there, but you need to stop playing so many goddamn notes.

    I only saw one live GD show in 95. Jerry's voice was terrible. Doesn't mean I didn't have a great time. I've seen Dead & Company three times now and John did a much better job on the vocals than Jerry did that at that one particularly show. but give me Jerry in his prime any day.

    You’re 100% right Davvy about John’s voice. It bothers me too. I mean he does have a classically better voice than yours but the way he uses it is just annoying. Too much airiness to it. Breathy. And overdoing it. But I got to say as someone who didn’t like his guitar either for a loooong time I think in the past two years I enjoy his guitar player finally and think it finally sounds good. I think he takes more risk and goes after it. While before he played it safe. I’m surprised how many like his voice. I thought it was actually a pretty common opinion. But I guess not. Voices are a tricky thing. Like Brent. So many people don’t like his voice at all. I don’t love it but I can enjoy it in different songs. And love his playing a ton.

    Now his handler's have finagled his words ( that someone else wrote) to be the forward in the unrealesd Robert Hunter material?!?!? That would be like Justin Bieber writing the forward for unreleased James Joyce Material....
    I guess I'm bitter, old, and spun....but I just feel pissed on by Mayers involvement....he's blatantly only a part of it for strategic demographics, Custies have always had the money! Sometimes Custies (rarely) become FAMILY

    Howdy Daavy, I’m another fan of you and your work. A couple of considerations, one is to ease up on the hate speech. I’m not a Mayer fan, nor Clapton, and a few dozen other players that fill stadiums, but hey, words matter. We can not vibe with their thing and we can do it in a way that allows room for all that music.
    The second consideration is for you to react to some or all of the three sets that Zero played in Santa Cruz 8/9/95. Just days after Jerry died. Steve takes a moment in set two before playing Afro Blue to share and express his feelings.
    The show is stunning. Jerry called Steve his favorite undiscovered guitar player. It’s high time you discovered him too!
    Fun fact, lyrics by Robt. Hunter whose nephew is singing. Martin Fierro on sax will sound familiar to Legion of Mary fans.

      I don’t believe anything I said could be considered hate speech. That’s a pretty extreme jump from me saying I’m not a fan of his voice, or his blues licks, or certain embellishments that other musicians do as well. I’m entitled to my opinion. Just as you are. Just because I give my opinion doesn’t mean I’m stating it as fact. It’s subjective. And I’m well aware of Kimock, but I appreciate your input.

    I just watched you “let’s read comments video” and decided to check out what caused all the fuss in your comments. Is it possible that you are misconstruing the “big dick blues man” guitar adjusting based on your preconceived notions about Mayer? What I see when he does that is not someone flexing on the music like “look how good I am”, but someone who is moved by the music and excited. Maybe I’m a Mayer apologist, or maybe I’m someone who has experienced similar emotions while playing my guitar and feeling moved. Your view seems very cynical toward John as if he’s m*lesting the music for his own gratification. He’s a fan of the music and if he feels moved by it why should we judge or attempt to construct a motive without knowing him? Why not approach it with an open mind and the benefit of the doubt?
