      There are so many books eligible for this prize once you start digging, you soon realise just how many books are out there.

  • @scallydandlingaboutthebook2711

    Great selection. I have only read a couple. Couldn't resist a book from Burkina Faso of course and it's a good one.

    the international booker is always a prize that only nominates fascinating things...absolutely cannot wait for the longlist! most of your predictions sound sooo good!!!!!!!
    i am ashamed of not having read my share of night yet being a spanish speaker but he's chucky
    the queen's of sacramento park and its author in general are a big thing in spanish speaking countries at the moment, everyone has been raving a lot about that book since it came out so i wouldn't be surprised to see it

    Yours is the first prediction video I have seen. Thank you for going early, and for highlighting books that if they take our fancy we can potentially aquire/place library holds/read before the longlist announcement. It has enabled us to join in the prediction fun with you. Not read any on your list, but am tempted by All Our Children Scattered which comes out in the UK later this month.

    • @GunpowderFictionPlot
      @GunpowderFictionPlot  Год назад +1

      I always try to read books that excite me for a prize before the Longlist is announced, when there's a book you want to read and it doesn't make the Longlist it's frustrating as you have to wait... So I'm glad to have enabled you to do the same. 🙂

  • @ReadBecca

    I am so hyped about prize season this year! Of course I will almost inevitably read none of the books 😃youve at least put a bunch on my radar I didn't know of before, to probably not pick up in a timely fashion.

    • @GunpowderFictionPlot
      @GunpowderFictionPlot  Год назад

      It's so rewarding to do the research for this video, it's so hard to narrow it down to a longlist... Very excited to see what the judges like.

  • @BandysBooks

    Great video! I can’t even pretend like I’ve read, let alone heard of the majority of these books. Just means that I need to do a better job of being aware of international publications. Looking forward to seeing how your predictions turn out.

    • @GunpowderFictionPlot
      @GunpowderFictionPlot  Год назад +1

      I hadn't heard of most of these until I researched, I think that's the point of these prizes to give us readers an avenue to learn about translated fiction.

  • @LouiseReader

    • @GunpowderFictionPlot
      @GunpowderFictionPlot  Год назад

      Yes, exactly. I wanted to highlight interesting novels as much as predict the Longlist... Because let's face it, I'm probably only getting 2-3 right regardless, those judges are sneaksy.

  • @CharlieBrookReads

    These all sound really good. I sometimes pick up a few of the international books later on so hopefully I will get round to a few of these soon. Either ways it’s always great to hear about some new stories and add them to my Wishlist so thank youhooo!! 😊

    • @GunpowderFictionPlot

    Love the "shock" for Han Kang. BookTubers with special effects, so great. Also love the list. So many books to look out for. I never paid too much attention to this prize before I read translated fiction for the BookTube prize, now I am so intriguided by so many of these books. Thanks for the flags, it makes it so easy to see the countries these books originated.

    I want to see _Strega_ (Lykke Holm/Vogel) on the longlist: quiet, mysterious, gothic, painterly. I also struggle with sourcing translated works, so I live vicariously through others for the Booker International experience.
    I’m looking forward to Kang’s book too! ⭐️

    • @GunpowderFictionPlot
      @GunpowderFictionPlot  Год назад +1

      I don't think I picked a Scandinavian author, I think that might be an over sight and I can see with the right judges there's a few gothic horror novels getting rave reviews, you might be right.
      I just finished an ARC of Greek Lessons... It didn't live up to my expectations. :( Hopefully this will be one we disagree on and you enjoy it.

    This list is🔥Adding way too many to my reading list. Tell Me About It sounds fantastic...a novel that takes place mostly over a single phone call...umm yes! I have a copy of Our Share of the Night, I just need a good chunk of time to dedicate to it. Thanks for putting this great video together.

    • @GunpowderFictionPlot
      @GunpowderFictionPlot  Год назад +1

      The Italian title of Tell Me About It is just Nives, the protagonists name, so it's clearly a character portrait, which makes me think it's even more of a you book.
      I hope to read Our Share of Night before the longlist is announced. It sounds brilliant, too many amazing reviews for it not to be a good read.

    I have seen our share of night everywhere and also that everyone is loving it so that is a solid prediction! I want to read something of hers but will probably start with the shorter dangers of smoking in bed. Wouldn't be surprised if han kang greek lessons is on there. Ooh tan twan eng is judging!! Good to see. Punishment sounds interesting... and like my kind of read - crime and punishment style and concepts. Wouldn't be surprised if a tilted axis or europa editions title turns up on the list. The lost spell is giving me metamorphosis vibes and thats all I need to be interested!!

    • @GunpowderFictionPlot
      @GunpowderFictionPlot  Год назад

      I was going to read The Dangers of Smoking in Bed first too, but it's short stories and I often think authors can struggle with short stories and make amazing novels and vice versa.
      I didn't look at it by publisher, that's awesome, A Titled Axis won last year too.
      Punishment could be incredible!
      Ahh, we have such different opinions on Kafka.

    This is one of my favorite prizes because I always discover a new to me author. Our Share of Night was incredible. I live in the US, but I pre-ordered it from Blackwell's, so I got it in October. This book is living and breathing inside me. Truly magnificent. I've never heard of Max Lobe, so I intend to look him up.

    The international booker is my favorite of the prizes, I’m not a “read the whole long/shortlist” person, but I use it to get recommendations. Some of my favorites of the last year were from this prize (Cursed Bunny by Bora Chung comes to mind), and since I’m in the US there is often a big delay in the books becoming available, so I get a lot of anticipation. (Last year’s winner Tomb of Sand was just published last week and I have been holding myself back from running to the bookstore…. I know I will love it but don’t want to buy a 600-page hardback)

    • @bookladyreads
      @bookladyreads Год назад +1

      Cursed Bunny was a really fantastic set of short stories. I enjoyed them a great deal.

    • @GunpowderFictionPlot
      @GunpowderFictionPlot  Год назад

      It sucks that Tomb of Sand has taken so long to get to you; it's a little weird too, you would think once it landed in the Longlist they'd release it ASAP, little lone once it wins the whole thing!
      I'm sure you know, but Blackwell's does free international shipping, so you can always get UK released books... But I'm not sure what they charge in the US per book.

    Also the Stella longlist on 2 March. Too hectic! My priority will be the Womens Prize but after that, we'll see how it goes and what is available here. Oh and judging a Booktube round !!!

    • @GunpowderFictionPlot
      @GunpowderFictionPlot  Год назад

      I plan to follow the Stella, but maybe not read every book, just what interests me or maybe give myself longer to get to everything... Definately book prize season contributed to me not reading the Booktube Prize.

  • @DuaneJasper

    This prize still doesn't seem to garner as much gravitas as it deserves. I have never read any entire Booker shortlist but I would say there's a high chance some of the International shortlists are superior to the Bookers. I mean, were any of the eng Bookers really 5 star reads this year? I didn't think so

    • @GunpowderFictionPlot
      @GunpowderFictionPlot  Год назад +1

      I think that this prize suffers from a number of other big name prizes including the women's prize having a similar schedule. I don't think that benefits either prizes or us readers.
      I quite liked The Bee Sting and How to Build a Boat on this year's Booker, they're both 5 star reads for me - but I take your point, this prize deserves more love and attention.

  • @bouquinsbooks

    Your list is interesting. 🤔 Too many short books. There will be at leat two “normal” length books (i.e. 300 to 450 pages).
    “Nonfiction novel” is a word combination I hope will never become popular. I am tired of writers who are too lazy to create fictional stories and characters or too lazy to do real research for a nonfiction book. It’s the worst of both genres. 😔

    • @GunpowderFictionPlot
      @GunpowderFictionPlot  Год назад

      I didn't intentional excluded medium length books, I just didn't check for it until organising things.
      I think nonfiction novels can be fantastic, sometimes the information is just not there. To be honest I don't see how it's too different to a novel like Glory.
