A great look at the history of VR! People always claim that because the concept of VR has been around so long, that it's like 3D movies, something that comes around every so often, fails, and comes back later again. This misses that the early VR were either experimental prototypes or commercial-only products. Just like with video games, it was never going to take off until it could be enjoyed at home. And we only got this for the first time in 2016.
Yes, there's the Virtual Boy, but as someone who has one of these, it's really more of a primitive 3DS than a VR headset. For starters, the "3D" is simply layered 2D sprites, so about the most realistic game you could make would be a DOOM clone. And forget being above to move and tilt the game view by naturally moving and tilting your actual head. Not only can the console not be worn, but it has no ability to track the user and there's no way the system would be able to produce a convincing simulation of this movement in the first place.

Thank you for the kind comment!
Did you try any of the new VR headsets? how do you think they stack up against the Virtual Boy? I own an Oculus Quest 3 and I love everything about it.

@@KosharySenpai I've had many VR headsets over the years. I started with a Vive, but I've also had a Vive Pro, Pimax 5K, Valve Index, Quest 2 and now a Quest 3. Anyone one of these is MILES above the Virtual Boy, that it's not even funny! As I alluded to previously, the Virtual Boy is really more of a 3D HMD, a bit like the one Sony put out around 10 years ago for watching 3D movies. It's impressive for it's time, but calling it a "VR headset" is a bit generous.

@@fireaza oh wow, I wish I could try the older VR headsets.
I always heard that VR is one those products that you "have to try it to understand what it's about", and I immediately agreed with that statement once I actually got a headset. Half-life Alyx and Batman Arkham Shadow were both mind blowing.

@@KosharySenpai The Vive was good for it's time, but the low resolution made text all but impossible to read. Anything from the Quest 2 on is much improved.
You're not wrong about needing to get hands-on to "get it". If you've only seen gameplay videos, you'd assume that VR is simply a 3D monitor strapped to your face with Wiimote waggle. You'd obviously wonder what the big deal is, since we've seen those things before.
