The tories and Murdoch are sadly on the same wavelength when it comes to TV broadcasting. Neither of them like the idea of non subscription TV, so are desperate to abolish it ASAP. Abolishing the licence fee is obviously the way for that to happen.
They don't care if the majority of the Uk population can't afford to pay for expensive subscription TV.

I am approaching 79 years years of age and live alone. During lockdown I was encouraged to buy a TV licence (having had free access to all channels for over 2 years). I rarely watch TV because I prefer to be ‘out and about’ and NEVER watch BBC programmes because they do not interest to me. I have not renewed my licence because my viewing time is rare but last year I would occasionally tune into ‘Freeview Channels’. I believe that it is criminal for the BBC to overthrow a decision made by our own Parliament almost 2 decades ago and cannot understand why our current Government have endorsed such action. Robbery is a crime and treated as such.

I'm not sure the BBC should be the subject of your ire here. The introduction of free licences was a purely government policy when Labour were in power, and the cost to the BBC was subsidised by the taxpayer. The Tories for whatever reason decided to push the cost of free licences onto the BBC, who had no part in the introduction thereof. In the general scheme of public spending the cost of subsidising free licences was a drop in the ocean, so really the government of the day should be the ones you blame.
In this it's not unlike the current obsession with modish green policies, where the government will decide that your ICE car is bad, and must be replaced by an electric one, and your gas boiler is evil and must replaced by very costly heat pumps. At your expense of course, despite the decision being taken out of your hands.

Due to the area I live in most of these channels don't show up on freeview anyway. Still quite shocking that they are removing all but the standard 5 channels having HD. Most people with just freeview don't have HD TV's because they can't afford it. You can't watch HD channels on an old SD TV. It doesn't get shown in SD instead of HD on the same channel.

    ... Will horrify them.
As an outdated "legacy" broadcaster, there's no room for the BBCs "general entertainment" format - unchanged since the 60s and 70s, there's no place for them in the world of streaming. Ultimately, the BBC will have to admit that people don't *need* all the rubbish they broadcast, but some people might *want* individual programmes or series.

Sounds a bit fishy. Not sure how they can just say “sorry, we sold the frequencies so the channels are gone” rather than having to make tweaks to their system to put the affected channels in a different place. It’s not the sale I mind, it’s the lack of a fix to maintain service.
It doesn’t affect me as I don’t watch broadcast tv, but it sounds really odd.

    • @Robutube1
      @Robutube1 2 года назад +1

Agreed. I wonder what the real end point is in the mind of those sanctioning these decisions? The default position of the current administration is to minimise/eradicate state funded services of course, so I guess they want pay-per-view or subscription models to replace them. These one-off sales of state owned assets rarely end well in the long run.

    • @ShanghaiRooster

@@ShanghaiRooster Good suggestion, but I note your caveat too.

    • @thebaldconvict

There is only so much bandwidth for each multiplex available, to squeeze more channels in you have to reduce the quality (or use a better codec such as H265).
To use a different codec they would have to switch out Freeview boxes like they did when Freeview HD came along using H264. That is why older boxes cannot play the HD channels.
Besides, compare the picture quality of a lot of the Freeview channels to their Freesat counterparts, would you put up with them even worse? I wouldn't.
That and the multiplex they are getting rid of is a temporary one that they have been transmitting this TV on while getting ready for the 5G sale. The public were never destined to keep it.

Interesting. My other half lives in the South Hams and the Over-the-Air TV can sometimes be sporadic, depending on weather conditions. She can access the live BBC channels over Iplayer (ie internet) so this is the only option she has for watching BBC HD.
You can get some programmes over Iplayer in UHD which is good, and I think this maybe the only option for freeview UHD. Not sure this would work over the standard aerial (it's different for satellite users).
I have noticed that BBC4 HD is on a multiplex frequency which is close to the band allocated for future 5G. I bought a loft aerial recently which has a filter to filter out the phone frequencies. It couldn't get BBC 4 HD so I figured it was just a matter of time.
Once everything is streaming over the 'net, then we could be heading for pay-per-view for prime content.

The assumption that everyone is on-line (or wants to be) is erroneous.
For example, those who use a trusty CRT TV with a Freeview digibox (that probably encompasses a lot of elderly people) will suffer. Maybe they can't afford whizzy Smart TVs (with a likely shorter shelf life) or an Internet connection, and replacing otherwise functional kit is wasteful. True, the excised channels may be primarily HD, but it could be the thin end of the wedge.

    • @ianyorke2617

If they have a CRT and digibox then they would be much better off getting a new TV eg SAMSUNG UE32T4300AKXXU 32" Smart HD Ready HDR LED TV @ £179. It would pay for itself in reduced electricity consumption 😃

The problem is, mobile phone networks can easily outbid all the television and radio broadcasters for UHF and VHF frequencies. At that point pretty much everything will be online only because the low frequency analogue radio services won't be financially viable to keep running and the only thing running free-to-air will be shortwave broadcasts from countries that wish to evade censorship online and via satellite and push their ideology into foreign countries where they wish to change minds.

I'm awaiting confirmation but Freeview HD is no longer being used as a brand as of this year, PSB3 which hosts the main five HD channels has not had its licence renewed unlike the other multiplexes because of uncertainty about the future of HD broadcasting on digital terrestrial television and unlike the main SD channels, the HD channels are not protected by Ofcom at a time when the BBC is looking for cuts to its budget. Closing PSB3 alongside COM7's closure must be a tempting option for the BBC.
Freeview could become a SD only platform come July. Maybe HD channels only available via streaming on TV's and set-top-boxes or people will be told to go to Freesat and cable if they want HD.

In my opinion, the whole HD vs SD TV business model is so 2007. When will companies and channels simply make 720p or 1080p HD the new standard? Nearly a third of households in the U.K. use satellite services or high-speed fibre broadband as it's becoming far more affordable and reliable nowadays. Nearly everyone has 16:9 HD TV's anyway! Make HD the new default and find a new TV business model in which to make money.

Freesat has HD the BBC want people to forget about satellite services, because they know that terrestrial television is a waste of bandwidth, it's already time to end the BBC and broadcast television. I don't watch any including catch up services.
It's time to scrap broadcast television it's not necessary and it's a waste of energy, programs can be distributed by satellite a free satellite box when you can't afford the BBC licence, satellite will be extinct when everybody can stream.
All soapy was time for you to ask this after you need a TV licence probably not watching live broadcast television, anyway.
