Why You Probably Don’t Remember Friday Night NickToons

- Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon have always been seen as competitors to one another, and never was that truer than in the 2000s. One claimed to have Cartoon Cartoons, another claimed they were Not Just Cartoons! Who won the battle? Both in a way. Nick has always had better ratings, but Cartoon Network has generally been better recieved in terms of quality and quantity, and how Nick treated their Friday night block from 2002-2004 is the biggest example of this.
Coincidentally, I just remembered the Friday Night Nicktoons block existed not too long ago. You did a great job going over the history of the block, and the comparisons you made to the Cartoon Network Friday Night block showing how the Nick block didn't have as much to offer as the Cartoon Network Block did. That really put into perspective why Nick's Friday Night block isn't as well remembered as Cartoon Cartoon Fridays. Great video! 👍
You know, I'm so glad I wasn't alone re: the Friday Night Nicktoons intro being way better than the CCF intro, at least the original 2000 version. And yes I know this sounds like sacrilege considering what my profile picture is designed off of. Out of all the attempts to brand the Friday night block, Totally Twisted Telly was my favorite attempt and I could see them using it to maintain airings of both brand new Nicktoons and older fan favorites (I suspect that was why KaBlam! aired there for a while), though I get *why* it didn't work.
Something that wasn't touched on in this video is that in a weird way, CN kinda did the opposite of this whole thing about a year later where they took inspiration from one of Nick's ideas. The CN Fridays host segments were basically their answer to the U-Pick Live segments Nick was doing at the time, albeit only on a weekly basis and between proper new episodes rather than reruns. Then again, you could argue that U-Pick was itself an evolution of the ".com Pick" that CN engineered, which had probably been done before but who knows?
As a kid growing up in the '00s, i was very fond of the Friday night cartoon blocks. Since i was a big fan of SpongeBob, Fairly OddParents, and Jimmy Neutron (the holy trinity of early '00s Nicktoons), i ended up tuning into Friday Night Nicktoons over Cartoon Cartoon Fridays. Really wish they kept the studio branding going for longer, but perhaps they didn't want to keep showing bumpers that contained a bunch of canceled shows.
BTW, there's a variant of the intro that replaces Zim with Jenny that i think is still lost media.
(Also, does anyone remember Friday Night Slimetime? That was dope!)
I remember watching both blocks on Friday (switching channels) but Cartoon Cartoon Fridays held more of my main interest back in the day because of the cartoons interacting and later, Tommy and Zniga/Tara hosting on a live-action set. No one mentioned that Cartoon Network also rarely reran new content at first. I would have had to tune in for its premiere, remembered this for Class of 3000, Foster’s, Camp Lazlo, and Chowder. They wouldn’t be reran often until a few months or a year. Nicktoons see definitely aired a lot on Nickelodeon, notably Spongebob increased airings the more other Nicktoons were canned or sent to Nicktoons.
Part of the problem may be how much Nickelodeon has switched around their time slots for animation premieres. Weeks of premieres (4-5 days a week), Friday nights, Saturday mornings, even Sunday nights... it's been all over the place for years now
Wait i thought people at least remembered the Friday Night Nicktoons intro…
The intro got popular on RUclips, due to nostalgia. Not from the network.
I was a kid watching it at the time and I remember it fondly (though that may be because I was a sucker for SpongeBob, FOP, and Jimmy Neutron).
I was, too, but the only 2 things that bug me when I was a kid is that it ended in 2004😢 and they were no nicktoon hosts!
Never heard of it
Did you know Nick was also originally going to have a block like Toonami? And that's why Invader Zim was even greenlighted in the first place
I guess the reason it got canned was due to the 9/11 attacks happening around that time. Same for why the first season of Teenage Robot was produced in '02 but didn't air until a year after.
They kinda did with their short-lived SLAM! block.
I noticed Rockos Modern Life in the background and that show was off the air completely
Same here.
When I saw the name of this video I thought "I remember Friday night nicktoons! It was where they aired new episodes of there shows! I loved it! not as much as cartoon cartoon fridays, but I loved it!" but as you discussed it more and talked about the shows that where airing, I remember now that the only thing I really liked about it was the new Spongbob episodes it aired and Jimmy Neutron. Jimmy Neutron specifically was and possibly still is my favorite nicktoon made, and it was my favorite show on TV back when it aired. Even up to season 3 when it got cancelled I think it was really great. I remember absolutely loving the movie as a Kid and getting so excited when I saw a TV show coming out, So like I think the excitement I got from seeing that show air for on the block is what really kept it in my memory for as long as it did. Combine that with some of my all time favorite spongebob episodes also airing during this block and it really made it stand out for me. That being said, I would only ever watch it if it was airing an episode of a show I was really interested in, and even then I would only do that if it was a show I was more interested in thant whatever Cartoon network was playing at that time. The more I think about it, the more I realized I had a schedule as a kid lol. I knew whenever each network would air the premier on friday and when they would play the re-run on saturday, so I would just kind of pick and choose witch one was more important and watch that one as it aired.
I rarely ever got to watch the Friday Night Nicktoons block because of my parents always sending me to bed or taking over the tv when it starts.
It's probably due to the lack of host introduction. Maybe that's the reason why it didn't last long.
But at least it did pretty well, though not as successful as Cartoon Cartoon Fridays.
I had no idea it only lasyed such a short time. It made duch an impact on my Friday nights. I absolutely adored it.
I remember the 2002 rebrand of Friday Night Nicktoons when I was 8!
same, but it broke normal fridays with Jimmy Neutron in place of Zim.
Yeah I remember Friday night nicktoons. Mostly when I was introduced fairly odd parents. Lol. I didn't know it ended that fast though
I remember watching Friday night Nicktoons with my siblings.
8:03. It's a missed opportunity to have The X's, Catscratch, and especially Avatar air on Friday Night Nicktoons also. Like, Slime Time is fine, but it would've been cool if these three were also Friday Night Nicktoons as well.
They did air on Nick Friday Nights, which was the last attempted rebranding of the block before they gave up completely in late 2006 (I believe CN gave up around the same time too)
@@SpongeSebastianit came back in late 2015 and early 2016 but ratings were so bad, they got rid of it
I remember Friday Night Nicktoons easily
I remember when I was 8, every Friday I would be torn on whether to watch Friday Night Nicktoons or WWE Smackdown
3:21 Using a Band Geeks clip had to be intentional, right? Because it aired September 7, 2001, which means week 2 was September 14, 2001, the explicit night overshadowed by 9/11!
Yep. I made sure most of the clips I showed were from episodes that aired on the discussed blocks. Nice catch.
Also, in the episode, they had four days to practice...
Heck i remember the block "U-pick with stick stickly "
Correction Nickelodeon was NOT bigger then Cartoon Network from the late 90s to 2005. Cartoon Network literally beat the Super Bowl that’s how crazy big it was. They even had promos like “61 million fans” for DBZ ratings brag. Look up DBZ 61 million fans. It was more popular then nick and Disney combined.
I definitely dont remember any weekend blocks other than Snick, looks like I was too old for the others
1:13. Spongebob and Nick's first Saturday Morning Cartoon, for some reason, doesn't float well with me (lol). And I think that's another problem with Nickelodeon. Despite creating more iconic shows, their branding is nowhere near as memorable as other networks/companies, such as Cartoon Network, Disney, and Warner Bros. It's saying a lot when the best way to categorize the Nicktoons into sections is whoever's running the network at the time. Like Hey Arnold and Spongebob being Herb Scannell Nicktoons while Ren and Stimpy and Doug being Leybourne era Nicktoons for instance.
I remember being like 7 or 8 in pjs watching all that the Amanda show chalk zone Saturday night from 8 to 10 then nick @ nite started with cheers and I would turn to toon Disney or Cartoon Network
There was that SpongeBob nicktoons summer splats.
Bro, I forgot this block even existed. I never watched it and neither did anyone at my school. If you were cool, you were watching Cartoon Cartoon Fridays. Better intro, better branding and proper hype.
Weird I had no idea Nick also tried the CCF formula. Here in Latin America didn't exist at all. The closest thing we had was a block called "Nickmix" (With a Lego-like branding)
Also. Nick leading all the time? Taht's weird news to hear xD During that time nobody even tried to compete Cartoon Network, and Disney Channel was just non-existent (It was a Premium Channel for some reason), Nick fought for the second place against the Fox Kids Channel until mid-to-end 2000's... Until Disney Channel became a Free channel and the rest of the story is predictable.
I'm guessing if it had hosting segments like ccf did it would be as remembered ccf
Not really.
I remembered both.
I remember Friday nights Nicktoons
I don’t think I witnessed this 😅
20.9.23
I remember both
nicktoons network started in april 2005.
Sorry nickelodeon fridays belong to cartoon network
I remember
Hello I have Subscribe to your RUclips channel
The Equestria Girls reviews been pretty underwhealming especially with constantly bashing those first two and licking Josh Haber's boots, like giraffs their feeding hand! Zion kraze?
Is it bad to like Josh Haber episodes?
