About 30 years ago, there was a massive thunderstorm over North shields (where I lived, NE England), me and the girlfriend went down to the beech, to have a giggle on the sands amongst the thunder and lightning and rain. There were huge scorch marks on the sand, presumably from lightning. We saw a small boat out on the sea, but guessed the owner must be okay.
Next day we found out he had been hit by lightning and killed. Consider the rain, even if the boat is made of insulating material, its all drenched at that point.
    So, yes.

Insulation has its limits too. Air insulates, but you still get arcs from mere static electricity. Electrical tape insulates to, what?, 70kV and it is designed to do so. Lightning is 10-100 MV and boats are fairly thin material and not meant for that.
I'm not even sure the lightning has to hit a person in order to stop their heart. The electric field must change pretty quickly, right?, so wouldn't that cause an EMP?

@@blechtic I think modern boats (especially cruise and cargo boats) use a "lightning conductor" to pass the charge through the metal body and into the water, grounding it harmlessly away from the passengers.

    • @blechtic
      @blechtic 10 месяцев назад

@@prabhatsourya3883 Well, of course, actual ships have a lightning rod of some kind, or tolerance to lightning strikes, but mere boats? Yachts: yes, medium-sized sailing boats: probably, but smaller boats: likely not.
I wonder what kind of cost is involved, because a lighting passing through those things should leave both the rod and the boat intact. The ionisation of air means a lighting is more likely to strike that spot again and neither the rod or the boat around it should melt or burn if they get hit. I also wonder what is the minimum size that they can still attract the lighting enough to protect from it.

In lightning a metal boat is the safest option, get inside and the boat acts as a Faraday cage and even a direct strike will pass you by, the same as happens in an metal airplane. Do not fly in a storm in a plastic plane (if there is such a thing) unless you are wearing a full chain mail suit.

3:22 We were cutting down a tree with my dad and it fell onto powerlines
I asked him the same thing
The wood isn't conductive, but water is. Wood can get wet and soak up that water.
Also electricity is interesting, with enough energy basically everything is conductive.
That's why they tell us to stay away from power lines, they are isolated, but with the high current you can't be entirely sure.

Lightning strikes are infinitely less dangerous on ships at sea, as the entire surrounding water functions as a "grounding" wire. The only danger is a direct strike, such as on wooden ships with tall masts
Or large vessels with tall superstructure

I love that you are watching these Connor. But sadly, you are missing out on all of the comedy. The reason being, is that you keep pausing it just at the comedy moments, and then starting it again so that you don't know why it's funny - just to ask a 9 questions on what's going on because you don't understand the context of the scenes, what would happen if you got struck by lightning on water, etc.
Try to watch them seamlessly if you can. Then you'll find the comedy.

So damn sad that I will never see new specials from them again, but it's understandable since both Jeremy and James are over 60 and Richard is still 38 due to the brain damage he got. There are few things better than going through their specials, races, cheap car challenges etc.
They all also have their own shows from over the years. I would recommend becoming a 🏴‍☠ of t he bay just to see the whole journey unfold.
