- I combined my visit to the Missenden Valley with a visit to Small Dean Viaduct which I had been to a couple of days before. I was invited to watch the launch of this huge structure as it passed over the A413 and Chiltern railway line. In this video, I look at the section of HS2 between the North Portal at South Heath to Wendover.

A very interesting section covering many miles. Thanks. A beautiful clear sky. That large newly rolled expanse at 2:55 is interesting, quite far from the trackbed in the distance, with what looks like quite extensive planting in between. Some constructive feedback Karl.. I don't think you need to narrate the reference number of the footbridges etc. if it is labelled on screen with the drawing reference. We have been spoiled with two HS2 videos from you in 3 days.
Once again, so informative. Thanks Karl!
Thanks very much. Your video of the A413, the ribbon development housing, the traffic noise, the overhead pylons, etc, appear to me far more objectionable in the countryside than what HS2 will impact in this area. And that's even before they do the clean up and planting.
@SWRural-fk2ub People seem to ignore all that stuff when complaining about HS2. Nobody likes to see their old haunts ripped up but unfortunately you can't stop progress. Most of my childhood has been deleted from the map. I grew up in Aylesbury (and I'm still here) and the fields I played in are now well-established housing developments. Even my secondary school, Quarrendon, has gone.
Agreed, that sideways view of the viaduct will be spectacular in it's setting when finished. Plus, as you state, I think when all the vegetation planting completes and is established it will look good.
Thanks for this informative video. Things are progressing on this section since your last video.
Thanks
Thanks for the tip
I used to cycle down Leather Lane to get to School in Gt Missenden, this is where I was bought up. I now avoid going anywhere near the places that I knew and have been destroyed. What an utterly depressing video, breaks my heart.
It's quite an interesting section.
They seem to have put in place the majority of infrastructure for the overbridges, before digging the actual track bed.
@AFCManUk It's a bit of both really. Some bits have the beginnings of trackbed down and yet other parts haven't had anything done at all. I'm still waiting to see the plans for Leather Lane bridge. I check before making these videos and there's nothing yet.
Surely the bridges are all so similar. I think there is a bat roost around there, maybe that’s the delay. Or is it BCC delaying things and adding to costs?
@PeterMatthews-y5g The bridges are all different but some look similar. I don't know what the delay is with Leather Lane. Regarding the plans have a look at this video I recently made:
ruclips.net/video/S7aGpwOYusg/видео.html
Plenty of scope for rewilding with long-lost native trees.
@Macc1 That is the plan. I recommend you watch this video I made showing what is planned for most of this section. A variety of native trees, wild flowers, shrubs and grass will be planted as part of the landscaping.
ruclips.net/video/S7aGpwOYusg/видео.html
@@KarlVaughan.. if you honestly believe the clowns at HS2 Ltd have plans to "landscape" this monstrous blot on the landscape, you're even more naive than I thought!
They couldn't give a toss about the environment & they've already incurred numerous fines for multiple breaches of environmental issues.
Thousands of trees planted along the route in Warwickshire where the vast majority perished due to lack of aftercare.
The pollution of streams, rivers & other waterways with toxic chemicals.
The bulldozing of mile upon mile of hedgerows containing nesting birds when they specifically promised to wait until the nesting season was over .. the list goes on.
@@CRIMSONANT1Yet more hyperbole and mythology. The rewilding is already going on. And your wild allegations over fines, pollution and the like are a classic indication of someone with no real knowledge of the reality. Evidence??
@Polarbear1-b6j I wouldn't bother engaging with that idiot. He's just here to be nasty to people. In fact, I don't know why I keep him here because nobody likes him. He never gets any thumbs up. What a sad way to carry on. He's like the people who constantly bother HS2's Facebook page. What is the point? It's such a waste of time. It's here to stay and nothing they say will change things.
@@KarlVaughanI don't see any harm in putting reality and fact in front of the person. As you say it's being built so pointing out the futility of soundbites in social media echo chambers might help the person to move onto something more productive.
Has planning permission been applied submitted for the bridge at Leather Lane yet?
@Kevwendover12 I've looked on the council's planning portal and there is nothing for Leather Lane overbridge.
right at the end of this video there is a crawler crane in an excavation _ it's towards where the green tunnel will start _ in front of this crane is a large circular concrete ring _ looks like a shaft is being excavated _ do you know its purpose _ drainage/ sewer or for another reason ? _ as usual another informative piece _ look forward to more
@@Michael-61-n3l this is a shaft into which a small 2.4m diameter TBM will be lowered, this TBM will construct an 800m long drain. There is an aquifer here at Coombe Hill and, I believe, that the springs that it feeds will be cut through during the green tunnel construction, this impacts the feed into the canal and Weston Turville reservoir. I'm guessing this drain will ensure that the aquifer is still able to feed the canal and reservoir. There is a close up shot on a recent cuemaster video.
@Maxhead_room _ yes _ I've seen that piece _ thankyou for the explanation _ know to keep an eye on footage there _one of those costs that doesn't really show up as all the work ends up being hidden from view but important as watercourses are capable of doing damage to embankment/cutting if not managed with care _ thanks
I’m not in construction so looking for some informed advice. As an outsider it appears that the construction is massively overcomplex in terms of earthworks and haul roads. I feel that many hours have been expended unnecessarily when faster construction could have been achieved. Genuine open question, I do support the concept of HS2 but fear that the cost will adversely effect future high speed rail in the UK.
Most of the land used for stuff like haul roads will be rewilded, before it was mostly monocrop farmland.
Hi Rachel, It's not massively over complex; it's just what is required these days. Haul roads, stockpiles, laydown areas, temporary drainage arrangements, retention dams, temporary access for local residents, and public footpaths are all necessary. The days of an army of men using picks, shovels, and wheelbarrows, (with virtually no ammenities provided) are over. HS2 is a big job, no matter how you look at it.
Always a pleasure to see your creative camera work. This time a reverse flight path against lovely winter sunlight. What's wrong with me! Am I going soft on HS2 with nothing negative to say against it? I think the real demons will emerge in time. Thank you for keeping us well informed
I think the opposite is true, the alarmist mythology made up by the Stop HS2 narrative is already starting to fade as the line evolves and starts to fade into the countryside.
@@willhemmings I think all time will do is demonstrate how wrong all the naysayers were. There were plenty of folks who vigorously complained about Crossrail and in a very short space of time it has become an overwhelming success with passenger volumes ahead of that expected.
@willhemmings Thanks for watching. I think it will be interesting to see how all of this pans out. I'm particularly looking forward to the landscaping as it will make it all look so much better.
Hi Karl.
I was wondering if you knew for how long Waddesdon Hill is closed to traffic, as it has all been diverted through Aylesbury along the Bicester Road.
There are roadworks due to start on 10 Feb for 11 days, at the junction for the Drive-Thru McDonalds and Broadfields retail park and Tesco.
The amount of extra traffic along there is already horrendous at times, and I dread to think how bad it is going to get when said roadworks start.
@AFCManUk The information I've found gives the end date of 28th Feb.
@@KarlVaughan Thanks Karl,,,,I guess we better prepare for traffic nightmare for a few days :D
Are there any restrictions flying over the HS2 route? Thinking of flying my M4P there😊
@keithhowland9333 I tend to keep my distance along this section. You will have problems flying nearer Stoke Mandeville because of Halton airfield. If you have a look on Drone Assist you will see what I mean.
@ did you get any special permission??
@keithhowland9333 No, but I think I would need to ask if I wanted to go real close but then again, I usually shoot on the weekends when very few workers are on site. I happen to know that drones are regularly used by HS2 which is why I keep out of the way. That doesn't stop others though but if they want to risk it then that's up to them. I am planning to do the Stoke Mandeville area which will require getting permission from the airfield. It's not very active but the restriction is still there.
@@KarlVaughan Thanks Karl I’ll bear that in mind. That time lapse stuff was soo good, how engineering techniques have advanced eh? Keep ‘em coming👍
Karl what is your ebike model?
@andrewpowellnz It's a Cube Reaction Hybrid 750. If you look in my cycling playlist you will see more it there.
Sometimes it's easy to forget just how monumentally big the project is. You covered a fraction and that in itself is impressive civil engineering.
Your video really do show that scale.
But alas I still don't see the benefits of HS2 to anyone that doesn't work in central London.
@monkeysausageclub There is an awful going on along this section. Lots of bridges, tunnel portals and a couple of viaducts. As for HS2 itself, its purpose is to free up capacity on the West Coast mainline which will affect other parts of the network. If that line is free of high speed trains then more of the regular trains can run. That is the plan anyway.
I think it will prove to benefit Birmingham and the West Midlands much more than London.
The concreting of England, all to save 20 mins (for those who can afford the fare) from somewhere in London to somewhere in Birmingham. Cost? £100Bn+ of taxpayers money.
Wow, pack the mythology in, from "20 mins" to "unaffordable ticket" to the "somewhere" nonsense and to finish off the "£100 Billion" thing, all of it complete nonsense. And especially the "taxpayers" thing, it's actually paid for with borrowing repaid via revenue and future economic growth.
Oh no, 10 meters of farmland will be concreted over once completed. I must rage on RUclips and spread misinformation about somehting i dont know enough about!
Absolute waste of money, what a huge impact on the environment this monstrosity.
And yet the impacts are quite small, the capacity needs very large.
How else do you propose increasing network capacity?
The environmental impact is small, especially when compared to motorway expansion - which is the alternative even if you try and pretend otherwise.
as a point _ a droner "wandering northerner" has been covering the A1/A428 Blackcat island works _ basically a billion in work for several miles of road improvement _ there's a lot of piles of material etc _ a lot of complaints about noise dust mess etc etc etc _ infrastructure building requires spoil to be moved stockpiled stored in order to work through the project _ greatly hampered by the necessity to keep both road & rail open as much as possible _ this adds to the overall cost __ we will see the same with Eastwest rail in south Cambridgeshire when greenfield site works begins shortly _ it will look exactly like hs2 sites _ I believe there are about 40 level crossing to be replaced by bridges _ several hundred million there in total costs _ and if you're concerned about development welcome to the proposed Oxford Cambridge ARC _ that'll be how many houses on greenfield sites _ Lower Thames crossing isn't going to look different either _ 10 billion for a road !
Imagine how much CO2 is being produced in order to create this monstrosity. So much for net zero.
Good thing HS2 is leading the way with stuff like low carbon concrete, technology that spills over into the general construction industry, plus the long term carbon savings from more rail capacity.
@Polarbear1-b6j "...the long term carbon savings from _more rail capacity_ ..." Which nobody wanted or needed.
@@pauls3075Yet it is wanted by many and many more than some think and more importantly is much needed, the data is clear.
@@pauls3075 Well that's certainly one way of demonstrating toall and sundry that you know nothing about what HS2 does. If you did a modicum of research you wouldn't say such daft things in future.
Imagine how many flights will be taken out of the sky and vehicles off the roads. As CO2 goes HS2 construction is a drop in the ocean compared to just 1 day of road or air traffic.
You'll never solve the climate crisis by telling everyone they have to live like the Amish. Because they won't.
what the hell have they done to our countryside.
im shocked.
it's being built on. just like all the housing estates and relief roads that are popping up. i'd rather this than another monstrosity like the A41. and yes, i live around there.
@@mayfairblue the build is in the most disruptive phase at the moment, there will be plenty of planting of vegetation and creation of new habitats, increasing the biodiversity from what was there before the bulldozers arrived. Be more objective and appreciate that building railways is a good thing to do!
Guess what- you live in a house that at one time was quite literally a building site. And I bet you are completely silent about more destructive projects like the lower Thames crossing, or the loss of ancient woodland to holiday parks... Classic nimby.
@@Maxhead_room .. "plenty of planting of vegetation & creation of new habitats" .. you sure about that because I don't share your optimism - HS2 Ltd don't give a stuff about the environment.
Are you aware they've already incurred numerous fines for multiple breaches of environmental issues?
Thousands of trees planted along the route in Warwickshire where the vast majority perished due to lack of aftercare.
The pollution of streams, rivers & other waterways with toxic chemicals.
The bulldozing of mile upon mile of hedgerows containing nesting birds when they specifically promised to wait until the nesting season was over .. the list goes on.
HS2 is an environmental disaster of epic proportions & Britain's biggest infrastructure mistake in half a century.
@@CRIMSONANT1 here comes the fella who told us tickets would be £1,000-2,000 per journey. You troll every HS2 video with so much misinformation and then when challenged state that it is for others to prove your statements are false. Maybe cite your claims if you would like to start building any form of credibility.
