You use the recoil to launch yourself above pits and then you keep hovering by shooting. The only weapons that I can remember off the top of my head where you can hover are: Sawed Off, Snake Shotgun, Military Shotgun (It's knockback isn't enough for it ammo capacity, so it's short lived), Minigun (A bit tricky getting it to point down though, it's longer than your body. Sometimes you shoot yourself off the map), Snake Minigun (Same problem as the Minigun + I've noticed that you occasionally lineally lose height while hovering), and the Deagle (It's near impossible to aim but in theory it lets you hover).
