  • This video was filmed by Gearoid Lynch who is involved in the grassroots campaign group No Fracking Ireland. The video was shot in North Leitrim, in the home place of the 1916 Rising leader Sean Mac Diarmada. Despite the fact that there are numerous obvious/documented problems with fracking and international calls from academics and communities across the U.S, Australia and Europe for fracking to be banned, the Irish government are allowing the industry to continue to work here towards getting their full license to drill. Tamboran Resources (one of three companies with license in Ireland) are now engaging in a divide and conquer stratedy within communities, they are having secret meetings in this region and offering money to local business people. The licenses handed out to the three companies cover vast areas of rural Ireland in 12 counties. This is also a major cross-border issue, Fermanagh is also under threat from this industry. The Irish government have said they are waiting for the Irish EPA to do a comprehensive study before it gives the industry full license to proceed, we believe the government will do this unless we the people strongly oppose this. Already 5 county councils have called on the government to ban fracking. Please sign the petition to have fracking banned in Ireland - www.gopetition.com/petitions/b... and Northern Ireland - www.gopetition.com/petitions/n... Continuing on from below - I live in Victoria Australia and it is described as the 'food bowl' of Australia. Our state government announced today in the The Age newspaper: 'State Bans Fracking' - Clearly there are some significant concerns.

To support Jim’s opinion, parts of Australia are indeed desert but other parts like Tasmania and Victoria are not dissimilar to the Irish landscape, and would also have environmental and health impacts from fracking. My mother Kate (McGurl) who was born in Kiltyclogher, talked often of beautiful Leitrim. My grandfather had 20 acres of land and we would fetch water twice a day from a water well in a nearby forest. Would I be eager to drink from the same well post fracking? I think not.

Well folks, I was born and reared in North Leitrim and I still live here. However, I believe that it should be left up to to the various Government Depts to decide whether or not unconventional gas production should be allowed in Ireland. Ideology should be put aside and science should determine whether or not this gas should be extracted.
