What makes me so mad are the people who give you one amount after you tell them their total and when you go punch that amount in they say “wait a minute I found a dollar!” Or “I found a quarter!” It makes me freeze up completely and I no longer know how to help them because I get completely confused. I already typed in the previous amount! 😭 Sometimes they see me freeze up and get extremely impatient with me and start speaking to me like I am a child. This gives me so much anxiety about counting change. So thank you for this technique!

I used to work on cash and I hated it when people did that to me. It would throw me off and I felt stupid. I thought that I was the only one who was like that too. I wish that people would have a little compassion and understanding. I never do that to cashiers when I purchase some thing. I always have my money ready to give them and I don't change my mind about what to give them.
I also used to work with a cashier, someone who I knew and didn't like because she was a nasty person, who had this weird method of counting the till at the end of the shift. A method that I never ever saw any of my coworkers or bosses use to train me: as she is counting through the cash she would keep deducting amounts to keep aside to come up with a total. Something like that I don't know how to explain. It completely threw me off but she expected me to know how to do it and even gave me the impression that she thought that I was stupid for not knowing how to do it. She also asked me what I would do if someone handed me a counterfeit bill. I told her that I would give it back to the customer and say that I can't accept it because it's a counterfeit. That was what I was taught. She told me no, you hold onto it and you have to call the police. I was never taught that before.

Thank you SO much for this video! For all the adults on here whining about people my age (I'm almost 22) they teach way more stupid stuff like geometry, algebra, and statistics far more than real life skills, even in college. I do blame calculators and technology for this, but the other half of it lies with teachers/schools that don't make basic life-skill math classes available to kids/teenagers.

I'm 30 years old, used to do calculus in my head with no problem but I wasn't taught how to count change back this way. I can calculate the amount due back just fine but the trick of verbally counting it back to the customer from small denomination to large out of the till is not a skill I have. Thank you so much for this video! I just got hired at my first job as a waitress (I also run the cash register and have some other duties). I never learned how to count back change, and thought it was highly difficult. Now it seems almost too easy!

I'm so glad for this video. I didn't realize I wasnt taught this until my first cashier job and I panicked. I used to use calculators but I always wanted to learn because I didnt like that I couldn't count back change. I figured it out after a while but it would have been better to have been drilled on this the way they drilled algebra and geometry and trigonometry in school. Thank you for this video. 💖💖💖

Im 23 and the idea of counting back change seems simple but also hard. I dont have a problem counting back full dollar amounts, the change is the confusing part. Just break the change down until you get to the dollar amount, then do the bills. Cant always rely on a calculator but I keep my phone with me just to be sure.

People actually hate that. Like, this lady one day showed me this exact thing, but even though I was flustered when I pressed the button too fast. I still was able to figure out what the change was in a decent amount of time. I counted but, no? She made me put all the change back and walked me through counting out ex-fucking-actly what I had already taken out. It was in-fucking-furiating. And it had me so mad through out a bit of the rest of my day. And I didn't even remember what she told me to to do and never used it. I did it differently than her. Using math rather than counting the way she did. Not that you shouldn't do what you did, I just wanted to share. I'm glad I did watch a few of these videos because I didn't know how to count change. I did of course. math. Not simple counting. Actually I was just researching to make sure I am doing everything thing the best I can and fastest I can at my job. I get it she's older and I looked like I didn't know what I was doing. Which actually is a thing about me. Perfectly 🥰 capable and know exactly what I'm doing, but don't look like it. So then people wanna show me how to do shit when 8/10 times I know what I'm doing.

I am sorry you had a bad day because of the way she acted. Some people act like that to feel superior to others. I wish their bad behavior didn't live rent free in our minds but unforunately we are more likely to remember a bad incident rather that a good one. When I run across those people, I like to take back control through customer service and kill them with kindness. "Oh, wow! I didn't know how to do that Ma'am! Thank you so much for teaching me! I never knew!" They think they are awesome and I feel vindicated because they walk away happy and I didn't lose my cool with them. Don't get me wrong I still think "are you kidding me, lady?" but I try to turn the bad incident into a good one and laugh about it later.
