as someone who became a Johnlocker before even becoming an official Sherlockian, i can say the road isn't easy. like, really, the second i watched the restaurant scene i was like "oh, people ship this". and so then i proceeded (i was needing detective stories to read back then to kill time anyways). and saw all the admiration and heartbreak in Sherlock's eyes. yet he didn't do anything. he just helped John with everything he need. he just... selflessly flung himself over whatever John's needs was, and helped him far more than he needed to.
I ship JohnLock, but in a sort of platonic way. As in John could walk into the flat holding Rose and as he goes past Sherlock say "I love you." to her, but Sherlock isn't paying attention and says "I love you too, John". Then instead of correcting him John just goes with it, until the end of the day, when he finally asks Sherlock why he said that. Sherlock responds with "You are my first and only best friend, I not only enjoy, but require your companionship. If you left me I would be back on drugs, you keep me clean and happy. I love you as my friend or even family, and I hope you never leave me again." Without really thinking, and John's surprised because he never thought Sherlock would admit it more than the very few times he did, that he needed someone.
