That menu planning is something I need to get on! I have full freezers, cupboards and my canning shelves are bulging. I tend to store and save rather than use what I have. Gotta get a few dishes created that we can rotate and just keep using up what I have. Thanks for the incentive.
Usually I focus on purchasing only items on sale but I set a $ limit for each trip so I don't overspend. As I put away the purchases I plan 3 days 3-meals - the items for those go directly in the refrigerator when you know what meat you have on hand it's easy to plan if you're making a caserole, stew or bbq. Then I add side dishes depending if I'm cooking on the grill, in the oven or on the stovetop. When I'm using the oven I typically am making s casserole so add a baked potato, If I'm using the grill I add baked beans & skewer fresh veggies, If I'm cooking up jarred protiens on the stovetop I'll add rice, keeps a variety of meals using protiens fresh or canned.
This video has so much great information! I love the calendar. That could also be used for making note of when to start seedlings, put seedlings in the ground, and when to direct sow seeds. It’s always fun to see you! Blessings on your stocking! 😁🤗
Angela, what great ideas! I like to get vegetables and fruits when they're fresh and in season in my area. Depending on what they are and how long they keep, we'll freeze dry or can, for the most part. I have only done meat once, but it was amazing, and we plan to do some canning of chicken breasts in the next few weeks. We think the prices are going sky high soon. Also, we stocked up on toiletries, vitamins, and safety items like bandages and triple-antibiotic ointment a few weeks ago. I hope your cousin's life settles down soon. They're lucky to have a caring family to lend support!
Angela, to help meal plan. Write down what you eat every day for a month and then make a plan off of that. This has helped me a lot, because it is food that I actually eat not what I would like to make when I have more time. I do a $5.00 prep every week, it is usually food but sometimes it's batteries or flashlights, first aid stuff etc. Sometimes I don't get to the store every week so then I will save up that $5.00 until the next week and then I have $10.00. I put a reminder in my calendar on my phone so that I don't forget. I have a spread sheet that I list what I got that week and how much I spent. I try to only buy food that we eat and rotate it. There is no point in buying a whole bunch of MRE's that you will never use, or one of those "emergency meals in a bucket" That is half full of things that your family is allergic to, shop wisely that way your not just wasting money.
Great ideas I do what you do. I find my vegetables and stuff in cans and my tomatoes when I can get them on Clarence or whatever it does save money in the long run and I just got a bunch of cans of tomato sauce and use my Mrs. wages spaghetti spices in them and made spaghetti sauce and candidate. It’ll get me through a yearand I only paid $10 for 20 cans of tomato sauce.
I crossed a Sale which blew me away! Mature Hens for 99/lb! The soft mushy chicken right beside it was Sale Price $3.89/lb. Yes, that IS a Sale Price, here in Ontario Canada! Price is around $5.89/lb! I got 3 Hens. Supposedly.a Roasting chicken. Worst possible it's too tough? I can make Chicken Pot Pie Soup!
I don't Stock much in canned goods. I watch for specific things, like Corned Beef in tins, Tuna, Canned beans, Pea Soup, Condensed Milk. Bottles of juice sometimes. I will buy tomato chunks with herbs.
Be careful with the dented goods. The dent should NEVER be a deep indent, dent is NEVER on the seam of the can,the dent is NEVER in the rim where the seal is. These need to be a short term for sure and NEVER long term. Hope this helps. I watch all my cans I buy for dents the associate didn't find while stocking.

You can do it! We can do it together!
