This video made me fear circuits when I just began Factorio, due to its length. After a few days of gameplay, I am back and truly believe that you really made a miracle resuming circuit logic in just one hour, while keeping it... Logical.
    Amazing video.

My man, this is incredibly well put together, I'm very impressed with the organization and preparation. I consider myself pretty savvy with circuits already but I like to check around and see what kind of resources are available to newer players, for a long time when I looked I always felt like the available content fell short of what I thought it could/should be, but this is just perfect in every way. I skipped to the "visual display" example and I just love how you progressively stepped through the improvements, just such a perfect demonstration of how circuit design goes in this game, get something working and over time realize, "yeah it can definitely be cooler."

I have a small note on the safe crossing at the end. You can actually do it with only connecting one of the rail signals. This is because turning a rail signal off using circuits will stop it from outputting any signals, even though it's technically in the "red" state. So if you instead use a condition on the gate of open when red == 0 (don't forget to have the yellow state of the rail signal also output red) then you won't have the feedback loop.
Another neat trick with the gates is the fact that one gate is usually connected to wall on both sides. Which means you can connect wires to the 2 different sides, and set circuit conditions for both. Now I honestly don't remember off of the top of my head whether it performs and AND or an OR operation between the two, but if I'd have to guess I think it's AND. So when both the conditions are met, then the gate will open.
In any case, this tutorial is absolutely fantastic, and I've added it to our faq over at the factorio discord.

35:20 I utilize a "belt scanner" like this to pause the infeed of a material into a rotary feed belt so that more material can be loaded from production machines. I generally use this in a uranium processing facility, allowing me to cycle the 235 across my enrichment machines, while still allowing the same belt system to accept new material from nearby raw ore refining machines.
Thanks for such a well made tutorial.

As someone who at one point majored in Electrical Engineering, the explanation for the SR latch with accompanying visuals was a better explanation for the functioning of an SR latch than I ever received in college. This should be the intro video for courses on Logic Gates, because what Electrical Engineering wouldn't immediately appreciate Factorio?

Just have to say, this is by far the best video i ever seen in ciruits! Funny enough, half of this stuff is used in real life!
Got a sub, between this and oil video! I did learn a little bit but more new players should be seeing these!
I know video is already over 18 months old, but one tweak for quality. Audio levels between clips jumped around, nothing major that needed headphone trigger warnings but there was a change and as someone who is HOH i had to keep readjusting my audio so i could hear/not go deaf :D

I love Factorio , but you just made it more educational game (with electric circuit degree haha! ). I can tell you; I have huge problems with "Oil field" and "power issues." I hope to learn more about circuits with your video. Currently learning bots and blueprints in my 1st week.

I been playing around with the train gate and I thought you might have wanted to add sound alert to your door "this is simple for anyone to use". Just hook a copper wire from your gate to your speaker where you have gate color set (by default it is "Red" "Green" and "Yellow") so just set your speaker to the color, where *location* you wish the alarm to go off, I use Red color for alarm (which is signal value). If you want to get fancy you can add the "Alert Settings" underneath the signal value to any color you would like. All this does is flash a color during that alarm. next to your bottom build bar. Adding rail chain signals is a lot easier than building gates :D

It literally is programming. Just using a low level building block, rather than lines of code like you’d usually use.

I always used the accumulator to turn a water pump on and off for my steam engines. It could still cycle a bit but not as fast as just hooking up directly. Also uses way less wire because you are only cycling one thing on and off. The set-reset station is a good idea tho! Also, it makes me feel smart when I came up with stuff by myself, like the pumps controlling the oil cracking!

And then I see that you found a better way to do it haha. I had mine set up with a dozen refineries, and just went off of values. If my petrol dropped below 25% full, the light oil to petrol turned on. Same with heavy to light. I do like the idea of only running if you have less light than heavy tho. Would it still be possible for one to fill up one of them and cause a backup that way? Theoretically you could run out of heavy oil
