It's also cast iron, not aluminum. Rated at 3 tons with a single line pull. I honestly believe it would move double that if the winch rope line would hold up!
Hey Eric-we use the come-a-long to compress the side grain to avoid shrinkage gaps from opening up as the wood dries, but we don't use housings because we design joinery that doesn't require housings, or for the entire cross section of the timber to be supported at the ends. We avoid housings becasue they tend to unnecessarily weaken the supporting timber by removing more of it, and because the nature of housings (where an observer can easily see the intersection of the timber and the housing) tend to make shrinkage gaps very noticeable. Instead, we reduce the timber at the ends to a tenon, which is not visible after installation so no gap can be seen between the mortice and tenon.

Great explanation. Personally, the More Power Puller is a better choice simply because it comes with Dyneema not steel cables. Way safer.

Is using this to apply compression to the joints, combined with planed timbers, why you don't tend to house your joints?
