    William Bradford, speaking in 1630 of the founding of the Plymouth Bay Colony, said that all great and honorable actions are accompanied with great difficulties, and both must be enterprised and overcome with answerable courage.
    If this capsule history of our progress teaches us anything, it is that man, in his quest for knowledge and progress, is determined and cannot be deterred. The exploration of space will go ahead, whether we join in it or not, and it is one of the great adventures of all time, and no nation which expects to be the leader of other nations can expect to stay behind in the race for space.
    Those who came before us made certain that this country rode the first waves of the industrial revolutions, the first waves of modern invention, and the first wave of nuclear power, and this generation does not intend to founder in the backwash of the coming age of space. We mean to be a part of it--we mean to lead it. For the eyes of the world now look into space, to the moon and to the planets beyond, and we have vowed that we shall not see it governed by a hostile flag of conquest, but by a banner of freedom and peace. We have vowed that we shall not see space filled with weapons of mass destruction, but with instruments of knowledge and understanding.
    Yet the vows of this Nation can only be fulfilled if we in this Nation are first, and, therefore, we intend to be first. In short, our leadership in science and in industry, our hopes for peace and security, our obligations to ourselves as well as others, all require us to make this effort, to solve these mysteries, to solve them for the good of all men, and to become the world's leading space-faring nation.
    We set sail on this new sea because there is new knowledge to be gained, and new rights to be won, and they must be won and used for the progress of all people. For space science, like nuclear science and all technology, has no conscience of its own. Whether it will become a force for good or ill depends on man, and only if the United States occupies a position of pre-eminence can we help decide whether this new ocean will be a sea of peace or a new terrifying theater of war. I do not say the we should or will go unprotected against the hostile misuse of space any more than we go unprotected against the hostile use of land or sea, but I do say that space can be explored and mastered without feeding the fires of war, without repeating the mistakes that man has made in extending his writ around this globe of ours.
    There is no strife, no prejudice, no national conflict in outer space as yet. Its hazards are hostile to us all. Its conquest deserves the best of all mankind, and its opportunity for peaceful cooperation many never come again. But why, some say, the moon? Why choose this as our goal? And they may well ask why climb the highest mountain? Why, 35 years ago, fly the Atlantic? Why does Rice play Texas?
    We choose to go to the moon. We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard, because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win, and the others, too.
    It is for these reasons that I regard the decision last year to shift our efforts in space from low to high gear as among the most important decisions that will be made during my incumbency in the office of the Presidency.

      It's a shame they don't. today's people speak like: we chose to go the safe zone, not because it is hard, but because we are pussies. We chose to yield to stupidity because we are inbred.
      We need to recapture this feeling of achievement and move the *uck out of safe spaces and comfort zones and apply our asses to the hard work of BUILDING anything worthwhile.

    I was at Rice University the other day and stood behind the podium in this video. They have a nice exhibit if this day in the Fondren Library on campus. JFK was a great orator. This was one if his best speeches and inspired everyone to his challenge to land a man in the moon before the end if the decade. What an achievement! This was a great time! We need this kid if spirit in our country again. We need this level of class in our country again. A great speech!

    In a thousand years, when humanity is exploring the stars, our descendants will look back at this speech and say, "This is where it started. This is how it all began." The Cold War and the conflicts between the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. were fleeting things and they'll eventually become just another moment in history. But the launch of Sputnik, the flight of Yuri Gagarin, this speech and the Moon landing itself will go on to resonate with our civilization for as long as it exists. Because the human race must explore, it's in our nature, it's a part of our instinct. National strife and societal ills are things that can be beaten and can be solved given enough time and unity. But there is no end to exploration or the attainment of knowledge, these things are eternal. It's what we evolved to do, it's our species' purpose.

The fact that he delivers all of his speeches flawlessly with out any um’s and ah’s makes it that extra bit perfect. I think that speeches as motivational as this ought to be spoken today.     Damn listen to that optimisim that oozed from his voice. That confidence that America would be the first to go to the moon despite their long list of rocket failures in comparison to a very successful USSR.
    Kennedy I believe is one of the few people alive to truly embody a generation. When all Americans felt they could take on the world and do the things no other civilization had ever done.

    This speech of course has some of the most quotable sentences in all of History, but it also hides other messages very inspiring as well. "I don't think we oughta waste any money, but I think we oughta do the job". That should be a guiding principle for the public sector today - we forgot we have to "be bold". We don't do the hard things any more. Spending a lot of money does not equate to wasting money, and we can't be at a standstill until the last person on Earth has their comfort before we do our endeavors. In fact if we do that, that's a guarantee more and more people will lose their comfort.

    A few days ago, I decided to study the greatest historical speeches. I was watching a lecture by Eric Edmeades and became very curious about the idea of mastering my public speaking skill.
    My intention is to watch as many greatest speeches as I may find and write comments linking them all together. Since this is the first speech I've watched after I had decided to go deep down the rabbit hole, I wanna say a few words about the algorithm I'm gonna stick to while doing my study.
    1. chose a speech
    2. watch it
    3. write a short comment
    4. link one speech to another
    Just as simple as that. The goal is to watch a hundred speeches as fast as I can and see how it's gonna affect my public speaking skill.
    Today is the 10th day of my commitment to make daily speeches and upload them on youtube.
    I like how Kennedy persuades people to invest in hard tasks and plays on emotions of national pride, competitiveness, and curiosity.

      the moon landings could have gone further if jfk wasnt assasinated and we would be alot further along than we are right now and america would be a different place and run differently than it does now and technology and space exploration would be the norm now at its early stages but still better than nothing 50years later where we are now think of the possibilities if he lived it would be whole lot better than it is now

    I wish we had a president capable of standing up and announcing bigger space budgets instead of quiet slashes. Every dollar spent on the Apollo program generated thousands in new technology, industry, and patents.

    Aspiring to travel to the moon or to Mars was once considered a courageous and noble thing. In 2012, when Newt Gingrich, citing JFK as an inspiration, talked about a manned mission to Mars or a colony on the moon, he was ridiculed. Times have indeed changed, not the least of which is the financial condition of the country compared to what it was in 1962.

    Thank You President Kennedy. You were not perfect, as so many wish to believe and place you high on a pedestal, but you were a good man, a good President. A President of strength and character who cared about the well being of people, the future of our nation and our species. You accomplished much in your short time in office and had the foresight to chose an excellent successor. I hope some day soon there will come a day when more leaders emerge like you.

    I must say that I have watched and listened to several of Kennedy's speeches and it's hard to say which one is best. They were all well said and done. I like this one though because he challenged America to lead and win the space race. Kennedy is the one who really got NASA started and inspired us to explore space. I'm honored that he came to Houston, Texas to give his speech and to make Houston NASA's home. Most importantly, he said we would go to the moon in the 60s and we did in 1969. It's truly a disgrace and a tragedy that he was killed. Kennedy was, is and always will be one of the best U.S. presidents of all time. He was an excellent communicator and an exceptional leader. He made his share of mistakes but overall he did a good job. When he spoke almost everyone paid attention. An exception was Johnson. I noticed in this and in other speeches Kennedy gave that Johnson was only half paying attention. He was always jealous of Kennedy and I think he was very disrespectful to him most of the time. Again, Kennedy really got the space program going and it's a damn shame it had to end because of Obama. Obama killed it. Johnson and Obama will never be as good as Kennedy. Johnson was half good and half bad and Obama is a joke. Not only that, Obama is the worst president ever. Kennedy is the best president in the last 100 years and a one of the top 10 presidents of all time.

    I find it sad that this is the last Presidential Speech that truly motivated me. I would also like to add that these were all "Made in the USA". So don't ever tell me "It can't be done" here at home.

    This may be a dumb comment to leave after viewing such a good and substantive speech about our efforts in space at the time. However, I believe the Rice speech may be one of the only - if not the only - surviving color videotapes of JFK. I know it's degraded (Sept. 1962) from the many copies that have been made since, but it does look like it was from a color TV broadcast. If anybody has any insight about this - including if I'm wrong and this is film - I'd be happy to hear reply comments.
