i love this game! they did a great job. i found it on steam after i finished obra dinn and had that “man if only i could forget this game and replay it blind again” feeling. golden idol filled the obra dinn shaped hole in my heart lol

People talk about the joy of watching someone play one of your favorite games for the first time and I'm finally feeling it.
Just a note: for chapter one, the first guy who pushed the other guy off a cliff (Albert Cloudsley) is not the same as the guy who died falling off a horse in part 2 (his son, Sebastian Cloudsley, whose will is being read in part 3).
So Albert got the gold idol by killing that other guy and bequeathed it to his son, Sebastian, who had the book about spontaneous combustion and might’ve been preparing to use the idol for misdeeds. But since Sebastian died falling off his horse, he left the idol to Willard Wright, who was then murdered at the pub by Ash Blair, a tobacco salesman (per the note on Little Pip). The man who talked to the bartender about Willard’s murder in the cutscene between Chapter 2 Parts 1 and 2 was probably Edmund Cloudsley or Peter Battley, based on the high-collared jacket hanging in the foyer which resembles the one the person in the cutscene was wearing and the fact that they weren’t the ones smoking (and the jacket has no tobacco products on it). Whoever currently has the ruby ring is the person from the cutscene, and they probably killed or bribed Ash Blair to get the idol back from him, unless he didn’t take it and it was just left to Edmund in Willard’s will. That means it was most likely Edmund in the cutscene since it’s locked away in his office.
That’s what I gather about how the golden idol has changed hands so far lol, pretty complicated already!
This is a great analysis, but I do have one correction: The man who murdered Willard Wright was David Gorran, Edmund Cloudsley’s servant. Ash Blair was a fake name he took after seeing it on the tobacco to ensure that the murder couldn’t be linked to him in any way. The two look identical, and imo it makes very little sense for there to randomly be a tobacco salesman who has no other connections to the story. Hopefully that makes sense!

Also the man questioning Oscar Boyton in the cutscene was wearing a very fancy hat and had a ruby ring on his finger. It's not relevant yet but will be later
@@hellowormwood Gab even recognized David Gorran's sprite in the inn scene, but then promptly forgot his real name and didn't even consider that Ash Blair was an alias (despite David Gorran having a pack of Ash Blair tobacco on his person in the spontaneous combustion scene; David Gorran was also the one who asked Little Pip to get him Ash Blair tobacco).
Kind of off-topic, but it killed me slightly that Gab didn't realize the rooms in Edmund Cloudsley's house were the servants' quarters and kept trying to put Edmund and Peter in the rooms. 😭

This game and Return of the Obra Dinn are two games that I was shocked you haven't played before! Super excited for this video, and if you like Golden Idol, you should definitely check out Obra Dinn.

@@Tiny_Gardens That's strange, because when I played this I also misread the first word in the code as "this" like three or four times before I noticed it's actually "use", so did the top comment on this video, and so did you now. I wonder what sort of illusion makes one immediately read "I have to use this" as four words instead of five.

BTW this game is so worth a replay because you catch a lot of hints earlier in the game of what’s to come and understand it more. At least that was the case for me

Wow this game is so interesting, after seeing you playing 1st case, I bought it and played it side-by-side with you. The Darkhand Steward one stumped me as well, but I managed to discover it was the letter on Ada which was encoded.

I started playing the game tonight and it’s a lot of fun. I wasn’t gonna get into it but now I’m hooked. Definitely one of those late night lights dimmed games to play before bed (I refuse to go to bed now haha 😂). Love the video!!

Duck Detective is clearly influenced by this game, it's easier but the game is too short. The Case of Golden Idol is just... perfect.
I haven't even started watching this, but I already know I will love it just based on the art style! Excited to relax after a long day at work watching some Gab ☺

One of my favorite mystery games, so disappointed I missed this
Some of the cases can be difficult so make sure you have the time and energy for them! As you saw in these five the cases connect to each other. If you play in smaller chunks and need help remembering, you can easily switch to the chapter menu and check the other cases via the buttons on right corner (at least that what I saw in another playthrough).

Edmund Cloudsley made me think of an old-gentleman version of Butthead. I am sick with a bad fever and this game kind of hurt my brain worse, honestly, but I liked it tho. Next time will be better to watch if I am feeling better. Thank you!

It is though, it’s forcing people to stay accountable no matter the time/place. This issue needs to remain forefront in discourse, not just pulled out when convenient (ie “on the news”). That’s how change happens. Talking about it on the news still hasn’t done anything to stop what’s happening. We have to make it happen through constant attention.

Both the main game and its DLC's are amazing. One of the best "detective" games out there, no doubt.
The art style reminds me of Dave the Diver 🥰
This game has a clever design, there is so many ways you can find single answer, like the darkhand steward and in the third case you can see that the Pear Brothers have brush with their first letter of their name on it, that is one way to let you know that both are the Pear Brothers.
Gabs you should totally check out the Devcats' new game! Since you played A Building Full of Cats I think you're gonna like A Tower Full of Cats and A Castle Full of Cats too

Love this art style - reminds me of games like Monkey Island (yes I’m that old) which could be a fun one to stream one day…for us oldies 😬
You could tell which room was David Gorran's because of the tobacco named Ash Blair in the cupboard at 49:00. In the previous case he had changed his name so he could get away with stealing the "something important" from Willard's room.
Because of this I was thinking Gorran would be the murderer of Rose because of the bag of keys stretched from Ada's room to his. I wonder if David Gorran would work instead of the Darkhand Steward.
I was thinking it was David too. to be fair, she never tried his name (that we on YT saw at least). so now I'm wondering if David IS Darkhand Steward
A game I recommend that is kinda similar to this game is the return of obra dinn which is also like a murder mystery styled game
