I have a theory for “because you were home” line is that previous movies. The point you made that the town is religious can be a fact because in first movie from year 2008 at the end two kids are shown handing church cards. My theory is that night the whole town gathers at the church and who ever is not in church is a sinner (a criminal in the strangers POV) this explains the meaning of the line because you were home. I would love to know ur thoughts on this theory
