Favorited before watching. The converted Roy Smeck I got to play many years ago is probably the best sounding acoustic I’ve ever had my hands on. Just about leapt out of my hands!
I OWNED A ROY SMECK IN THE 1970s FOR A FEW YEARS I'M SORRY I LET IT GO NOW I BOUGHT ONE 3 YEARS AGO BUT I RETURNED IT QUICKLY I FOUND UNKNOWN HIDDEN FLAWS WITHIN THE GUITAR JEN HAS SMECKMA EYES \\ THESE ARE REALLY COOL // THE SOUND DOES FLY OUT I LOVE THIS INSTRUMENT CARLOS GUITARLOS USA HIGHLAND PARK L.A. 90042
WaRLoKWYATT I'VE ONLY SOLD 6 OR 7 ITEMS SINCE 1960 & I REGRET EVERY LAST ONE OF THEM BUT THEY WENT TO FRIENDS I'VE GIVEN AWAY SO MANY GUITARS & AMPLIFIERS & MICS & ACCESSORIES OVER THE LAST 58 YEARS BUT IT ALL WENT TO FRIENDS OR PEOPLE THAT NEEDED IT CARLOS GUITARLOS USA HIGHLAND PARK L.A. 90042
I owned this guitar for many years. It served me well and enjoyed playing it. It has a sticker of some music store in Iowa on the headstock. Pretty cool guitar. I've got an Andy Sannella Smeck style guitar which is scalloped braced. This one is straight braced but the bridge being placed lower in the middle of the body makes it sound superb.
My problem is that I played a Smeck and now look for it in every J-45 I play, and bar a few banners, they are a completely different beast. I could just kill myself for letting that one get away. Modern J-35 collectors will be as close as I’ll ever get again. Thanks for pulling a true rare classic Mark.
Yeah I love the Gibson's more than the Martins. Gibson's are way easier to play. Scales a little shorter so you get that nice bottom end. Strings are too tight on A Martin.
Freaking awesome episode of FTF. First song was played and sounded the best I think I've heard Mark play it. Interesting and wonderful sounding guitar. Thanks
Hey Mark and Jen , Man that guit. and you had a special bound, you are a great flatTop player but this one had a little extra maybe is the songs or the guit. itself but it is the best performance you ever record so far, such emotion I almost cried. Thanks for all those great songs every night. Love you guys. Long lived GOTD, happy 600 soon i'll be there as usual. André
Holy crap, what a CANNON! Thanks for playing one of my favorite pieces written for guitar, Brent Mason's love letter to his little girl, My Little Ballerina! THANK YOU, MARK! My stubby fingers would not make it halfway across and around that neck! #tickle&bang
Anyone worrying about the nut width/neck profile fret not! If it's like a classical neck then you can do it, just a little getting used to, then you're away. This opens up a whole range of new possibilities more difficult on a standard neck, like easier fingerstlye melodies as well as ALL the stuff you're already playing only with steel strings strings. It's like the best of both worlds except you got the volume (notice how this baby didn't break up when Mark hit the crap out of it?), the looks, and all that friggin vibe.
I have FOUND the name for my band! '300lb Hairy-Ass Gorilla.' My speakers were distorting during the demo - GREAT Gibson! "First we tickle, then we bang" sounds just right.
yes sir , that is one big sound , ka boom , don't know what that first song was but it was very pretty and very well tickled , the second song really brought the boom tho , well produced Jen
Definitely one of my favorite acoustics in all of GOTD. From the finish to the pick guard to the sound hole and the headstock, it's so cool. Jen the production level of the videos continues to improve. Not that it was bad before! Great job. I think the next upgrade should be a second camera during playing, maybe on a tripod from a little further back. I dunno, just a thought.
Roy Smeck, as I understand it, was the first person to get a signature model guitar. It's a beautiful guitar. But I wish you could have got a clean one! ;)
Mark , dude you totally rock...... and that Roy Smeck guitar is a beast !!!!!!! Very few guitars move me but when they do its awesome !!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks man !!!!!!! 😎 ⚡ 🌠 🍻 🍻 🍻 🍻 🍻 🍻 🍻 🍻 🍻 🍻 🍻 🍻
Wow that is one good sounding guitar. I don't mind the 2 inch nut width but would hold me back on this one is that thick baseball bat neck. But one one of the best acoustics in terms of sound
That is one Smeck of a guitar. Sounds real pretty!! I'm should someone might have beating me to that pun. I'd love to add that to my collection. But sadly I'm too poor.. Maybe work out a time share???
For me I'm more impressed with somebody that's good on an acoustic guitar. Personally I don't spend enough time working on that. You can't really fake being a good acoustic guitar player. But we all know on the electric guitar you can get away with murder. LOL
Hey OCD! When i was 14 i learned guitar on my dads pre ww2 j45. And now its mine, Dad said he couldn't wait till he past, because if he did he wouldn't get to the enjoy to see the happiest man in the world, I received it yesterday afternoon, i was so damn happy
Mark says that the inmates (read: himself, Mike Lemmo, Jen, and everyone else but Norm) are running the Asylum while Norm's at a guitar show. Does anyone think that Norm will retire, and buy Alcatrazz prison after that? I don't know if that will happen myself, but now for the setlist for #FlatTopFriday: 1. Brent Mason-Little Ballerina (thanks to Gus Dupree) 2. Red Hot Chili Peppers-Breaking the Girl Have a good weekend everybody, and hope Norm has some kick-ass guitars for many GOTD's to come!
Hi Mark ..I am working on Something Fine Jackson Browne and saw you're using he same guitar.. Excellent sound and tickle..what strings do you use? grtz from Amsterdam
My great-grandfather had a cheapo Oahu Hawaiian slide guitar from the late 1930s. Now, he's passed and the guitar is fucked up to the point that it'd take $400 to even make it playable at all. It's amazing how higher quality woods and better craftsmanship can make a guitar last for decades. As they say: better ingredients, better pizza, Papa John's. Edit: DE LUXE. My great-grandpa's geet had 'De Luxe' in the name as well. If Mark lived in the 30's he'd be drowning in so many De Luxes
ThingsAreLookingUp Strangely enough, G.E SMITH was the guitarist for Hall and Oates and Bob Dylan's touring guitarist in the nineties as well and the connection is made , now we just got to trace back to Kevin Bacon
Favorited before watching. The converted Roy Smeck I got to play many years ago is probably the best sounding acoustic I’ve ever had my hands on. Just about leapt out of my hands!

GuitarlosCarlos Isn't it kind of a prerequisite to be a real guitar player, to have guitars you've let go of or lost and be bummed about it? Haha

Holy (I just shat myself) the tone is absolutely amazing. Wow that is a full fledged diamond in the rough tone. Incredible
Mark , I think you found YOUR Guitar. Oh those Smecks can deliver. That was killer!
Simply beautiful first song..... Thanks Mark, Jan
That thing roars-- love it! Quite a distinctive voice from this one.
1. My Little Ballerina - Brent Mason
2. Breaking The Girl - RHCP
One of the best sounding acoustics ever made. Love listening to Jackson Browne play his.
Yes! I'd love to get a Gibson Jackson Browne model, it's based on the Smeck
Yeah I love the Gibson's more than the Martins. Gibson's are way easier to play. Scales a little shorter so you get that nice bottom end. Strings are too tight on A Martin.
@@williamkaylor1191My dream guitar !
I've been watching GotD for over a year, but this is the first time I was able to watch you and learn a song! Thanks Mark!
Flattop Friday is the BEST!!
That’s a beauty, Them elder Gibson have the ROCK sound and Class Reminds of my 35 Gibson
Tickle song "My little ballerina" Brent Mason. Bang song "Breaking the girl" Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Great playing. Could listen all day.
that thing sounds Fantastic!
Great sound! Great playing. Thanks really needed the first song. They should really make this again.
Freaking awesome episode of FTF. First song was played and sounded the best I think I've heard Mark play it. Interesting and wonderful sounding guitar. Thanks
What a tone monster, especially fingerpicked. Nice playing, Mark!
Seriously I love the sound of this guitar......
Big neck....Big tone. This guitar has it. Sounds wonderful.
The vibrations of the De Luxe tickles deez nuts!
First song is "Little Ballerina" by Brent Mason.
Jackson Browne swears by these, and in this setting, and with Mark's choice for the fingerstyle song, I can see why. Sweet like honey tone.
Love the sound of this guitar!
Hey Mark and Jen , Man that guit. and you had a special bound, you are a great flatTop player but this one had a little extra maybe is the songs or the guit. itself but it is the best performance you ever record so far, such emotion I almost cried. SWEET SWEET TONE!
I want to work for Norm's Damnit! I would never want to leave that job.
Awesome! Thought that was some nick drake there at first on the opening tune. Was still awesome
Great tone!!!
As always, great video and wonderful playing.
Yep, that thing booms!
WOW...wonderful sound
Wow.. just WOW... 'nuff said
Tickle and bang the De-Luxe. Nice sound. See you tomorrow thanks Mark ✌️ Thanks Jen 💜
Man, that thing sounds awesome! FTF once again, well done 👍

Thomas Nettleton I see a t-shirt in the future with that catch phrase.
Hell yeah
I think he said 3000lb. Sounds better don’t ya think? Good luck with your band.
That was awesome playing Mark is good as any top guitar player
He has amazing range, did you see the one where he played left handed ?
No but I would like to
I concur, very good guitarist.
What I meant was a left handed guitar, anyway ruclips.net/video/x9KYA8qPW1Y/видео.html
Check out Gregory Koch at Wildwood Guitars, dude can seriously throw down!
Love this De Luxe! Great tickle and bang too! However! Gotta do a Maton!
yes sir , that is one big sound , ka boom , don't know what that first song was but it was very pretty and very well tickled , the second song really brought the boom tho , well produced Jen
Smeckin’ Hell! Sounds great.
Thank you !! that was beauty !!

Great filming on the “bang test” Jen😀
Roy Smeck, as I understand it, was the first person to get a signature model guitar. It's a beautiful guitar. But I wish you could have got a clean one! ;)
PS De Luxe is French. So correct. ;)
Roy Smeck. What a guy!
That sounds so incredible
Roy smeck was the man a highly underated player
Joke of the day #17 did you hear about the 2 guys who stole a calendar?
They both got six months
Bob Morris ....hahaha, good one!
Each
Wow....loudest cannon I've heard on flattop Friday...😱🤯🤤
That there was some De Luxe tickling and banging.
4:16 BOOM 💣
Cool sounding guitar.
Unbelievable Monster Toneage
"First, we tickle, then we bang" should be a t-shirt!
First we tickle. Now, we bang!
There’s your new t shirt, Mark!
I can dig it.
Mark is an incredible tickler, I love Fridays! How do you remember all those chords? Awesome! 🤘😎🎸
Wow!! Another Gibson acoustic!!
Sweet little guitar!
Matt Rogers and? Just kidding, you've been on em like stink on shit ,haha
gus dupree At least it's about guitars, not Frank Stallone or those starved for attention.
Mark , dude you totally rock...... and that Roy Smeck guitar is a beast !!!!!!! Very few guitars move me but when they do its awesome !!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks man !!!!!!! 😎 ⚡ 🌠 🍻 🍻 🍻 🍻 🍻 🍻 🍻 🍻 🍻 🍻 🍻 🍻
If it’s a Smeck Neck, you know it’s gotta be good.
Roy Smeck- "The Wizard of the Strings". 1900-1994
BOOM!!! Great guitar. My cheap brother in law Kurt didn't photo bomb this session because he thinks "Slope Shouldered Dreadnought" refers to him.
Tone all day - very nice
Tickle & Bang, that’s a t-shirt I’d buy!
Wow that is one good sounding guitar. I don't mind the 2 inch nut width but would hold me back on this one is that thick baseball bat neck. But one one of the best acoustics in terms of sound
it sounds massive!!!
That is one Smeck of a guitar. Sounds real pretty!!
I'm should someone might have beating me to that pun.
I'd love to add that to my collection. But sadly I'm too poor..
Maybe work out a time share???
Flat top, whole Lotta De-Lux Bottom! (The guitar sounds really deep, too.)
Sounds wonderful! But doesn't sound like a Gibson, probably why I like it so much.
Wow!!
You're a good acoustic guitar player.
Guitar ocd ....he is, isn't he.
Guitar ocd ,im 37 by the way...
Yeah everytime I get the acoustic itch I always go for the J 45. You got a special one.
Sounds like my aunts 47 . Club neck and beautiful to play and listen to.
Wow Mark! A drop-dead job on that first tune! It's familiar, but I can't place it- can some other listeners enlighten us?
Get IT
Cool guitar!
WOW!
Wow, until he starts Bashing on a refined miracle instrument like Trump jacking off to a Sears catalogue...so painful and nauseating to watch.

DE LIGHTFUL!
I would love to hear "Don't Follow" by Alice in Chains on that thing. Or anything off Jar of Flies, really.
Hello all hope you have a good weekend

Just Googled Roy Smeck. What a guy! They said he had a lousy voice so he made up all sorts of “trick” ways of playing.
He no say who Roy Smeck. Wiza da strings, brah. 🍍
Sounded the best when you banged it ! ;-)
First song sounds super familiar. Anyone? Loved it - sounds Kottke-esque.
romanhed
I think it's Brent Mason my little ballerina.
Tyler - that’s it. Cheers!
I recall Bob Dylan using this same model when he was with Duran Duran during the 80's.
Green Sombrero youre thinking of when he played with Hall n Oats
ThingsAreLookingUp Strangely enough, G.E SMITH was the guitarist for Hall and Oates and Bob Dylan's touring guitarist in the nineties as well and the connection is made , now we just got to trace back to Kevin Bacon
gus dupree haha
"They started to play with the size of tbe sound hole" , my kind of people
