Amelia Hi how did you get a job.
I have been so unfortunate with the NHS. I worked bank at Whittinghton hospital in 2004. I so heart broken about not being able to get a job in the nhs. 3 years of clinical placements yet my applications are ignored. I am so heart broken dear. Great job you do with those patients.
Great video, fantastic work Amelia
Aw, she seems nice. I'm looking into possibly becoming a health care assistant eventually.
Hi,
Thank you for contacting Health Careers.
It's fantastic to hear you may be considering a career as a healthcare assistant within the NHS. Healthcare assistants (HCAs), sometimes known as auxiliary nurses, work within hospital or community settings under the guidance of a registered healthcare professional - usually a nurse or midwife. The role can be quite varied depending upon the area in which the person is employed.
HCAs play a key role in routine nursing care. For example, you might take and record temperatures and blood pressures; help patients with washing, feeding, and toileting; make beds, and assist people who have problems walking. One of the most important tasks is spending time with patients: talking to them, helping them to deal with any concerns, and reassuring them. With further training, HCAs can take on extra responsibilities such as taking blood samples and removing catheters.
There are no specific qualifications required to work in these roles at a more junior level and the roles and entry requirements can vary for each post. We recommend that you visit the NHS Jobs website, where you can search for job and apprenticeship vacancies with NHS employers across England and Wales, and apply online. By looking at the job description for each vacancy, you can find out what the jobs duties and responsibilities are; and by reading the person specification, you can view the exact requirements for the vacancy, in terms of education, skills, and experience. Please find the website here: www.jobs.nhs.uk
Working as an HCA is rewarding in itself, and you will usually work towards the Care Certificate, developed by Skills for Care, Skills for Health and Health Education England.
If you wish to develop your career further, by applying for more senior positions, then you may be supported to work towards a level 3 QCF qualification. This level may meet the minimum entry requirements for nurse training at a university, although you should always check with each university to clarify what their entry requirements are.
Alternatively, with experience as an HCA, you could apply for vacancies as an assistant practitioner or trainee nursing associate and may be supported to work towards a relevant foundation degree (such as in healthcare practice or nursing associate studies) on a part time basis. Successful completion of this could enable you to enter the final year of a pre-registration programme in nursing or another clinical career, but again, you should check with each university.

Am very much interested in becoming a healthcare assistant and work with NHS,but am not in the UK
Thank you for getting in touch with us Joseph, it’s great to hear that you’re interested in becoming a healthcare support worker in the NHS.
At Health Careers we provide information on the entry and training routes to careers in health and are not directly involved with any recruitment procedures. Furthermore, we are limited in the information we can provide in terms of visas, permits, career guidance, and translating qualifications.
Under the new points-based system operated by the UK Government you would need to meet the following criteria to have your visa sponsored to work as a healthcare support worker:
- have a job offer at the required skill level from a Home Office licensed sponsor (such as an NHS Trust)
- speak English to the required standard
The job you are offered must also have a salary of at least £20,480 per year. So you’ll need to secure:
- an Agenda for Change Band 2 or 3 job with an outer or inner London High Cost Area Supplement added or
- a Band 3 job with fringe London High Cost Area Supplement added.
Band 2 or 3 jobs in other areas of the country are unlikely to meet the salary threshold and therefore it would not be possible for you to be sponsored for your visa.
You can find out more about the Agenda for Change pay scales on the NHS Employers’ website www.nhsemployers.org/topics-networks/pay-pensions-and-reward/nhs-terms-and-conditions-service-agenda-change
We’ve included some useful links here to all the gov.uk website information you’ll need. It’s important to read it carefully before you apply:
www.gov.uk/skilled-worker-visa
www.gov.uk/government/publications/skilled-worker-visa-shortage-occupations
www.gov.uk/skilled-worker-visa/knowledge-of-english
www.gov.uk/what-different-qualification-levels-mean
For clarification on what your overseas qualification is equivalent to in the UK, you can contact a service called NARIC: www.ecctis.co.uk/naric
Anyone applying for a role either directly in the NHS or in an organisation that provides NHS services will be asked to demonstrate the values of the NHS Constitution and how they think they would apply in their everyday work. So it’s a good idea to familiarise yourself with them: www.healthcareers.nhs.uk/working-health/working-nhs/nhs-constitution

What is the qualification to be a health care assistant?
Hello Basil,
Thank you for leaving us a message, it is great to see you are enquiring about the requirements to become a healthcare assistant.
There are no set qualifications to become a health care assistant however, you may find employers will want you to have a good standard of English and Maths for example through a GCSE or equivalent. In some cases you may find employers will ask for a healthcare qualification for example a BTEC or NVQ.
Additionally, some employers may expect you to have some experience in healthcare or care work through either paid or voluntary positions.
Apprenticeships are sometimes available for these roles. Hi Basil,
Thank you for your reply. Each employer within the NHS will set their own requirements on what qualifications they would like from a candidate.
Jobs within the NHS are applied for through NHS jobs so you will be able to search for positions on their website. Each advertisement will include a person specification that you can download to see exactly what the employer is looking for from a candidate (this should tell you what qualifications they will accept). There will also be a point of contact listed for any further queries on the specific job role and they may be able to provide you with more information on if they would accept your qualification.
