I have studied most of the time by books. I think what most effectively works is to open a book read a section try to understand, grab a pen and paper and try to write what the book wants to tell you. don't cram things, if you go too fast and be like 'this is obvious' that's not gonna work. try to make some short notes while reading. In the end, try the problems. but some bad things about self-study is it takes more time than lectures to go through topics and most the student can not focus for long to self-study with books .
