My major credit card does not charge me a foreign exchange conversion charge and the charge is at the official rate of exchange at the time of the transaction. Also I get back 3 percent of the charge when I pay the bill which I do at the end of the month. I do not carry a credit card balance.

it depends very much on the issuing bank of your card and if the card is Debit or Credit. some also cap your spending per day to under 10.000, or they might simple block your card. out here if you dont have a card to a local thai bank.. cash is king.

Great advice, agree. Bolt is essential outside of bkk. You can avoid the vast majority of upsets stomach by eating a plant-based vegetarian lifestyle and where possible avoiding animal foods and dairy. Thai meat and seafood can often be undercooked and it is asking for trouble eating it regularly.

Thanks Trevor for some great advice and an excellent video. I have been a traveller to Thailand for a number of years. The ATM fee's are quite high. It used to be THB 180 but now THB 220. As for the exchange rate they give you a choice to go with your bank or their bank. Sometimes it's better to stick with the rate offered and other times it's good to go with your own bank. For travelling to different countries I would suggest getting a Multi Currency Card. I use a Wise (formally Transferwise) Multi currency card which is excellent but there are other such cards on the market. With this type of card you can take advantage of the fluctuating currency rates and save in the currency you want long before you travel. As for the Thai food I love it and spicier the better. The Thai street food is excellent. Never had an upset stomach eating street food🤞I hope to be there end of August. Looking forward to visiting your bar. Have a great day take care and stay safe.

About cash: I have done it all and my experience is that CASH is number 1. And never ever exchange back home (the difference between exchanging in Denmark and in Thailand is up to 5% (usually around 3%) - which means you pay up to extra 250 baht for every 5K baht you exchange! Visa card from Denmark is more or less waste of money: Fee paid in Thailand when you take out money, fee paid to danish bank and on top of that the exchange rate is not much better than what you can get on the ground. Only thing to consider is how much cash do you feel safe in bringing? For me there is a limit on what to bring with, which I bring and then I just use the creditcard for the rest.

Hi Trevor. I have two accounts for travel. One with Monzo and one with Chase. No charge for using a debit card outside the U.K. My tip is never accept the conversion rate especially at the ATM. In Phuket in March I withdrew 4000 baht and it cost £173. The local conversion would have cost an extra £20. Always pay in local currency.

Currently, Master Card debit card with HSBC is the best ATM card I found. That is no transaction fees (depends on your bank account level) and will credit your foreign exchange account directly. Agreed with that stay away with credit card and ATM card, however, a spare debit card may help in case the trip is extended or need long term stay (avoid carry to much cash).

  • @Andy-4342
    @Andy-4342 2 года назад +3

My bank doesn't charge foreign transaction fees and will reimburse the other bank's fees up to 4 per month for the ATM. Certain credit cards geared towards travel also don't have foreign transaction fees. As far as advice, bring cold pills and anti-diarrhea pills from home and take a half dose for the first few days until you get settled in to the country. Bring swimsuits for little Elvis from home too, as you never know the quality, size, or price of what you will find in country, and always suit up before you go in the pool. Always. Cheers and looking forward to being there in approximately 90 days! :)

I have a couple of tips for newbees...money is always the best option...if you drop any baht do not step on it in any way. Simply pick it up. Stepping on Thai baht will get you in a load of trouble. Also do not fold Thai baht money, try to keep it flat without folding. Buy a wallet that keeps money flat without folding and I also use a fanny pack to keep more valuable items like larger Thai baht notes and a copy of your passport.
If anyone has any updated information about atm/ credit cards that would be helpful and which ones are the best to use.

220 bht flat rate for foreign debit cards at ATM machines. Most only up to 20000 to 30000 baht. 220 baht no matter the amount. So always get the max you can.

Hi Buzzin: another informative video. Your segment on motor cycle taxi's and the use of Bolt is bang on. I am finishing a 6 week stay in Pattaya and I can say, Bolt has been the top contributor to my enjoyment here. For 100 Baht and less I have full range of travel in Pattaya and Jomtien. No restriction on packages or golf clubs, the vehicles are air conditioned. The longest wait I experienced was 4 min. I have full disdain of motor cycle taxi's for the reasons you mentioned. Thanks again and I hope to catch up on my next trip.

I have come to Thailand about 20 times the past 2 years. I have yet to be scammed on my credit card. The BEST rate you can get is withdrawing from the ATM and selecting the bank conversion NOT the ATM conversion. Your bank will give you the current rate at the time of the transaction. I use my credit card for restaurants and such. I never had any issues with credit. Also use it for Grab and Bolt.

You need New and clean large denominations bills. They will reject older and dirty bills. Try the creamy and salty Sum Yun Gai...555 On a serious note, I remember when I first got to Pattay and went walking around to various bars, you will definitely find at least one that will attract your attention in each bar. You will take a mental note and go to another bar. Soon you have visited 5 or 6 bars and begin to get tired of looking for that one stunner, the jewel in the rough. When this happens, you just might settle with, ahhh she'll do. I'm too f king tired to go back. In another words, if she's sweet, look good and seems to like you back...just go with it. there's always tomorrow night.

  • @andrewmack2161
    @andrewmack2161 2 года назад +4

Number one thing you need to travel to Thailand is patience. Not always easy to have when you've been travelling for 24 hours with little sleep, but really necessary.
If you're bringing cash then make sure they're big denomination, new, untorn and unmarked notes. They won't accept notes with marks on them, whether it's ink (pen or stamp), water stains or whatever. Similarly they won't take any torn notes (occasionally they may except a few with tiny tears but not always).
It's annoying returning home with money you would have liked to have spent there but were unable to (especially if you then had to get money on a card and pay extra commission).
Thai food is cheap. It can be fabulous and it can be awful, but it's cheap enough to try is all.
Generally I love it but I have tried a few tings like a bowl of spicy garden cuttings (the stuff you'd put on a compost heap). I'm not keen on Thai Desserts though...
You can buy Charcoal tablets (and other options) cheaply in 711 and imodium in most pharmacies.
If you go into "Lotus" or one of the other larger supermarket chains (even their smaller branches) and 6 large 1.5 or 2 litre bottles of water is often under 50 Baht.
The Thai police regularly set-up "Stings" where they will offer tourists drugs and then arrest them. Some are official operations and some are unofficial ways of building the pensions funds of a group of officers (and can end up draining you of serious money).
    I agree about planning.
Do research but don't make many firm plans. One thing my UK mates often overlook in tropical climates (whether it's Thailand, India or elsewhere) is how hot the temps can be. There are often days where it's too hot to do anything other than relax locally.
Similarly, if you've been to Thailand before, I'd recommend seeing more than just Pattaya.
If you're there for a while, take a few days break somewhere else for a few days.
Thailand is not only Pattaya .

My best tip is to do what Trev, myself and many many other guys did when we first came out here. Join a forum and meet up with experienced members who will show you the ropes and advise on where and where not to hang out. It will save you a lot of wasted time and money, plus, if you are travelling alone, you will meet some great drinking buddies (and some not so great. I was unfortunate enough to have Dennis Leahy from Dublin and Thomas McAuley from Belfast as drinking buddies, google those names along with Pattaya if you want to know how bad things can turn here!🥺)
Be prepared for around 20% of all the farrangs you meet to be ex SAS or Green Beret and have a Bugatti back in their home country🙄😁
Great place, just be smart and don't be an A hole. Bring plenty of money and smile at the girls and you will be fine👍🏻😉

What to pack and not to pack to Thailand is a good topic. Its all depends on how long is your holiday in Thailand. My last trip was 45 days and I did not pack any soap, shampoo and ect. You can always buy them just about at any 7-11 stores and there are many store that do stock them and they are not expensive as you think. I have the Thai do my wash and less worry to also. Just do not bring any winter clothes. I am from an cold climate and I only bring one sweat shirt when I go back home where I can freeze my butt off again.

In my initial visits to SEA had dates that were usually (but not always) cast in stone for additional travel within SEA. Other than that, as a wise boss at work told me, "Don't cast your plans in stone, cast them in Jello (jelly for non USAers), subject to immediate melt down and recasting.".
Being flexible in a different culture, being ready to change plans, and being open to new things is key to enjoying travel within SEA.
Walk down a street and a store or bar catches your eye - take the time to check it out.
See some food that looks interesting - try it out, you can always throw it away if you don't like it but you may fall in love with it.
See a girl that looks interesting - take time to check her out as a possible companion, which is how I met my Thai wife 20 happy years ago.

Cash is king - certainly but Carrie’s risk of losing your wallet etc. Pre-Covid I was a 3. -4 times a year visitor and I always used my saving account. I take 10,000 baht a time so I can’t lose too much snd it lasts a few days. I pay a fee of $4.00 I think and some exchange fee of about the same so $10 a time but I only withdraw 3-4 times so it’s not too bad for piece of mind
I have always gotten a very good rate - same or better than the booths. No issue there
There are cheaper bank card options you can research but I’m not that tight to save 30-40 dollars

If coming on holiday I would recommend to just avoid street food for the most part. The ingredients used are typically the lowest quality (especially the meat), not hygienic, and it's not healthy. It yummy because it's laden with salt, oil, and sugar. Just not worth the risk on holiday. That doesn't mean you can't eat Thai food, just pick your places that look clean and have a good flow of customers. The cost difference is nada or minimal if you pick the right places.

ATM's charge 220 baht per transaction. An ATM card may have additional charges for using at a different ATM than the bank that provided it.
I use Schwab card - all fees refunded at end of month - good exchange rate.
I've found the maximum withdrawal to be either 20,000 or 30,000 baht depending on ATM owner for single transaction. Maximum per day is probably dependent on ATM card max.
I pay cash for most every day expenses, credit card for hotels (no exchange rate fee).
I don't believe it is easy for tourists to get a Thai bank account, even if they come there regularly.
BOLT gave me a lot more freedom to travel around Pattaya. In the past, if a place was far from the bahtbus route, I didn't go unless it was with someone who had transportation. Many taxis use BOLT too and I found them to be near where I wanted to be picked up, if not actually right in front of me.
Even if one likes spice, look for those large pieces of peppers in the dish - I would avoid them.
