  • „...The basic idea of the movie, that would fit onto the infamous matchbook, immediately got me excited. The idea was born when I came across Boaring Postcards by Martin Parr as I was meandering through bookstores. An animated title sequence based on old GDR postcards. The concept turned out to be very helpful because it made it possible to introduce the story at the original GDR sites before the wall came down. The postcards were collected at Berlin flea markets. They reflected the atmosphere around Alexanderplatz during the era prior to 1989 in Berlin. This region had undergone significant changes by the time the film was shot. Parts of the postcard motifs disappear, leaving room for new motifs to appear from behind. For me it is the search for the true image behind the illusion of the idealized official version

My father lived and studied in Dresden between 1975-1980 and watching this makes me think about him a lot.
He always said people spread lies about the eastern Germany, that it wasn’t really bad. They were just people traumatized by nazis and wanted to stand from ruins together

I was listening to this music while walking through the streets of Berlin thinking of all the horrible things that this city saw in the last 100 years, it gave me chills and almost ended up crying, people were looking at me like: you alright? Crazy feeling

I once watched this movie on a train going from Amsterdam to Berlin, and it was crazy to think that just a couple of years ago the place I was travelling through was a country behind the Iron Curtain. It feels as if the movie's story and Germany's recent history were revolving right around you.

Grazie

It really does give the sense of the GDR as another world, totally separate from ours. The feel of the photographs, the omnipresence of the political iconography and the scenes depicted are all incredibly alien. It makes us feel like we’re children looking at the GDR when watching it
