  • Episode 375 : Season 12 : Sailing Australia
    Hello Friends,
    On this episode we depart Port Stephens in storms to continue our push North to Queensland. The passages from New South Wales to Queensland were some of the most brutal I have experienced, and not because of weather or big seas, but because of the East Australian Current that runs down the coast from Brisbane, making progress very slow and grueling. We averaged 3.5 knots in 24 Horus on some of the legs of this passage, with full motor on and sails up. Clawing our way up the coast was agonizing.
    This video is just a collection of the "highlights" as I dont film day after day of motoring up the coast, because it's simply not that interesting.

Reminded me though of the time we lost our engine power and had to come into the marina under sail, drop the sails, do a Uturn to slow the boat, jump off and use the ropes to pull her in and slow her more for a side slip we thankfully found. Then walk our way around to our own slip with enough help. 😂😂😂😅😅😅

    The NSW coast north of Port Stephens doesn’t have a lot of protection but if you are willing to cross a few bars there are some great spots to hang out like Camden Haven and the Clarence River which is a cruising destination in its own right. The bars usually aren’t much of a problem if you are sensible about timing. That being said you need to treat them with respect.

I sailed from Moreton Bay to Sydney about 10yrs ago and went from Moreton Bay to Southport via the Waterways, it was interesting. I recall having to anchor midway (my boat's draft about 5'6") and wait a couple of hours for the tide to come up to be able to get through.

    Well done on the docking Rhonda. I've always found it really useful to work out where the pivot point of the boat is, when maneuvering under power. If you've got that in the back of your mind, it's always easier. Keep up the good work, you’ve made a great start, with practice you might get better than James.

    • @SailorJames
      @SailorJames  3 месяца назад

      Considering she had never driven in close quarters there is no way she could have really known the pivot point of the boat, that only comes with doing it over and over

    • @danielhicks7141
      @danielhicks7141 3 месяца назад

      @SailorJames yep fair enough. When training people on the big scow up the river at Warkworth, I tell them where the pivot point is so they've got some idea, but we are dealing with 50 tons and 80ft of boat. It's great to see you giving her a go, the more she can do, the safer it is for both of you.

      Thank you.. haha have you ever tried reversing a full keeled boat? They are a nightmare…. And seem to have a mind of their own when asked to back up…. 😅 not something I’d ever want to try in a confined space, unless it was empty and completely covered in a soft buffer to protect the boat… could be a fun challenge.

    • @SailorJames
      @SailorJames  3 месяца назад +1

      Current doesn’t matter, it could be dead calm an no one on this planet could back Triteia up in straight line, 7 years with this boat and trust me, never gonna happen.
      The motor thing sucked but she is running good now.

    Hi James, can you explain why none of the vessel position reporting apps, report an AIS position for Triteia?

    • @SailorJames
      @SailorJames  3 месяца назад +1

      Because we don’t have an AIS transponder

    • @IGod-yl9pt
      @IGod-yl9pt 3 месяца назад

      Thanks for your update. Given your plans to sail to South East Asia, please be aware that Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, (and I believe Indonesia too), each have a mandatory requirement for ALL foreign vessels to be equipped with an AIS transponder and thereafter display a valid MMSI registration. Sorry but it's their rules so you will need an AIS "transponder".
